Since the CFL or LED bulb sits higher than the rim of the reflector, I make a lamp shade to cover it.
I used a Mylar inkjet photo quality paper to make the shade from. For Circline CFL or normal Edison type LEDs, 1/3 of the width of a sheet of paper works well to cover the bulb. The Mylar sheet is stiffer and heavier than normal paper so it holds its shape and stays put in the lamp very well. I have a couple of lamps that have been working like this for many years and the shade looks like new.
This lamp I used a CFL bulb, I'll show a couple of LED bulb options in the next video:
- • Halogen Torchiere Lamp...
And if you don't like the look of the shade, you can always go for a more recessed light. here's an example:
- • Convert Halogen Torchi...
That one is nice, but more money, time and energy consumption.
Another option would be one of those 10W, 20W or 50W square LED modules and a power supply or you could install a ring of surface mount LEDs around the rim of the reflector and put a driver in the middle. I like the simplicity of a single screw-in bulb that will be easy to change out in the future.
