In the last two months or so, we have had almost 30 new ham radio operators licensed. As a result, the questions are constant about how to set up a station. Figuring that many people have the same basic questions, we decided to put together this short video on the very basics of how to set up your first station.

I've had a general class license for about 4 years now, but have only ever used HTs, due to the cost constraints of an HF station. This "tutorial" has definitely convinced me to build a home station finally, within a reasonable budget.

New Hams , Google Grounding Bus for a radio station, you'll be glad you did.

A good point. This video was actually made as part of the upcoming ARRL series. Grounding is covered in a different video. Thanks for watching!

Taking my tech test soon & starting to look at base stations so this is really helpful. Have a handheld for now but I wasn't completely aware I'm going to need a power supply.

Nice video! This weekend the family was gone and I worked on getting my ham shack finally setup! I liked your video, motivating. The Ham Clock you showed, I hadn't seen. Where did you find that? I've seen the Geochrons but that didn't look like the one's I have seen, even with their new Ham Radio layer you can add. Looking forward to more from you, and nice intro too btw - keep up the good work and thanks again!

You don't have that yaesu set up as a base station? That seems so much more comfy to use at a desk, with all the buttons and the big VFO.
@K5ATA
@K5ATA 3 года назад
The yaesu is dead. It is just therefor whe I get round to having it worked on. Lol

Hi: I am still working on my Tech license and no equipment yet. Q: Is it advisable to inquire about "refurbished" ham equipment or is it best to go new? Most helpful presentation. Thanks very much, RD

Nothing wrong with used as long as you have someone you trust check it out.

Did you have an issue with the Astron? Just wondering why you bought two Tripp Lites after having an Astron, they are not that different in price.
@K5ATA
@K5ATA 3 года назад
No. The astron had been running since I got licensed 25+ years ago. I had stations at different places so built up a few more supplies over time

My 11 year old and I are super interested and going to our first club tour today. He wants to be like Dustin fron Stranger Things. I scored a 70% on my 3rd try no studying though I'm in IT. Any suggestions on first radio.

That is going to depend on what you want to do with the radio and what area you live in. For your tech license, I often recommend the Icom ID-5100. It does 2m and 70cm, has a touch screen, 50 watts output, and is great for setting up at home or in a vehicle. In fact, when in a vehicle, it can auto search repeaters based on your GPS location, so it is wonderful for road trips and the like. It also has DStar digital mode, but using that may depend on your area. Thanks for watching, and feel free to reach out if you need any other help.

I’m new to all this and learning from the ground up. I have question. If you have a HF radio and HF antenna can you transmit on uhf/vhf frequencies? Or do you need two different radios and antennas?
@K5ATA
@K5ATA 3 года назад
You would need a different radio/antenna combination. There are some radios that have VHF/UHF/HF but they can cost a bit more. You would still need two antennas however. For example, I have an Icom IC-7100. Great radio. Does HF/VHF/UHF and has two antenna inputs. One for the HF antenna, one for the dual band VHF/UHF. Feel free to email if you have any questions.

@@K5ATA Is the 7100 what you are running in your truck now? i just watched a few days ago the older video where you were trying different mounts for your 5100.
@K5ATA
@K5ATA 3 года назад
I am running the 7100 now. To be honest I am trying to find a nice looking way to mount both, as I really like the 5100 for vhf uhf and the 7100 to give me Hf. Just need to find a clean way to do it

How about some cable management
@K5ATA
@K5ATA 3 года назад
At the time of this video, the HF radio was regularly coming in and out of the station for some POTA. We have since gotten everything on Power Poles and gotten a separate POTA rig, so I was able to manage cables more permanently. Thanks for watching.

I’m more than happy to answer your questions. In terms of “for beginners “ I was referring to newly licensed amateur radio operators. Perhaps should make a video of station ideas to consider before getting a license.

Hi i am najmudheen from india (kerala state)this video created more confusion about starting ham station..Why you not tell devices name.. You only told about frequency.. Cables and bands. And some serial numbers. How can understand which devices you used (eg you can tell "amd a8" so beginners cannot understand "amd a8" is amd processor based laptop) please tell common name of That devices eg:repeater, amplifier...i already subscribed your channel and i hope clear explanation about the devices in next video(device name, purpose)
