This is an introduction video to many cool things to come. This will be the first in a playlist all about the new packet radio, NPR-70 v05 Modem by F4HDK. The link to buy the base model, or build your own can be found here:
Build it:

The model in my video can be found here:

We will be doing lots of cool things with this device. First in this video we talk about the general use case and give an introduction. Next we will prep a windows operating system to work as a master and client.
After that we'll start accessing resources over the 70cm amateur radio band via the NPR modem. We will build an amateur radio IP network.

My friend just posted me a link to this video, was excellent, we managed to get 6800 baud on 2m over A 7mile range while everyone else was still using 1200 baud. but we could never get 9600 to work on 70cms, the NPR blows that out of the water and I'm interested to see the outcome of your experiments with it, thankyou 😄

I fell in love with HAM radio when building one of the first. tcp/ip stacks for the Macintosh OS back I. The early 90's when packet radio Had the only freely available working source code. It wasn't until I got my license 2 years ago (FINALLY!!) and found out that packet radio was all but dead and it was being used for idiotically simple stuff like winlink and none of the HAM people I found knew anything about computer networks. I am so happy to see your series!! Thank you!!

you've been able to do that for years.... AX25 has been able to do that for God knows how long... now was it worth screwing around with it? not for web pages but we used it for linking packet nodes and bbs's with things like ROSE and bpq etc worked great. this does seem a better way of doing it, but it's nothing new :D
@ModernHam
@ModernHam Год назад
IP over radio is by no means new, but the things were about to do with it will be due to the speed being about x50 and the ping being about 1/8th without the AX25 overhead.

I hope you get this working in the area at the limited bandwidth of our rules. This is faster than packet I beleave can connect to an arden system. Ps ARDEN runs in the bands without symbol rate limitations so they definately have more speed. Good luck and I will be watching.

So it all stopped when I gave up on packet radio? I was using Linux and a gateway in the 90s. The locals were happy when I turned it all off long ago. I'd like to try this to connect the Raspberry Pi in a vehicle to the laptop/joysticks on the Linux ground station to replace the wifi that replaced the RC gear. How small can it be made?
@Aintyourbuddy_guy

Is it was fast as dial up? I thought of this just out of the blue, because dial up Internet was done through sound over phone lines.. So why can't we use Ham radios or short wave or whatever, to do the same thing? Is that what this is? Is that possible? Star Link is another way too

I'm glad I found your channel. Im a techie and understand tech, but I am not a pro or expert. Your delivery and explanations are extremely clear and concise, which is helping me to understand that I can create a network over ham! KE8KES. Funny note... I had dial-up and still remember the days of dialing in, getting a cup of coffee, and then checking my email just about when my coffee was finished 😂. Im going to be going through your videos and working to get up and running with the digital networking. Thanks!

The first thing that came to my mind is why should someone use this over AREDN ? I did a little research and I believe you could use this when line of site isn't achievable. The hardware is cheaper and more readily available for AREDN and throughput are going to be way better. The symbol rate limitation has to go. Rules that prohibit encryption are also holding us back. I can build encrypted PTP links using unlicensed spectrum all day long. I'm having to worry that something on my OS or using an specific Application on my OS might send something encrypted. The norm is encrypted communication by default now, we don't have the control over every packet that goes through the IP interface. As an example, If you use SMBv3 built in protocol for a file transfer over the ham bands you might get in serious trouble.
@ModernHam

You seem to conflate the idea of military and a standing army. What you refer to the military is in violation of article 1 section 8 which limits funding of a standing army to 2 years. Read the Constitution specifically the second amendment and it clearly states that the malicious necessary if we wish to remain free. Article 1 section 8 also says that it is the duty of the militia no one else to deal with insurrection and to execute the laws of the union. That was article One section 8 paragraph 14.

@@ModernHam about 15 years ago I was doing some experimenting with Doodle Labs OFDM boards on 70cm. I was able to do megabit speeds from over a mile away. There’s an article about it in TAPR. Of course that was a different time and what I was doing was largely frowned upon. If I still have those doodle labs boards I’ll give them to you. I have a foot in two worlds… I enjoy just talking, 1200 baud packet, you know, The old stuff. But I also enjoy experimenting with the new stuff. I find a lot of value I. Both worlds. The issue is that it gets stressful because I don’t 100% fit in with either group which is why I kind of left the hobby. Anyway. I will look for those boards.
