Hamas - or rather its specific military wing the Al Qassam Brigade - posted a video on Twitter / X yesterday purporting to show the manufacture of .50 caliber sniper rifles in Gaza. I was curious to have a look at it, as I've seen a lot of rifle factories and done some of this sort of work myself, so let's see what the video actually shows when we look carefully...

Wearing latex gloves suggests there is oil involved. But then, around a lathe, avoiding wearing gloves or long sleeves is preferable. Reaching over or anything while it's spinning. . Then again latex gloves rip so easily. It's not a piece of cloth, that will get you sucked in. Interesting.

Been a machinist for a few decades now, its what you don't see as much as you do. Vernier caliper is only accurate to ±.03mm, no bore mics, no gun drills, how are they rifling the barrel? I used to work in a shop making receivevers for Remington 700s. We used modern CNC lathes for the bore and threads but for the OD we used a manual lathe with no coolant. Some smoking and chip pattern like you see here was normal. Of course, that was for about a 7" receiver, not the entire length. There were also jobs where a part was in the lathe just so we could smooth the surface finish out with scotch brite.
@kevinc8217
@kevinc8217 2 месяца назад
I've worked in shops making barrels as well, but everything was done with coolant. Depends on the inserts you're using (ceramics you don't want coolant) but usually turning without a coolant or cutting oil, you risk deformation or work hardening. With the short section you said you were turning it may not have been an issue. But yeah, it certainly wouldn't be down the entire barrel. It would warp the bore. And Scotch Brite is definitely a staple in machine shops for polishing lol

Long sleeves run the risk of being caught in the rotating parts of machines and can severely damage your arms 2) Scope mounts - Finished parts (the black ones) would never be located on the same table as in-process parts.

By the early 1700s barrel making was already a specialized trade. Gunsmiths bought barrels, they didn't waste time trying to make them. Look at some of the videos of the barrel making process. It takes specialized machines and tools to drill a hole that is between 5mm and 13mm in diameter and up to 900mm deep and have it absolutely straight and to size end to end.

If you want 1000 yard accuracy it requires a few thousand dollars in tooling that maybe you can not afford but a gov sponsored terror org like hamas can.

@@jw-hy5nq Those weren't 1 MOA rifles for sure. Most companies that make precision rifles cold forge the rifling by inserting a tungsten carbide rod with the correct profile into the bore and then crimp-hammer the blank around it so it has to be screwed out. Drilling and reaming a barrel blank to within a few micons is outside the capabilities of most shops that don't have ambient temperature control. Long-boring a rifling pattern into it afterwards, without screwing it up to the point it becomes essentially just a somewhat poor hunting rifle, is even harder. So that you knew a machinist who made ghetto rifles really doesn't tell anyone much until we see a 1000m grouping shot from a gun rest, as Hamas is claiming to be making sniper rifles. Not bullet hoses.

@@KuK137 Except Ian has done extensive videos on Polish resistance fire arms production. And they made sub machine guns. Not sniper rifles. Because making a simple blowback sub machine gun that will reasonably reliably hit at ranges a 9mm Parabellum can realistically do is a far cry from making a sniper rifle that can hit something so far away you need a scope the size of a roll of biscuits to see it. The Poles weren't idiots. They knew the limitation of their production means and produced firearms accordingly. Ok machinist of 14 years here. You’re correct on the lathe parts, they look like just a widget and you’re correct that he was pretending to drill an already parted off part. On the mill I still call bs. They had the same part just in 2 different finishes. And the finished scope mounts were plated, painted, blued, whatever but not drilled and tapped for the upper half of the clamshell. Also normally when you make a bunch of parts you set the machine up for 1 operation at a time, on a manual mill that’s usually one cut at a time. So all your parts will look about the same, with only difference being that operation. Not part color or in varying stages of completion. And as for Hamas doing that engraving, not a chance. IF Hamas is actually making anything, it’s comparable to the last ditch German stuff from the end of WW2. You are correct in calling BS. Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. And to Him, we surrender.” (2:136 / Translated by Community) Salam (Peace) ---

In the Philippines, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (yes, there's a literal terrorist group called 'MILF') has been mass-producing bolt-action anti-materiel rifles for years. While they looked impressive on propaganda shots, many of these _Barits_ had one glaring flaw: They weren't really 'rifles' because they lacked an actual rifled barrel (others were made from recycled M2 barrels, providing atleast some basic accuracy). I suppose the intended use for improvised anti-materiel rifles is less about precision sniping, and more about disabling trucks and lightly armored vehicles like the M113 at close ranges during an ambush.

Its probably fair to say they aren't making these rifles in Gaza, and there are a number of issues here, but as a gunsmithing educated machinist of 12 years, I can see a plausible reason for a lot of these shots. As a disclaimer, I haven't done any gunsmithing since I finished school. 1) At 1:50 there is discussion about OD turning the "barrels" This may not be final contouring. Depending the material condition and follow on processes a cleaning cut of raw bar stock may be necessary. Secondly, these clips are showing the work at different stages of completion. They may not be contiguous machining, we cant know, and based on that equipment, likely took several hours to complete. Also, based on that equipment, smoking is normal. Its probably the lubricant flashing off. 2) Polishing with that cloth on a spinning lathe. I've done it a lot. Especially on a long bar in a old manual lathe without a steady rest. Tolerance is tough to hold, chatter is a real concern. Polish for looks or for final sizing. Not great for making money, but it works. 3) At 3:10 regarding this drilling. Based on the position of the bar in both shots, they are not contiguous. You may be seeing two different things. One is drilling. The other is using the drill bit to catch the cutoff and prevent it from falling into the chip tray. Its crude but effective and would explain the imagery. More interestingly, it looks like they have contoured 2-3 of these "Bolt heads" before drilling and cutoff. On a manual lathe, I would avoid that at all costs. I have since had the opportunity to work with a film crew on a machining project and we staged everything for filming. Even as a machinist of 12 years with real machine tools on the day of filming we faked everything. Great content as always!

There were over 2250 operations to produce an SMLE, and Pratt & Whitney's setup reduced the man-hours required from 48 or more to 23.5 hours per rifle. Your analysis might be correct but you have to remember that their goal isn't to make record breaking high precision gun or ammo. They don't have the luxury to access everything, so they use and reuse whatever they have. Also, They might be using in a lot closer range than a typical sniper. The goal is to try and be self sufficient and be able stand a chance in a fight.

I think you've hit on something, but it's not necessarily that they don't have the capability that they're claiming to have. It's that there are people going through the motions for the sake of a video, but for one reason or another aren't actually doing what they would normally do if they were actually trying to build a rifle. (Save, I suppose, the scope mounts at the end.) Maybe they were rushing to get the video done or something. They are doing this in a war zone, after all.

This is a video produced by Hamas' propaganda department. Of course they're not going to show you anything other than what they want you to see. I think the reason for it is plausible deniability. If Iran is seen as the one arming Hamas then the west will use it as an excuse to sanction or even attack Iran. Iranians at this point despite the tense situation is not wanting to escalate this. It wants to keep good relations with Gulf States.

I don't think they necessarily took apart complete rifles to fake the manufacturing. I think it's more likely that they receive rifles from Iran, but smuggled as individual parts. And they simply put them together on site from those. It's much easier to smuggle a rifle completely broken down into parts, since you can hide most of the stuff easily in a shipment of regular hardware and spare parts. Even if you are looking for gun parts, except for the barrel, receiver and bolt head, most of the stuff can easily look like regular machine parts.

The Dot-Peen serial numbers are consistent with DIO markings as seen on 56-1 rifles, AM-50, 107mm rockets, PG-7 launchers, PK machine guns, and other items. Some of the scopes sent with these rifles should be Belarussian (sic) or Chinese copies of RG-004A1 Scopes. The ammo re-loading information is great!

Iraq War Linguist here! Having seen dozens of hand-made guns from the region, I can say that it's entirely possible that they can make a "thing" that *looks* like a sniper rifle, and can semi-reliably 'make a bullet go' but would absolutely be a FAR cry from a viable, sniper-class weapon. think of your gun enthusiast cousin, with no training, building his first crappy (and questionably legal) gun on half-broken, uncalibrated, second-hand machines. back in my day, OIF/OEF, most of these were AK variants, as they could refurbish junkers, or get stamped parts for cheap then jury rig the rest with literal garbage. I saw AK's for as little as $7 USD. If I were to guess, I'd say they're repairing damaged units, Frankenstein-ing them together, and/or assembling kits provided by Iran/Russia. Your translation of the weapon markings is pretty accurate, the patch reads "Bandaqiya Al Shaheed 'Adnaan Al Gol" or "The Rifle of Martyr Adnan's Ghost" (the connotation being one of vengeance or retribution) or more appropriately "The Ghost Of Adnan Rifle" بندقية = Bandaqiya = Rifle الشهيد= Shaheed = martyr عدنان = Adnan = name الغول = Al Gol = the ghost (same as the star)
@abadran8174
@abadran8174 6 месяцев назад
AL GHOUL is just his last name, but al ghoul would also mean "the boogie man" in Arabic rather than the ghost. But anyway, yeah, it's just Adnan's last name.
@lady_draguliana784
@lady_draguliana784 6 месяцев назад
@@abadran8174 interesting, it's not following the naming conventions I'm familiar with, I had assumed it was a nickname/code name or 'warrior moniker', which some in Al-Qaeda were fond of, but you're quite right, it seems to be his given name... very odd... Thanks! that would definitely change the context of it, and therefore the translation. "the Adnan Algol Rifle" 'ghost' was how we were expected to translate it, as a known euphemism, but, if I were to pick a mythical creature westerners are familiar with that most closely resembles a Ghoul, it'd be a 'zombie', except it's got agency and sentience like a vampire... (and "Adnan's Zombie Rifle" surely has a nice ring to it!) But that would've upset the sensibilities of my Arabic teachers, I think! 🤣 I learned the hard way not to liken or compare mythologies with several of them, especially our elderly Egyptian teacher! 🤣 but we're diverging into mythology which, while an other favorite topic, is off topic😅
