Up to closure in 1976, Alston’s was the last remaining branch from the Newcastle and Carlisle route.
Originally built for the traffic from mining of various minerals, as well as for passengers, closure was delayed until the area’s roads could be improved.
This was filmed from the front seats of a (first generation) Diesel Multiple Unit train.
The Alston end of the route is now occupied by the narrow gauge South Tynedale Railway.
Please excuse that odd shape in the sky in much of the footage. One of the problems with Film was “a hair in the gate.” The part of the camera where the lens focused the image onto the film. Keen camera operators used a little brush to try to prevent the problem. Maybe I’d left it at home!
