Not weird at all, never tried it with apple cider vinegar but those of us from the east coast of Canada or The Maritimes it's common to put white vinegar on the cabbage once it's on the plate. Seems like it won't work until you have it and it's awesome. We do it as a big meal in a large pot with a whole bone in ham, preferably a shoulder and also whole onions and rutabaga, otherwise it's the same, it came from the Irish, it's called Boiled Dinner. Also gets made with salt brined pork or beef and occasionally ham steak for a small meal. The broth tastes great and gets ladled over everything on the plate, if the cabbage is boiled separately then that broth gets ladled over everything. One of my all time favourite meals. A favourite thing to do is take leftovers including some of the broth and mix them all together in a frying pan and fry it all up like a hash, we call it Mush, great name eh. Some salt/pepper and ketchup on it, maybe some chow chow on the side and it's a good meal with the leftovers with a bit of different flavour and texture to it than the original meal.
I have always boiled my cabbage dinners but since you say it tastes better steamed I am going to try that. Either way it's a good meal. Thanks for sharing. 🌞 I really enjoy your videos
You're right. Steaming is better than boiling. More flavorful and nutritious. But that pot liquor honey! That's some good sopping with cornbread. I'll take it either way.
I can warm my hands over videos like this. Without question this method retains nutrients. I also save the liquid, if any is left, for soup stock. A beautiful dish, full of flavor and common sense. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing this 'recipe'. I am ready for that to be my tomorrow night's dinner! It looks like it would be a low-cal, high nutrition kind of meal, too.
My lovely Londoner mum would make this when I was growing up, but over here we buy a raw gammon (ham) joint and cook it by gently simmering in water then sometimes finishing in the oven with a glaze for the outside. Very popular here at Christmas. So what we do is cook the gammon then add whatever veggies you want and potatoes in the same pot so everything gets the flavours, like you were saying by steaming with the cooked gammon on top. We also often add a cheesecloth pouch of yellow split peas and herbs to cook in the same liquor to make Pease Pudding to go with it. I love the combo, and its a delicious and nostalgic meal for me but its not alien to my taste buds lol And then it usually follows that you make soup with the leftovers. Tasty, nutritious and pretty budget friendly. I really enjoyed your video. Made the world feel a little warmer and cosier for a short time. Much needed and appreciated. Thank you for sharing :)
