I think I'd like this game. Seems to be a bit more strategy than luck based and well space battles like this is what I live for.

+Jonas Hemmingsson It's a good, strategic system, and there aren't really any similar to it. X-Wing is much more about single-pilot fighters dogfighting and combo'ing abilities, and Armada is a small taskforce of ships with a similar playstyle. In my totally biased opinion, Halo is a lot of fun. :P

+David Hollis We could do a tutorial for painting the ships. I used an airbrush on my Covenant, though, and I'm not sure how you'd replicate the look with hand brushing.

David Hollis Awesome, alrighty then. The colours for the purple on the Covenant are Naggaroth Night by GW, then Xereus Purple by GW, Army Painter's Alien Purple, then finally Genestealer Purple by GW. Thinned down 'Ardcoat for a glossy finish. The blue glow is all Army Painter. Deep Blue to start, then Crystal Blue, Ice Blue, and a 50/50 Ice Blue/White mix for the focal points of the glow. :) The CAS is different though. Base coat of black, silver metallic for the body, drybrush alien purple for the middle areas. Glows are as above. I personally used a mirror paint I had lying around for it, but that stuff's expensive so I wouldn't recommend it.

+cannonfodder343 Haha, yeah my poor CAS gets a real bloody nose whenever it finds itself facing off against a Punic. Those SMACs are absurd.

+Avensis Astari It was the only weapon to ever consistently win battles against the Covenant. It is a bit underpowered in Fleet Battles compared to normal MACs, simply because normal MACs can fire super fast/every turn like the SMAC orbital defence platforms.

To clarify, normal MACs have a recharge time of a few minutes, as opposed to SMACs which recharge in 6 seconds. I heavily disagree with the game allowing MACs to fire every turn.

I know, I've read all the novels. HFB is an abstracted system, and weapons which could only fire every half hour or so would be incredibly dull. :)

The game MUST condense time periods to remain playable (and each turn often represents the collective firing of longer periods and are not one-to-one with real-like play time). What, do you expect games to last twelve hours just so players can wait fifteen minutes between every shot?

any tips for painting the assault carrier? you got it to look perfect and i am a complete beginner at painting :')

Hey Gary, the CAS is actually a fairly simple paintjob. I'll run through the basics of it: 1) Good base coat of black primer to start with, 2) Paint all the metallic areas you want shiny silver with a decent metallic. I recommend Army Painter's Shining Silver. It's cheap, covers well, and is nice and bright, 3) Take your time doing thin coats with it to build it up without clogging all those fine lines on the CAS model. It'll be worth it in the end, 4) Get a blue wash, and gently add it to the lines and other recessed detail, making sure it doesn't pool or spill. You'll need a fine brush for this, 5) Find a colour of your choice for the lumpy bits in the middle of the CAS, then drybrush it on. This will catch the top of this area, especially the edges, but leave the deeper areas in shadow, 6) Finally, the glowy areas will need a series of blue paints, (or any other colour you want,) getting lighter as you go. Start by drybrushing the darker colour over a fairly wide area, then go lighter and smaller as you go through the stages. This will give you a rough glow effect. I'd not recommend Games Workshop metallics, as they tend to be a bit watery and have very large metallic flakes. The glow effect will likely look quite rough, as airbrushes are pretty much made for that kind of effect and can do it very smoothly. Most of all though, take your time with it and it'll look good regardless of how you do it. :)

hey thanks for the reply, I have finished painting it now and am pretty happy with the result :) was just wondering if i should spray a sealer on it? not really sure as i have heard it protects the models but just wanted to seek some advice first :)

GaryTheSalmon In general it's a good idea to use a Matt or Satin varnish to seal the paint on. Prevents it from wearing off in the future. :)

Have you ever thought about making a flood fleet? That's ones thing I wanna do, get an extra set of Covenant, paint them to resemble flood infested ships, and change up the cards some to match.

I hate flood, one of the things i loved about Halo Reach its the total absence of flood. I know its part of the Lore but they are nothing more than a "generic" space Zombies like Statcraft zergs or warhammers 40k Tyranids. I wish halo was only about Covenant vs Unsc and nothing more.

This is the first Halo Fleet Battle I've ever gotten to see and it taught me a lot about how the game works. It was also a lot of fun to watch so thank you for that as well. I just wish I could find a group near me to play it with then I could justify actually saving money to buy the game.

+MobilizedPanda Hey Panda, we use the Army Painter one. Nice and cheap, but shows up beautifully. Looks like it's just a barcode scanner laser, actually.

I basecoated it in Citadel Chaos Black Spray, then applied some Mirror Paint for the metallics. You could substitute a suitably-shiny metallic instead. From there, a very thin wash of Drakenhof Nightshade in the recesses to accentuate them. After that, a drybrush of increasingly-bright purples for the structures running along the spine of the craft, those little boxes and other greeble. I then used a succession of Army Painter blues and white in increasingly-bright shades airbrushed on to do the glows. :)

I would so watch a 6 hour game of this on a 50 by 50 meter (Basketball court maybe?) on a massive black clothe with 2 teams of 12-24 people to take charge each of their fleets into a combine super allied fleet of like 500 ships all together on opposing sides. Just make it hectic! xD

Haha, that would take a little longer than six hours my friend! As much as it'd be fun to film that, it would take three times the length of the video to film, as a rule, and we don't have a space to set it up in. Plus the vast majority of the game would be moving with no shooting due to the short range of the weapons compared to the size of the battlefield.

Look at that Punic sitting pretty with nothing on its Damage Tracks. The Captain of that Supercarrier must be so smug. With Lord Hood and Cortana still supervising, you think cleaning up the rest of the Covies is possible? My option would be having Cortana constantly pin the -2 Firepower Rating on the ORS and then funneling all of the Punic's forward firepower on the rear section in one go. With a Vulnerable token from the Midsection's destruction and another Vulnerable from the twin Super MACs, it'd be a good chance to knock on at least a Damage Marker or two before the CAS can accelerate and get the Punic within the aft arc of its remaining weapons. Catch both approaching pincers of the Covenant in as nasty a double-sided Broadside as possible, then turn 45 degrees towards whichever one took less damage while trusting in the Punic's raw durability and Hood's repair ability to mitigate potential damage and Aft Attack crits. Probably turn 45 degrees clockwise towards the ORS because I'd be willing to bet money that some firing solutions of the Fore, Mid and Aft missile batteries plus the Mini-MACs on the Port side would take a nasty toll on the Corvette Battle Group in just one turn. Put two weapons each on two Corvette elements, and if it kills as expected, the remaining two elements would be all but useless trying to plink away at the Punic's rear. And then the last couple turns would be spent educating the ORS that it's not the biggest fish in the HFB Ocean anymore :)

+dagdamor1 I don't doubt that Shaun could have cleaned me off the table, given that I barely dented the Punic. That said, I've learned a few tricks since this game for putting it in its place, so we'll see if it gets to run amok in the next BatRep. ;)

Huh I dont think that the result would have destroyed the mid section- wasnt there still a Zealot on board? It states in the rules that assault specialists cancel each other out, so it would have only been +2 instead of +4 and the mid section would have survived with a vulnerable.

Was the ORS ever really that good? In my games it was always too slow to make effective use of its beam weapon, and the UNSC would prioritize shooting it out of the sky with MACs long before it could really do much.

+DarkKokiri86 It's a miniatures game, so they come unassembled and unpainted. Spartan's license specifically states that they're not allowed to make "collectibles," so they can't compete in that market anyway. :)

+triangles are 2spooky4me Yup, Spartan _did_ make a Long Night of Solace model, but it ended up being 58" long which is waaaay too big for a tabletop game! It'd be darn cool for recreating a similar scenario, but with the firepower the LNoS had, it's not realistic that anything would survive getting close to it. :/

The Infinity is 1/6th the length of the Long Night of Solace, and would get curbstomped by it, sadly. Spartan made a model for it, but they gave it joke rules and never played with it because you simply couldn't balance that in a game.

Many games tend to use as many dice as possible. The more dice you're rolling, the less skewing you get in statistics for the outcome. :)

Can you invest in a decent camera? Please? It hurts my eyes to watch this on fullscreen, especially when the focus is off. I love watching these games, so it would just make it easier and better for everyone

Maybe one day. Right now we create content for this channel in our spare time so spending hundreds of pounds on a camera is not feasible. The lighting where the halo bat reps are filmed is not as good as our usual spots either and I think that makes a bigger difference

You don't have to. The covenant ships come in purple plastic and the unsc come in grey. They look nicer painted of course but it's completely optional

It's an Army Painter model, so I'd check your local Army Painter suppliers, or see if your local store can get it in. It's really handy for a lot of games tbh.
