An enjoyable morning working some DX and European contacts on 15 and 20m, plus short skip openings on 40m.
In this configuration, when ‘static mobile’ (portable), the antenna operates just as a manual screwdriver antenna, but with three BIG advantages over antennas which are at the cheaper end of the screwdriver market:
EFFICIENCY - Firstly, it’s much more efficient than say an ATAS on 20 and 40m owing to the 2.7m (9ft) long whip. (Around 3-3.5ft longer than an ATAS).
COST - Secondly, the price.. £85 bought me the coil, 9ft whip and mag mount. This amounts to around $120 US. This is less than 30% the price of an ATAS 120.
ADAPTABILITY - this system can be used with various whip sizes (9ft is probably the maximum recommended length) AND is not dependent on you owning a Yaesu radio to use it (as per the ATAS).
Sure you’ve got to jump out and move the coil to tune.. but once you become familiar with the settings per band it’s a real keeper!
