GOATED gaming moment. The Halo 3 run is the perfect culmination of everything Halo was building up to. The fact that I have the option to just skip to it in the main menu made it all the more sweeter if I was short on time. FINISH THE FIGHT!
I think you have a really good takeaway in this video. I wish you got a chance to experience Halo in it's prime. A good video that explains what Halo was like as a fan during the 2000s is KBash's video titled "Crying about the Halo trilogy". Basically it has a lot of the same takes as your video, but from the perspective of someone who was there, which shows that you really enjoyed these games and you likely would have been in the same boat as the fans who were sore to see it fall from grace after Bungie left. There is a lot of division between Halo fans now because a lot of what is present in Bungie's games has either been retconned, or game features haven been forsaken. The best way to describe Halo is that it wasn't just a game for most of us, but a place to go. Chris Ray Gun said that and it's very true. Halo used to actually have something for every type of player. Halo 3 had a population of one million at launch which meant there were one million people playing campaign, online matchmaking, custom games, LAN parties, esports competitions, making forge maps, playing around in theater, taking screenshots, hunting achievements, earning armors, collecting skulls, doing time and scoring challenges, VidMaster challenges for Recon, making/watching machinema, broswing the Bungie.net forums, reading the books. The list just goes on and on. We don't have that level of accessibility and variety in modern Halo games anymore, even though Infinite is free to play. Halo 3 never got a genuine sequel because no game after it (Reach was more of a goodbye and a spin-off with different mechanics and a sanbox tailored to Invasion), and I don't think 343 could handle making one and Microsoft doesn't care to put money behind it. Halo didn't lose momentum like other game series did because it got stale. It lost momentum because the idea behind broadening the audience under 343 was to distance themselves from what made this series great in the first place. I wish I could experience the Bungie Halo games for the first time all over again because I remember just how much those games provided for me growing up.
i'd never even thought about the whole accesibility thing, youre absolutely right, i think one of the big things i chose not to cover was mulitplayer, but that was also a huge factor in Halo's success. its so cool to hear from people and this comment made my day. I will definitely be checking out KBash's video.
@@Treeb0i it’s a really good watch. Really all the little things added up. Some people like me would sometimes not even boot up multiplayer or the campaign. We’d listen and watch the menus or just sit and listen to the ambiance of multiplayer levels. There’s so much in these games.
Halo was somewhat a game of its time. It was one of the better FPS games to come out at that time but I think what made it grow in popularity is the time it came out and that it was on the Xbox. The Xbox was trying hard to get into the market and it was covered and talked about a lot. And Halo was its top game near the start of the xbox so it was often in many conversation at that time. Another aspect of it was that this was before streaming video and downloading games so the main way to check the game out was to rent it, go to a friends house or buy it. Most people where not going to buy or rent a Xbox to just try one game. So they went to a friends house, and this is where I think what made Halo take off was that it was basically the best co-op fps at that time. My early Halo memories was not just of the game but also the people who I played it with. I would say what helped halo past 1 and 2 is that it became the kind of a game where many people knew how to play. So when you had people over they knew Halo, so you gravitated towards it.
There comes a point where a franchise has been part of your life for so long, you take for granted what made it special enough to engage with in the first place. So it's relieving to hear from a newcomer that its inherent worth is still real. Halo matters. It mattered in the early 2000s, it matters now in the 2020s, and I hope we can still appreciate it in the decades to come.
HERESY HAS STAYED YOUR FEET TREEBOI... I cannot recommend playing ODST enough, if you like seeing halo from another perspective, and getting some sweet, sweet lore.
I was just watching a bunch of rants over the modern 343 Halo games until the YT algorithm served me this and hey, great video man! As an old-time Halo fan I’m glad you genuinely had a fun time with it! Yeah pedestalizing things only ends up putting up barriers and I feel like Halo is precisely the sort of game that prizes just unadulterated moment-to-moment fun. :)
Honestly couldn't agree more about the feelings of not experiencing halo during it's glory days. A lot of what make's halo's fanbase is the legacy of being there and it reaaaally hits the feeling of missing out. At least, the games are wonderful and enjoyable to play still.
Something that was big to me was that Halo PC was the first online FPS game I ever played and Halo 2 on Xbox Live was the first online FPS most of my friends played. That really had a big impact at the time, though not really interesting today as most FPS games have online now.
This was nice. This video was a nice time. I love these games, they are my childhood. Even though I played these games as a kid, I still relate to feeling left out of the hype. I never went to a LAN party, I never went to a local opening (I went to Halo 5, there were literally only five people and a really pretty moon halo in the sky, like God himself was apologizing for the unspeakable disappointment I was about to experience), and I never had any friends who were into Halo enough to couch co-op with me... so I very much feel that doodle you did of the Halo experience pie chart with the chunk missing. I've always been a campaign boi and the guy who plays online and occasionally does a squat dance with my random teammates whose names I'll never know. Even so, these games are tattooed onto my very soul.

Warning: long comment lol As someone that played this game when it started when I was still in 2nd grade and beyond, I'm glad there's still people that never tried it, that are giving it a chance. During the time of their releases, each of Bungee's Halo games were a story that everyone was waiting in anticipation for, like the MCU, Star Wars, or another popular movie/tv series. On top of that, with each release, the games brought something that would be considered innovative to how games would then be made, following them. To me, as much as I love the stories they told, it wasn't the only thing that us fans remember the games for, the multiplayer and community game modes and support is what helped inspire great experiences and hype for each game. Sadly the community aspect of the franchise seems to be a fraction and a shadow of what it once was (thanks 343i). Despite all that, I'm glad you made this video. It brought a smile to me to see not just a new comer, but someone that had an outside perspective of what it was like growing up along side with halo, despite never playing it. Finishing this up, I'd like to ask that you give other games a try too. Yes you could say that "Playing one FPS would be like playing all of them", but that's not necessarily true. It would be like eating an apple, and deciding to not try out an orange and a melon, because they're all fruits. So please, explore the other games that you missed out on too! I just found your channel, and I look forward to see your future videos! ;D

You should definitely read the books too. They vastly increase the scope of the halo universe and also have some interesting moments like John (MC) and Thel (Arbiter) eating barbeque and Thel put coleslaw on his bbq. Not even joking. The Halo legends and waypoint animations are very good as well.
Halo: Bad Blood but I've never read it. It takes place at the end of halo 5. I heard about second hand from one of my favorite halo lore channels called HiddenXperia. Idk about the coleslaw thing tho he might have been joking.

i dont think reach was meant to be the starter point for newcomers to the halo series. Sure 343 released the games on pc in chronological order, but the developers werent making the game for new people to experience halo for the first time, bungie was in fact getting ready to move on from halo. they made reach as the final love letter to the original fans. dont ask me where to start if you actually are a newcomer, as i have literally no clue lol. nice vid bro, made me laugh and it was just good in general
Checked the likes and sub count after the video and was shocked, the video was made REALLY well. You really hit the nail on the head with Halo and it’s reputation and how when you actually play it, it’s just a great game, not some nostalgic trip. Fantastic vid again though glad you enjoyed the games as much as I have for all my life. For sure play ODST(music goes hard) and maybe halo wars. Personally Halo 4/5 are so disconnected from what makes halo great that they’re very underwhelming. Eventually get around to infinite too, recently played the campaign and despite its problems it felt like halo.
I'll be honest, I expected to go into this video and get triggered. But we both had VERY similar experiences but about 7 years apart (Halo 5 came out 8 years ago..... damnit im fucking old lol) As another person who started with reach I can 100% say its NOT the best game to start with. But its honestly surprising how many people have played Halo only recently and have the same love for it that the older fans do (Me personally i'm sandwiched in the middle, starting on my uncles Xbox 360 around 2016 in the Halo 5 era) ultimately I love this series and miss it, I also never really got to experience the hay-day of Halo or even COD but playing all those games in the modern era is such a breath of fresh air (I recently played my first COD games with the og modern warfare trilogy and I can see why its so beloved) also if you loved the music, atmosphere, and characters of the games (as it seems you did) then ODST IS A MUST as it does all three of those EXCEPTIONALLY well (gameplay too but thats to be expected as its almost identical to Halo 3)

I love these games and I've played them way too much. However some of these critiques are super valid. Two Betrayals and The Library blow. And I'm not too keen on the stand on a moving platform sequences in Halo 2. And Halo Reach should not be the first game for new players, yet it was for many since it was the first one they ported to PC with the collection. All of that said I really liked your input, and would really dig it if you could get around to some of the other games sometime. I love ODST, and your nostalgia free perspective would be great for Halo 4 and 5.

So you said you hated ‘Two Betrayals’ - but then you cut to the mission, ‘343 guilty spark’ which is a mission that happens before ‘Two Betrayals’. It seems you didn’t like the mission ‘Assault on the Control Room’ which is a very solid mission. There’s ways to skip the vast majority of it so you can beat it in like 20 minutes or less. 🤷♂️

You've gotta try the games in their original form. If possible of course, because 343 did make some changes to the game because Halo 1/2 were originally a Gearbox port. Shitty ports. @@John.T. That's all I was saying. Bungie's Halo will always be great. I kinda liked how 343 tried to take a deeper dive into Chief and Cortana's characters in 4 but everything else has been a jumbled mess. Infinite was better than guardians but it's still too little too late.

Your essay is so well put together and hilarious, I’m shocked that you don’t have more subscribers. Halo has been such an integral part of my childhood, i cannot imagine a world without it. Even though my entry to the series was in Halo 2, it has cemented itself as one of my favorite game series of all time. Halo 3 was what got me to change my mind from getting a Wii for Christmas to a 360. I have so many memories of playing and bonding with my family through it. Even though the series has tapered off in quality over the years (the most painful of which being Halo Infinite despite me playing the absolute fuckton of it for the past couple months), I’ll always remember and cherish the impact it had on me as a kid and as an adult today. Reach was the first to come out on MCC PC. Looking back though, I agree it probably would have been better to wait until CE came out to start there, but also I was incredibly excited to get Treeboi into Halo ASAP

I always knew that, but it always came with a tinge of doubt; a fear that it's just some second-hand nostalgia that was keeping me hooked on Halo. I wasn't allowed to play Halo until around 2013 when I was 8 but I still missed out on a lot of that nostalgia you talk about towards the end of the video. Still a huge fan though but it does suck knowing I'll never experience the golden age of Halo. If you are looking for good reviews of the Halo games besides Infinite, Halo Wars, and Halo Wars 2 check out Raycevick's series "Halo ... Years Later" if you already haven't. Really in depth videos that try and stay bias free and actually criticize the games in good ways.
I agree, but with a caveat. Two betrayals is one of the best levels in Halo. It is intended to be hard (boardering on unfair), a grand spectacle where you are caught in the middle of a four way fight completely alone. It is a set piece extablishing the status quo for the rest of the game. The Covenant used to fear you but they fear the Flood more. There is everything in this level (except friendlies), and is good but to be honest, probably the level which has least stood up to the test of time, especially in the remastered graphics.

I think as a kid I was lucky because I got to experience major evolutions in the industry as they were happening. Halo was one of those turning point games that really just blew you away with how far ahead of its time it was. I’d argue that most of the bungie games hold up today in terms of raw gameplay. The dynamics of the sandbox and the diversity/quality of the enemy ai all with their own distinct personalities really made the game feel interactive and immersive in a way I don’t think any shooter has been able to match today.
currently doing a playthrough with a frined who has never play any of the halo games, we're in halo ce tho but it's interesting listening the impressions and criticism of someone whitout the nostalgia, because pretty much there are only old players and we talk about the game the same way for years, so we are kind blinded ngl haha, nice vid 👏
It's always nice to see when people play Halo who may have been against it or indifferent to it come out of it and say how much they enjoyed it. I introduced 3 of my friends to play the series, and all 3 of them are fans of it now. One of them was someone who actively hated Halo during it's prime, and I'll never forget that after he finished CE, he called me on Discord and said "Damn, that was really fun".
This is the exact experience I see from Muslim converts. They start by watching and reacting to Islamic videos, and before they know it, they are excited about Islam and emotionally invested in it. as they watch more video, tape beautiful in love with a religion., eventually become Muslims themselves. It’s just like watching a new person play halo on twitch, ensuring the experience and by the end of it, they become they have been Halo fans all their life.
