On these vintage formulas you see they intreig me because in the 70s ect they were the fragrances that I smelled from everyone. They take me back to happy times when I was young and carefree and watching adults all dressed up to go into town or a party or special occasion they were exicited and happy leaving a cloud and train of pungent fragrance 😀

The older version lingered much longer and permeated your clothing. Yes, it was much stronger. Personally, I miss it terribly and wish they had left it as it was, but you are right in that there certainly is a sadness to it...as if it has gently faded with time along with our sweet memories of Halston himself.

Unintentionally, I purchased Aromatics Elixir, Cabochard, and Halston (all vintage formulations) all around the same time, unaware that Bernard Chant was the nose behind all three. And you are totally right, they all share the same dna. Now I am thinking of layering them together in different variations.

thank you for this comprehensive review 😍 I actually own the original 70s Halston pure perfume and I can tell you that it doesn’t smell of marigolds at all. Actually most of floral notes just evaporated with time. So it doesn’t really matter whether one owns an EA reformulation or the original version, we can all just speculate how this fragrance really smelled in the 70s

Interesting how perfumes affect people differently. As you're describing Halston as being sad I agree the clubbing cocaine disco promiscuous crowd lived that but this was an extremely small segment of society. I was a child in the 70's & our moms wore these heavy chypres so for me wearing Halston now evokes memories of neighborhoods full of children playing outside, carefree sunshine, moms & dad's grouping in driveways having cookouts & smoking cigarettes. Joy & freedom.
@SuperDacob
@SuperDacob 3 года назад
Our childhood memories are connected to fragrances in a particular way: as children, we purely perceive fragrance as connected to mostly parents wearing them and we connect emotions to smell as the fragrances are worn by people that protect us: our parents and relatives. Kids don't get influenced by perfume advertisements. They perceive them and are influenced by them in a more innocent way. In this video, however, I do not delve into childhood memories or smell memories connected to childhood. I try to analyze this perfume from the perspective of the makers of the fragrance and what their creative intentions were as well as how they wore the fragrance they created. I approach it as a sort of perfume historian. I touch base on the fact that fragrances have memories too. Thats what I mean when I say that "tall trees cast long shadows". I analyze this fragrance as if it had a conscience of its own. You are analyzing it from your own memory. You begin from yourself (and mind you, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that). For the sake of this review, I however detach the fragrance from myself and analyze the bigger picture, the historic, socio-political context and so on. So when I say that it smells in a certain way, this does not necessarily mean that it smells that way to me due to my memories but that it smells in a certain way as an intention or an idea. xoxo
@ruthannemackinnon588
@ruthannemackinnon588 3 года назад
@@SuperDacob agree 100% all perspectives being equal. As a child I actually had a mini bottle of Halston & wore it. All those heavy 70's chypres were mingled in the air with pervasive cigarette smoke which you touched on. I enjoyed hearing the historic part of your review & the comparison to the perfumers other chypres

I bought a bottle of Halston recently and am really enjoying it. I have Always loved Halston's clothing- the one shouldered dresses- the sexy 70's dresses: Gorgeous! They are still wonderful to wear today because they feel less structured and sort of modern.

I did try the layering. I only have the perfume/parfum version of Halston, so had to dab it (first). Shocked to discover the Halston rose to the top. Ten minutes in, it basically smelled like Halston! A little greener, little drier- but Halston parfum. Completely wearable. (For me, as I love Chant chypres.)

The original Halston was dark and sexy and could only be purchased at department stores. It was not a drugstore fragrance. Unfortunately, no one will ever experience the original. Vintage fragrances that remain (that I’ve purchased) have deteriorated too much. The Elizabeth Arden versions are horrible.

Dacob the vibe of the 70s era of partying, giving, we could find some of that reminiscent in the way we with 20s lived in the 90s. It was very giving, very pure and yes, also very dirty. Wild theory here, as a vintage lover - leave your pitchforks at home: I am in my late 20's, I have smelled vintage formulations of perfumes that are still in production today ... Unless the notes were completely removed (whether they were natural and/or synthetic)... Watering them down, so to speak, isn't always a bad thing. I have smelled vintage poison, I have smelled vintage obsession. As a perfume lover, I absolutely adored them. That being said, I smelled the reformulations and ... Besides them being toned down (and maybe some of the notes smelling just a little bit different).... They maintain their allure, and their scent isn't that much changed. And that is not a bad thing. I only ever wear vintage stuff (as in old school, not necessarily the vintage formulation), but I am well aware some people don't like them. So... I would rather have the watered down version that doesn't bother people as much, but still makes ME feel good and confident .. than spray the vintage formula and make everyone uncomfortable around me. Because, yes, I am a perfumista. I appreciate perfume, I educated myself about perfume. But I don't always want to impose my passion on others, whether they like it or not. And, besides... I don't appreciate the elitism of the perfume community when it comes to vintage formulations. Like you're committing a crime that you couldn't afford the old stuff and settled for a bottle of perfume produced today. One, because not everyone can afford it and we all have our priorities in life (so the whole "save up and just buy the old stuff" really annoys me), and two .. because I would rather introduce someone to an old school perfume, that is still in production today... And have them love and buy it... So it can still live on, so it can still be sold, and not forgotten. My biggest compliment getter is the modern formulation of Poison. I did not expect it at all... But there you have it. Biggest compliment getter. Personally with poison (because I have a teeny tiny vintage bottle of it)... I never understood the "it's nuclear it's strong" argument. It is, indeed, potent... But my nose has never sensed anything repulsive or screechy in poison. The modern formulation to me is just a tad bit more airy, but still pretty potent so .. I do recommend it, unless one can afford the vintage. Or if you don't want to overpower everyone around you. As for perfumes that I consider "offensive" - and by that I mean that I love them but would never apply before going out.... Bal a Versailles is one of them (I love civet), and Aramis (yes, I am a woman but I wear men's cologne whenever I feel like it). Aramis is not actually a case of "not leaving the house wearing this" but more like "I need to spray this 20 minutes before walking out the door", because the leathery note + musk in it registers very civet-y to me, and I know there are people who absolutely hate this note because it registers like urine to their nose. As for the current formulation of halston? Rich, well-rounded, full bodied, gorgeous. But don't overapply. Because for a cologne it's pretty potent. So... If you feel like it fades too quickly, just take the bottle with you and reapply. But don't go for overspraying all at once. Unless you want to murder someone.

In the seventies Halston was so expensive and out of reach for ordinary people. All they had was to look at it advertised in magazines. Perhaps that's why it became such a success later in the 20s, people now can afford it and now remember to get themselves some.😀

The bottle reminds me of a bottle of Chianti, not a Phallic symbol at all. :-D Most Enjoyable sypnopsis of this Fragrance Dacob!. :-) I didn't like Ewan McGregor in this role, the over-acting was a bit cringy...I had seen the Halston Documentary, and had enjoyed it immensely, I loved his personality and creative process, his look and that gentle speaking voice, didnt get that at all from the Netflix show. It was a bit like watching "The Crown", and thinking that that was anything but fictious, though based on factual people, living and dead. Ryan Murphy productions are often larger than life, and characters are often more like "carictatures" in my opinion. I do enjoy them though for the pure entertainment generally. I thought the support cast were great, though the script was a big lack lustre. I did love Vera Farmiga's character patiently coaxing the Scent memories that Halston inhabited.. The pkt of cigarettes with the smell of sweetness, the dried orchids, and the jock strap moment.... xx
@SuperDacob
@SuperDacob 3 года назад
I agree with you Patrice. The show was highly manneristic like all and most things Murphy does. Ewan was not the best choice for the part although he is always sweet on the eye. LOL! But also my problem is that the way they told Ewan to act or the way he decided to tone Halston, made him come across as very annoying and not at all sympathetic. Maybe this has to do with the fact that a straight man was told to portray gay affectations and just did not know how to do them justice. Ewan forces the voice so much to sound like an affectation of Halston's voice that most of his other acting is not seen. The voice becomes too redundant and an accessory which most times hinders the flow of the character. Instead, it makes the character freeze in a sort of loop of Ewan trying to nail the voice over and over and over again. It never felt natural is what I guess I am trying to say... Although... Liza's character was perfect!
@smithpatricemary
@smithpatricemary 3 года назад
@@SuperDacob Yes!! you nailed it there Dacob! :-D I also thought Liza was fabulous, and the best supporting role in the show. :-D I think also Ewan seemed a tad old for the part of late 60's and 70's Halston, and that black hair/ or bad wig did him no favours :-/ His voice sounded loud and ludicrous with that awful affectation/ overdone cultivated accent. I don't think that this particular straight guy ( cuteness aside lol) was good in this gay role, particuarly a role as iconic as Halston. Though apparently the writer ( or director), thought him perfect for it.. though I think either Cheyenne Jackson or Matt Bomer would have been fabulous playing Halston. Great subject and could talk about it for ages, as the show felt so polarising to me! Xoxo

I bought this perfume cause I freaking love Aromatics Elixir (and chypre in general), so I wanted another creation of the genius Bernard Chant. The day after this perfume was in my hand, “Halston” went out on Netflix and this completely blew my mind! And the design of the bottle? Love it.

While it is true that glass is not a true solid, it is also not a liquid. And even though it is flows, it does so way too slowly and too little to account for the "melting windows" you mentioned. The uneven glass is from the manufacturing process.

When I think of Ewan McGregor, I think of him in the 2003 movie Down With Love with Renee Zellweger, Sarah Paulson, David Hyde Pierce & respectfully Tony Randall. I love 💕 that movie 🎥 based in the 60s with a vibe of classics as Pillow Talk and Lover Come Back. It’s a great movie 🍿 to watch and chill on your self care day.

In addition to my 80s EDP(?), I had a pure perfume flanker called Halston Nights. It was truly beautiful and HUGE. It would not be ignored. 😂 unfortunately every vintage bottle I’ve since purchased was rancid.

This was one of my top favorite perfumes back in the late 80s/early 90s. The current formulation is not even a slim shadow of its former self. 😢

The fragrances today are affordable now because they mostly contain artificial ingredients. Back in the day the resin was purely organic. Real flower essences. This made quality products seriously expensive. Also everything was hand created by human beings.
