I like how Jefferson looks very impressed and respectful of Hamilton when Hamilton starts his response, but as it continues, he gets more and more pissed and hating.
Jefferson likes it when Hamilton is attacking him instead of the argument; he knows that's no way to win a debate. He starts to get upset when Hamilton says "The Union gets a boost, you'd rather give it a sedative" because now Hamilton is making a real argument. Then Hamilton makes it about slavery and Jefferson gets mad because he knows that's a great way to reframe the issue in Hamilton's favor, and by the end Jefferson gets confrontational because he got out-debated. It's good character work because Jefferson is so confident in himself, he doesn't care if you attack him personally. But he does care about losing the debate.

lol I had to do this thing for history where I dressed as a historical character and basically teach people about that person. I was Thomas Jefferson and my friend was alexander Hamilton. I told him that Hamilton said that bc I already knew and he was all like “really?!” And laughed. Lol
Some things I love about this: - I *love* the fact that Lin's trying *so hard* to keep from cracking up when he imitates Jefferson. - "Welcome to the present; we're running a real nation, would you like to join us?" Just shows how out of touch Jefferson was when he returned home to America - And that comment about the "we know who's *really* doing the planting." Huge point made, especially for the time - Hamilton's little dance at 2:11 to 2:14 - "Madison, Jefferson, take a walk! Hamilton, take a walk!" - the fact that this is pretty much every family gather; Washington is basically the father, watching his kids argue, trying to keep them from getting too out of hand in front of the rest of the family; Madison is the middle child watching his older and younger siblings fight, Hamilton's mocking of Jefferson hilariously screams "I'm not copying you!", and his last remark is the one thing that finally forces Washington to react. As the youngest gets told off, the two oldest are flaunting the fact that they got away with it
100%. Also the whole thing shows that even though they were supposed to be getting rid of nobles and status-from-birth, they all look down on him subconsciously for coming from poverty. Like he can't get away with being with being nearly as disrespectful or insulting/combative as Jefferson or the others. He constantly has to prove that he deserves to be there.
He’s trying to be like “haha members of the crowd, nothing and I mean nothing is wrong but oh would you look at that, we’re experiencing some technical difficulties but of course nothing and I mean nothing else is wrong.”
I’m sure he wasn’t breaking character and was just acting… You got to remember they performed the show eight times a week for 2 years straight. In many interviews the cast members talked about how after performing the same show for like the 500th time they are just in “auto pilot” and don’t really think about what they’re doing on stage because after doing it for so many times it just becomes muscle memory.
Why does no one talk about 2:07 He goes to check if Madison's okay and then proceeds to mouth something like "hey!" When Hamilton insults him :,) it's too sweet
it's james madison but he's played by the same actor! :) also the coughing fit is a part of his character. james madison was sickly in real life (multiple attacks of malaria, epilepsy, depression, and more)
i have listened to the first cabinet battle from hamilton just to hear the part when jefferson says “look, when britain taxed our tea, we got frisky. imagine what gon happen when you try to tax our whiskyyyy” and then that one ensemble member is like “AlCaHoL” 🤣🤣🤣
Yuuup. For all their talk of getting rid of the aristocracy and having birth determine your status, Hamilton can't get away with nearly as much as the wealthy cabinet members.
I know there was so much packed into this play, but I almost wish they explored more of Madison's relationship with Hamilton: they cooperated extensively to campaign for the adoption of the Constitution and co-wrote the Federalist Papers. Madison did eventually become a strong opponent of Hamilton, but their falling apart could have been explored in a more nuanced matter a la Burr.
Yeah I thought about that too. I thought it was very interesting how they went from joining forces to defend the Constitution to being enemies. There IS quite a lot packed into the play though.
Hamilton did better in cabinet battle 2 and made valid points, but here he still did kinda talk about the problem, just did more roasting. Also he lowkey projected his anger on Jefferson “Keep ranting, we know who’s really doing the planting”

Then Jefferson taunts him by "if the shoe fits, bear it", basically saying that it is true and Hamilton just doesn't want to admit it. Then, at the end of the song, Hamilton basically threatens to kick Jefferson's ass by having him bend over and "showing him where his shoe fits" 😅
There is just something so satisfying about Madison-Jefferson harmony and how these characters keep supporting each other... "Why he even brings a thunder" LITERALLY lives in my head rent free and i relisten to this song WAY too often just to hear Madison-Jefferson duet
So there's 2 parts to it: right after Jefferson and Madison sing "You don't have the votes!", Jefferson laughs very similarly to the song (very pronounced "ha"s) Then, when they tell Hamilton he needs congressional approval and has no votes, Jefferson says "It's like a blunder sometimes that makes me wonder why I even bring the thunder". It's a play on the original lyrics "It's like a jungle sometimes that makes me wonder how I keep from going under."
