On April 16, 2015, the cast of Hamilton the Musical performed a special tribute to "A Chorus Line", the groundbreaking musical that premiered on the same stage 40 years prior.
I LOVE that the Hamilton ensemble got solos- I can't wait to see where they all end up next, so much passion and love.. Ariana, Sasha, Carleigh, Ephraim, Jon, Seth, Thayne, Betsy.. Couldn't take my eyes off them during the show, was WONDERFUL to see them have a moment to themselves. :D
Me: *sees this video* Me: *hasn't actually heard of A Chorus Line* Me: *googles it and reads its wikipedia page* Me: *comes back to watch this and cries*
@ツMyUsernameIsThis A Chorus Line is a musical that follows multiple dancers auditioning to be in a chorus line. This was the first time a musical focused on the ensemble actors of a show. In the show, this song is performed after one of the characters is injured, ending their career. The rest of the dancers are asked I believe something akin to, “What if tomorrow you never danced again?” Or, “What if you were never able to dance again? How would you feel?” As this song says, they wouldn’t regret anything. The talent they had for dance was only temporary. They would make the most of it while they could.
I'll just add that A Chorus Line includes a lot about "identity" - at the start of the musical, you'll see a group of dancers, usually horribly (and deliberately, which is hard!) out of sync, dressed differently, all coming from different backgrounds. As the story progresses, and many are given "thank you" - code for "get lost", the ensemble is reduced to a core group and the individuality is gradually molded into ... well, the closing number is "One". "One singular sensation, every little step she takes. One thrilling combination, every move that she makes..." And I absolutely agree that it connects beautifully with Hamilton. But for anyone who's been in any theatrical production you'll appreciate the special moments that happen during endless rehearsals and finally when you have an audience. I think Amaya puts it pretty well (I adjusted the voice a bit), "make the most of it while you can!" (Not a bad life lesson.) "5, 6, 7, 8..." [which is "A Chorus Line" code for "Let's do it again!"]
@@dwmwat Thank you. Your reply is very eloquent as well. I’ve been in a few theatrical productions, and I love that feeling of connecting with my cast during the rehearsal process and when we get to show our hard work to an audience. It’s just magical.
this made me cry because my mums favourite musical when she was my age was A Chorus Line (she watched the cassette tape every Saturday with her sister) and now my favourite musical is Hamilton and OH GOD IM SOBBING
Stop it now your making me cry 😢 😭 🤧. My mom also loved a chorus line and did a college performance of it. I used to play piano for her to help her practice. We played what I did for love at her funeral 5 years ago. God I can't stop crying. Thanks for sharing.
I was in a production of A Chorus Line many years ago (Al). There was something really special about this show. The rawness and simplicity of it. No fancy sets. I love Hamilton with a passion and this was such a fantastic homage to this great show.
I'm going to tell a story I'll be telling as an old lady. In the early 90s, b'way was dying. It certainly wasn't a huge spectacular like it is now To help sales, Broadway had these incredible deals. Children's tickets were half price or free. On top of that, MTA also offered free or reduced fares for children. Suddenly taking a family of 5 to The City (a mere 45 min train ride) to see a show was still a splurge, but affordable. We didn't really go on vacation as a kid, but I did see a bunch of shows. They were literally giving tickets away. Buy one get one. Anything to fill the seats. My first show was Les Miserables. My older sister's was a chorus line and it seriously delights me to think of a 6 year old watching Hamilton, with so much stuff going over their head. And then to hear it again years later and be like, damn. My parents let me watch this!? I'm so freaking glad Broadway survived. Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now (But not over there, just focus on b'way 🤣)
So many people both in our broadway audiences, and yes, even on stage, do not know all those shoulders they have been standing on. 40 years is the blink of an eye. a generation earlier, Broadway saw new stars like Ethel Merman, Alfred Drake, Gertrude lawerence, Robert Preston, and Carol Channing. Its nice to see this moment.
Before Hamilton The Musical: Person- Hey, do you know who Alexander Hamilton is? Other Person- Excuse me? Who's that, is it a Deli Brand? Person- What?!? No! He's a- oh never mind I don't know who he is either. After The Musical Hamilton: Person- Hey do you know who Alexander Hamilton is? Other Person- HECK YAH!!! HE IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like if you agree 👍
I know this is 40 years ago, at the time.. I saw A Chorus Line! it was my first "big girl" show, I think I was 13. Made my 18 year old son go see Hamilton with me and yes tears to see the ensemble singing. Amazing Just found this video BTW, LOL
from Left to Right: Ephraim, Chris, Renee, Seth, Jon, Sasha, Sydney, Phillipa, Daveed, Lin, Betsy, Leslie, Groff, Oak, Ariana, Jasmine, Anthony, Carleigh, Thayne and Javier (pops in at 3:52)
Haha I feel you Gilmore Girls is always on my brain!! This combo is perfection! I'm feeling there will for sure be a ref to it in season's with ASP being such a broadway nut haha
I can't name any other show that made the fans love the ensemble (as individuals) as much as the principals :') so this A Chorus Line celebration felt quite on point also 2:58 Lacamoire I see what you did there xD
Wow, what a blast! To see the original cast of A Chorus Line come back to the very stage where it all began at the Public Theater is giving me goosebumps! That show will always be special to me.
Chorus line was and still is the most creative, beautifully done and wonderful musical, I love the director, choreographer and cast members who gave their all to make this musical so enjoyable and very memorable, and to The cast of Hamilton and Lin - manuel mirandad.... my hat goes off to all of you,
I love this so much 😭😍🎭🎶 If you haven’t seen it, I recommend the documentary Every Little Step about the casting of the ACL revival in 2007! So many of them have since become famous!
A "chorus line" is comprised of the backup dancers/singers in a musical; not the leads. A "CHORUS LINE" was a ground-breaking, very successful musical on Broadway 40 years ago, about those seondary players (the chorus line), and told their individual stories. Check out A CHORUS LINE on Wikipedia for more info.
They should’ve done “Dance Ten; Looks Three” just saying, I feel like that song is the most appropriate for this musical and their representation of A Chorus Line
