Tom Smith Technically they didn't. First contact was a random transport ship that got attacked by some Jackals. The one and only crewman didn't survive. But if you're talking about Harvest in general, the only reason they survived was because of a AI sacrificing herself and some crazy human planning that just barely worked.

Yes we had SPARTANS, but they can only do so much and be in so many places at a time.

Cypher160 True. lasting little under thirty years in a war for the right to live is impressive, especially with such a large technology gap between the two factions. Covenant's main advantage was though space combat, numbers, and technology. UNSC's main advantage was they had no other option. extinction was unacceptable so they took any route they could to win the war. Spartan III's are a prime example of this. True they were sent on massively suicidal missions but they were a prime example of what happens when you push humanity to the edge. the II's were beyond legendary, but there were too few to be where they were all needed. Main advantage humanity had was we were not going to give up, not going to surrender, ready to fight to the last man standing. Halo: Reach was a huge example of this. Noble six knew he was never going to get off world again when he chose to stay behind, but he did not stop and let the enemy kill him. He fought to his last breath, taking as many Covenant with him as possible. I think in his mind, he knew that every Covenant soldier he takes out there, is one less humanity had to face when he was gone. I agree, quite impressive to have lasted that long. Though to be fair, humanity was kind of spread out over hundreds of different worlds and with the Cole protocol, that helped out massively.

Cypher160 True, very true. Even with defeat, we took out a good chunk of them with us. Probably would have taken the Covenant a little while to recover even without most of the Elites, hunters, and i think Engineers separating from their alliance. Humanity would give them a sour, if not a Pyrrhic victory. Let's not even think of how far in debt the Covenant would be in after funding that large and long of a war. Not to mention how many families they'd have to compensate for how many lives were lost (Grunts and Engineers not counting because i think they are both basically slaves in the Covenant hierarchy system).

I was thinking: imagine another sci-fi universe in which the main human government is simultaneously at war with rebel human governments, multiple extra terrestrial factions who want humanity eradicated, super space zombies /wrath of god in zombie form, and at war with artificial intelligences and machines. It's like being at war with necromorphs from Dead Space, Skynet from the Terminator series, the Dominion from Star Trek, and dozens of nuclear armed human terrorist groups from any game or movie franchise all at once.

Lord Oceanus Yeah well no. Though earth is still pretty militaristic it is nothing compared to what the planet would look like if Hitler (for exemple) had won.

The UNSC was fairly militaristic, but it would have made zero difference and arguable could have stifled the development of important technology neccessary to fight the covenant. Not that Hitler winning the war would mean Nazi rule 500 years in the future, but ultimately it didn't matter how competent or numerous the UNSC were on the ground, once Naval Forces and Orbital Defences were destroyed, the Covenant could glass the planet at their leisure. In fact often the Covenant would only invade the planet for fun or simply for the "Honour" of killing as many humans as they could in the flesh. I think the quote from the Elite Shipmaster in Halo: The Return summed it up best. "It didn't matter how hard they fought, it didn't matter at all, our power and belief were unstoppable."

+Lewis Carlin There is no evidence to suggest militarism stifles technological progress, in fact there is evidence that suggests the opposite given the numerous, and significant technological developments Post WW1, during WW2 and during the Cold War by the highly militaristic major powers. A more militaristic UNSC pre Covenant war would have likely sought to advance naval technology further than cannon UNSC, as cannon UNSC has a very conventional, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' approach to technology. Evidenced by gas operated fire arms still being in standard use. I think it's a big mistake to assume it would make no difference.

If i am correct, the Spartan's had small thrusters in the back of the upper chest. That allowed them to drop from high altitudes and use the thrusters to soften the impact just before landing as you see their bodies hunch down but don't crumble to the ground.

Agreed, considering that the 4 MACs on the Infinity are supposed to be equivalent to an orbital defense platform Super MAC I would say that the Infinity is more than capable of taking on a handful of CAS class or even CSO class ships. A Super Mac is supposed to be able to pierce multiple covenant ships when their shields are low, obliterating them when their shields absorb the full force of the MAC round. So if the Infinity can close to a range where it can use its MACs, it will dominate a ship on ship battle

the infinity is the pinacle of the human weapons, its literally the best we got to fight the covenant, the infinity might be smaller than other covenant ships but has the most advaced tecnology, its suposed to take down the best covenant ships (maybe the infinity could save reach but its something we will never know)

Considering the Infinity would have to go against a whole fleet with mostly likely at least one supercarrier and hundreds of other ships, I think it's safe to bet the Infinity wouldn't have been able to save Reach.

Public Enemy Number One True, but humanity wouldn't give up easily either way. when faced with extinction, we fight back with everything we got and we don't hold back. Though i'm sure the Infinity would of given humanity a major edge in battle if the war lasted a little longer, maybe even be enough to take the fight to them on one of their planets, with a little fleet support of course.

Firepower and troops maybe, but the infinity is armed with super MAC's like the ODP's use which can tear through a covenant cruiser if they are within range. As for troops the Infinity has the IV's, while i personally think they are not as good as the II's, they can still kick ass pretty decently. Few well placed shots with the MAC's will disable a the shields while the rest of the fleet. will be a tough battle, but the infinity might win given the right strategy and if the IV's, that will more then likely infiltrate the super carrier, do their job, and if the Master Chief is with them.

Well technically we've never seen a supercarrier in action, aside from it obliterating the Grafton which is a lot smaller then the infinity. We can only guess on it's capabilities, unless halo 5 has the infinity go up against a super carrier, we'll never know who would win. But i'll still bet my money on humanity, we have that unpredictable factor when faced with death.

Diamond King78 Only really because of internal politics in the Covenant. The failed purge of the Sangheli and thier subsequent alliance with the remaining UNSC forces turned the tide of the war. In one fell swoop the Covenant lost its battle hardened officer corps and nearly all of its battle tacticians, along with that they lost most if their advanced warships as the Brutes were given only the worst of what the Elites were forced into handing over by the Prophets. When the Elites were turned on the survivors took with them the best warships and this was a major boost to the UNSC at a time where the Covenant was at its weakest due to sustained losses to the war and now an internal conflict. The Shipmaster summed this all up when he noted that even outnumbered 3 to 1 against brute ships it was an even fight.

Diamond King78 There are nine species in the mainline Covenant (as well as the unknown number of species in the Covenant Fringe). The only reason humanity won the war was because of the Forerunners and their Halo Array. If humanity didn't stumble across Alpha Halo, Thel wouldn't have became the Arbiter. Then, when they came across Delta Halo, the Gravemind brought Chief and Thel together. Thel was able to take down Tartarus (with the help of Johnson) and lead his species to help humanity in the last MONTH of the war (not counting the extra four months of "war" after the war already ended). It's honestly amazing how the war lasted 27 years, with humanity losing almost every single battle in that time, until the time of the Halo games in the last five months of the war (Reach: July/August, CE: September, 2: October, 3: November), in which luck saved them at the last possible second.

It was said in The Fall of Reach that the first contact humans made with the covenant was when they lost contact to one of their colonies called Harvest and received a radio signal with one of the prophets basically saying something along the lines of 'Your destruction is the will of the gods(or forerunners) and we are their instrument"

There's actually a book known as "Contact Harvest". Johnson is the main character as Humanity meets the Covenant for the first time. Spoilers below. . . . . Note, its been years since I've read this so some of this might be off. At first there is violence as both don't know each other, shit happens, jackal pirates etc. Then Brutes arrive and diplomacy is attempted, its as good as it sounds. A higher up in the Covenant learns of humanity and how humanity would unravel the entire Covenant due to humanity being reclaimers. A coup of sort happens, and the 3 Prophets take power, the ones we know and kill. Back to Harvest. Covenant technology reviews humanity/human planet of Harvest as being related to forerunners. Brutes want the planet and indicate this to humans. Brutes being the fine diplomats that they are express this in such a way that fighting starts very easily. The prophets declare humanity a race that cannot exist and declare holy war on them. Many of the Covenant question this as the idea of the Covenant was to accept all races into their religion and the Covenant, but they follow orders anyways. War begins, Johnson escapes, book ends.

Brett Truax No Ensemble Studios existed as a subsidiary of Microsoft and they went under in 2009 after Halo Wars release in 2008. They do not exist anymore. Several projects were cancelled because of that, including a Halo MMO

Yes, I'm Russian. In Russia not many people know what Halo is. I really like the game. I really want the Xbox one, I don't want to buy just for this, really want on the PC. the only thing I do not like is that the imbalance between humans and Covenant. They win.

alex kep Although, the current humanity in the Halo franchise, is already more advanced than the Covenant in terms of technology, (Except FTL, which we have no idea about.) and the only thing stopping them from making an entire fleet of Infinities is the lack of population and the fact that most of the planets they took their resources from were glassed.
