Wow... thank you sincerely for such kind words. I really mean it. I appreciate your kindness I try to do the shows every day but sometimes my schedule gets a little bit too full. Usually, the show is live around 20:00 UTC. Today it will be later due to a few appointments I had to get to. Today, Eastern time, probably around 4 PM I’ll be live with the next show. Hope to say hello to you on a live show soon. Thank you so much again for making my day! It’s all about the of of radio. Larry

Timothy, Great transceiver purchase in the FTDX 10. An incredible receiver. Congratulations! I use the MFJ 1700C. That’s the one thing in my sheck I can’t be without. It can switch between six antennas and up to six transceivers as well. I’ve had mine about 16 months now or so and it’s been phenomenally good. No problems just works as it should. You’ll need a little space for it as it’s quite large compared to other switches but remember you’re switching between six different antennas and up to six transceivers here. It’s there to help you “grow your shack.” Thanks for the comment and I hope you enjoy both of your rigs very much! Larry

Just ordered the FTdx10. It just hits all the key points for how I use an HF rig. Currently have the 991, but this 10 looks amazing to me. Now the big dilemma is whether to keep the 991 or not

If you like having 2 m and 70 cm absolutely! That’s a great transceiver for that purpose. But you’re going to fall in love with the 10 I think. Nice purchase. It’s a “baby 101.” All the best, Larry de K7HN

@@HamRadioLiveShow ....yes, really excited to get it. Ive been reading reviews and watching videos for weeks and weeks. The 10 looks like a perfect fit for me. @KE0CPU You know, if I was in your spot I would hold onto the 991a. You’re going to spend close to $460 for the FTM 300 and nearly $600 for the FTM 500 so you can stay on wires X, 2 m and 70 cm. The 991a does it already and you own it. I wouldn’t move that rig at all. I think it’s actually a good all-around Transceiver and gives you the VHF/UHF bands and Wires X. Congratulations on purchasing the FTDX 10. I’m beginning to believe it’s the best transceiver that Yaesu makes. All the best and thanks for writing in! Larry de K7HN

Thanks for this show. It was great to see both used side by side. I’ve only recently got into ham radio this past summer but I keep wanting more radios lol. I’m struggling to pick one of these two even though I’ve already got two HF radios. Is there any reason you need two antenna ports over the one? I’m not a huge contester and I don’t think the 101 can do diversity receive.
@HamRadioLiveShow
@HamRadioLiveShow 3 года назад
Hi Kalery! First of all, congratulations on getting your ham radio license! Man that’s awesome! Which transceivers do you currently have? The FTDX 101 D and MP both have “Diversity Receive” standard. So if you have multiple antennas and you’d like to try and pull in a station that’s fading or weak, you can change to the other antenna on the second VFO. GREAT QUESTION! I have to be honest, I’m a huge fan of having better connectivity on the back. Especially when it comes to an “RX Antenna.“ I have a Welbrook loop that I use for RX from time to time on a rotator. It’s nice to have when it’s really noisy. The FTDX 10 only has one antenna input so keep that in mind my friend. Both transceivers are excellent receivers though. I’ve found side-by-side that they are identical in their performance. If it was me between these two, and I was building a shack with multiple antennas, I would choose the 101. It has great connectivity plus you get diversity receive and that second receiver if you’d like to keep an eye out on 6 m or another band to look for an opening. Definitely go for the mouse control. It’s not covered in the manual… But you’ll need to get a Logitech 310 wireless mouse to make it work. That same mouse also works on the FTDX 10. This is important, if you go into your local Best Buy store to buy a wireless mouse you’re unlikely to find a mouse that’s going to work with this transceiver. So, find a 310 and you’ll be golden. Let me know if you have any other questions and thank you so much for writing in. All the best, Larry de K7HN

I've seen videos showing the vc tune making a huge diff on the ftdx101, I know the ftdx10 don't have the option but have yet to see this kind of result in that rig. I've seen no signal but could hear good quality audio on the receive from the ftdx101 with almost no noise with vc tune activated. What are your thoughts?
@HamRadioLiveShow
@HamRadioLiveShow 2 года назад
Tim, Thank you for writing me. It’s nice to meet you. I think VC Tune, like Icom’s “Digicell “ is fantastic. Do you have a narrow path stand involved, possibly a loud signal coming in on part of it but a week one as well. VC Tune and Digicell help you to squeeze out the loud signal and work on picking up the week one within the pass band. Like the FTDX 5000’s “VRF” it’s an incredibly powerful tool to be able to work a week station close to a strong one. I think it’s one of the biggest DSP functions that’s come out in amateur radio in a long time..Digicell helped me work Holland during CQWW SSB, with a couple of strong signals very near the transmission from Holland. I was able to use it to squeeze them both out and work the Netherlands that literally was at an S zero at my QTH and make the call. It took me 20 minutes, but we made it. VC Tune helped me to work Spain from Oregon again with an S zero signal and some pretty strong QRM that was an S9 coming in from the states. Without VC tune, I couldn’t have made the call. I highly recommend Digicell and VC Tune Tim! If you’re serious about working some tough DX, it will help you. Thanks again, very nice to hear from you! Larry

I rarely use the dnr, cranked up too high and you could lose the conversation so I leave it around 1 to 5...I use the bandwidth-rf gain- notch alot and the contour ....my one complaint so far that I will live with is the display> it has some backlight bleed or glow...the only time you see it is when you first turn on the radio or when the screensaver pops on...otherwise you cant see it during regular use and the display does look good

You are absolutely correct. I’m using a Vertical Antenna here so of course I need to ride mine a little bit. I’m typically about a four on the 101 and about the same on the 10. I end up using the Contour and bandwidth a lot more than anything else. Hey thanks for writing! It was great to hear from you! Larry de K7HN

Hey Larry, Really enjoy your show. Are you going to do a side by side comparison with the 10 and the 7300. I'm trying to decide between the two. I have an Icom 7100 and I'm used to the format and like it. I also have a Yaesu 847 but I just never could warm up to the lay out. I'm definitely not branded since I've had different brands of transceivers and enjoyed using them. I don't contest mainly rag chew and general QSO's and I guess I'm wondering if the price bump in the 10 is actually worth it. I hear the 7300 has a subpart receiver, the 10 has no ability to average the scope, so on so on.. Appreciate your thoughts, Thanks, Tim.
@HamRadioLiveShow
@HamRadioLiveShow 3 года назад
Hello Tim, Yes, I will be doing that comparison. I had an issue come up with my 7300 and it is now being repaired. Once I get it back from service my hope is to do that comparison video. There’s a video that follows this one that I did yesterday that goes over the FTDX 10 DSP in more detail. At the end of that video I ask that question “is it worth the extra $700?“ In my opinion the answer is no. Both transceivers do the same thing. They both have one antenna input (although for arguments sake there is an inrad 7300 that technically could give you an RX input on the 7300 however the radio isn’t designed to do it) both radios are HF only, 100 W, are about the same size and basically do the same thing. They just do it differently. That extra money could buy a really nice antenna and feedline. Or, if you already have both of those it could help buy an amp or another great antenna. Just make sure your feedline is the best you can afford. Feedline is the one thing you’re not going to swap out until it fails. You’ll Probably change out transceivers and Antennas’s but not your feedline. Get the best you can. I think the price of the FTDX 10 is going to end up bottoming out somewhere between $1400 and $1500. Gigaparts had the FTDX 10 the day after Christmas as well as December 27, for $1525. That’s probably a good sign of where things are going pricewise. I would hold out for a while until the price comes down. That’s just my opinion. I’ll be using the Transceiver the next two days and then it goes where I bought it for... down near my zero gravity chair where I can use it in comfort! It’s a perfect little companion for that purpose... and to be quite honest, I find it more fun to use than the 7300. Again, just my opinion my friend. Thanks for writing in. I’m truly honored that the shows are helping you decide which way to go. Both are excellent Transceivers. All the best, Larry de K7HN

@@HamRadioLiveShow Hey Larry, Thanks for the reply. I was thinking the same way as you. My coax is approaching 30 years old and I was going to replace it and the antennas. The extra cash would definitely help with that or an Icom 9700 to go along with the 7300 (some day)🤔. What would you advise for coax for HF and 144/440. Runs for HF should be approx. 75' and 50' for VHF/UHF. Any ideas on antennas, I'm looking into off ctr fed and end fed wire. I already have a Gap Titan DX to put up for HF and a Diamond X700 to replace my old Ringo ARX2B. Any thoughts? What happened to your 7300? Is it something that's problematic with the radio? Sorry for going so long but I appreciate your detailed reply and your willingness to share your knowledge. Keep up the good work. Thanks again, Tim. KR4AZ

@@timsul3092 Hi Jay, thanks for writing in. For coworkers unless you really want to go high-end and run hard line, an LMR 400 variant should work fine. It’s less lawsuit and RG8 U and you can still bend it. Either way, I don’t think your runs are going to be long enough that it’s going to hurt you to use either the RG8 U or LMR 400. But personally, I really like LMR 400. It’s more expensive, less flexible but it has a great dielectric in it and will prove to be very reliable for many years to come if you take good care of it. Antennas, for HF, I don’t think you can do much better price wise and performance wise with the DX Commander All Band Vertical. The components are great and you get a lot of bang for your buck with it. Or, you could go with a Directional bucks cheaper than you think. The MFJ 1848 is a Hex Beam that includes 40 m through six. Add a good rotator like the HyGain CD 45ii to it and you have a directional antenna for under $1500. It’s hard to find any directional antennas at that price. For VHF/UHF, I simply use a diamond 2 m/70 cm Antenna. It works fine for me. Hope that helps, Larry de K7HN

Royce, perhaps you didn’t know this but this is the only live daily ham radio podcast on RU-vid. It’s designed to be like a daily radio show. I realize that’s not for everybody and that’s OK. There are plenty of other RU-vid channels out there. It’s also designed to be interactive with people who are interested in or are in ham radio. What it’s main focus is in helping people to get into ham radio or “license up.” And my friend, their needs are just as important as your needs are. The interaction with people that watch the shows is very important. While you may not find that useful, they and I do. Because many of those people have great comments that are important to the shows. Because people usually come live from at least three continents daily I do acknowledge them. I’m honored to be able to. But the true passion of this channel Royce is to help people get licensed and those with licenses to be able to license up. That’s why most of the shows have test questions included. The show also had a lot of helpful information regarding this transceiver. For example, this video shows which mouse you can use with this transceiver because it’s not even listed in the instructions for it. You can’t just go into your local Best Buy store or Office supply store and buy a mouse that will work with this transceiver. You have to get an “older generation mouse” to make it work. Notice also that you didn’t have to hit a skip ad button one time during watching the show? I don’t monetize this channel and it costs me money by not doing so. I do it to give back to people. Lastly, this is the fourth video I’ve done on the FTDX 10. Having the FTDX 101 MP from launch, I have a lot of experience with Yaesu Hybrids. Maybe there’s a question I can answer for you that wasn’t covered? I’m planning to do only a few more shows with this transceiver because my purpose for purchasing it was to use it in a different location where I can relax. Let me know if there’s something you’d like to know more about. All the best to you and yours, Larry de K7HN All the best, Larry de K7HN
