This is my review of the Hamilton PSR black PVD edition. Its a reproduction of the classic Pulsar P2 of the 1970s. In thie video I will compare this modern LED Hamiton against some vintage LED watches of the day.
Please check First Class Watches out who have kindly loaned me this watch for review. They do have some great watches and international shipping so please if you like what I am doing on this channel then have a look at their site, there is always some good deals to have!

I purchased the steel version of this watch one year ago. I agree that the price is steep, but they can easily be found on the 2nd hand market for about $500. I paid the extra money because I didn't want the hassle if I wasn't happy with it. First, I disagree that this watch isn't legible in the sun. It's perfectly legible. You just have to look at the watch straight on. That's one of the reason Hamilton claims this watch costs more. It's a dual LCD/LED watch, so that you can see the time in the light without pressing the button. I think it works perfectly fine. Second, the bracelet is one of the best that Hamilton makes. It's comfortable, it tapers nicely, it's just sweet. Third, and this I can only speak from my personal experience, it's by far, the most accurate watch I own. After a year of testing it every other week, it's running at -.02 sec/day. -. 02. That's about a second a month. That's flipping amazing for an $800 watch if you ask me. I agree that I wish it had a date. But then, I think of how many watches I wish DIDN'T have a date, like almost all Grand Seikos. And how many watches I love without the date, like a Rolex Sub or Explorer. So, I try to think of the PSR as a super accurate, reto-cool, three hander watch. Then, I'm ok without the date 😉

The green one looks great.

Excellent review! Just got stainless one with red display. It's my 3rd Hammy. Picked up 6-30-24. Got it cause 30% off. Simple watch, nothing too it, but I love the look. This review I watched months ago and it's the reason I bought it. Great review, I loved the history off this watch and the way you told. Hamilton should give you commission for my purchase

What a super opening to the review! I'm very much a analogue person and never took a lot of interest in digital watchers. (I think I just like to see the second hand moving to know the watch is working.) So your review has raised my interest to look at them in a different light. Thank you Mike.

Thanks for the complement on the intro, Thought it would be a bit of fun although filming in darkness its not good on the autofocus! I have a big collection of vintage digital watches from some of the first Seiko and Casio believe it or not they were very high tech and very expensive at the time. Here we are some 50 years on and they are still working. digital and LED were ground breaking at the time, all this early quartz was the beginning of the quartz crisis. I find it must have been quite an exciting time, everyone only had mechanical watches that needed maintenance and were not all that precise. Here came quartz with its seconds per month accuracy and for little money and no maintenance. Heck I am a mechanical guy at heart but had i have been old enough in the 70s to understand all this I would have changed to quartz.

Loved the review and I was quite surprised to see the reproduction of the old Pulsar type. I'd really like to learn more about the LED watches in your own collection....I have about 10 LED Pulsars and another 10 of other vintage LED watches.

I think they chose the right model to reproduce, I nearly bought a P3 years ago at a watch fair for cheap money. I procrastinated over a coffee and when I went back it had sold. Regretted that ever since to be honest. I did a video on my LED collection over on the main channel but it was 4 years ago. some new ones have arrived since then. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XOB8aOnlPQM.html

@@mywatchreviews Wonderful, thanks for the link! The Commodore seemed to have quite a bright display, or at least it came across that way on the video. The two-button Trafalgar is stunningly beautiful.
@mywatchreviews
@mywatchreviews Год назад
Yes the commodore is very bright. it broke recently due to a battery leak in my care! took some cleaning and fettling to get it going again. The two button Trafalgar is a bit more rare, I have seen working examples fetch up to £300 before. I bought mine broken, I could not fix it but 12 months later found a working module in a really poor quality donor that actually cost me more than the original one!

Always a balanced review, and I appreciate the history lessons too. I agree about the lack of function. I get that its an homage to the 70s version, but it seems more than a missed opportunity, it seems almost cheap.

Traditional LEDs from the 70s no. On these the screen is visible but very faint before you press the button. Its the button pressing people like and the charm of original LEDs.
@hamshackleton
@hamshackleton Год назад
It's a shame they didn't go a step further, and include radio-control so the watch auto-corrects. There would be no visual difference, but it would save a lot of button pushing twice a year! - - - I've got the circuit-board of a Sinclair Black somewhere, it turns up now and then. The plastic case is long-gone, of course, it fell apart! (and the flexible ribbon cable wiring failed, as well!) The case was so flimsy that if I gripped something, the watch display came on - so batteries didn't last long.
@mywatchreviews
@mywatchreviews Год назад
I need to get my Sinclair looked at, I had in mind to bring it to the main channel but I am thinking it will be a failure video as they are so flimsy. It does light up but cant set the time and it does some weird things. For now its in the box without batteries waiting in the queue like everything else!
@hamshackleton
@hamshackleton Год назад
@@mywatchreviews I suspect it will be a broken track on those flimsy ribbon cables. I eventually hard-wired mine, with a couple of micro-switches, and used it as a tiny wall clock running on triple A batteries! If the case on yours is still good, I'd leave it as is, for posing with!

It's a gorgeous watch but I agree, it's too expensive for what it is. Somehow it lacks the warmth of the original LEDs - of running in the playground at school, going into the shade, cupping your hand round the watch and squinting to see what time it is! Your Trafalgar watches - now they are the real deal.
@MrPleers

I'm missing the very cool looking ruby red crystal. This one has a colourless one over a red display. So, from the sides it looks different.
@mywatchreviews
@mywatchreviews Год назад
I agree. I still like how they have made a modern one but feel they could have either made further improvements like date or stuck as true to an original by using proper sentimental LEDs to make the numbers. All of mine are original LED and many I have had to repair to get them to work.
@zaygezunt

@@mywatchreviews Yes, at least Hamilton paid tribute to a remarkable watch and I'm sure many people will love it, especially if they are too young to remember the originals. I have your video of your LED collection saved on my 'Fave Watches' playlist for when I need a nostalgia hit.

How does it not have a date function when the original LED's did? For that kind of money, it REALLY needs a date function.
@MrPleers
@MrPleers Год назад
Not only that. The original one did also not had the LCD always on display. But they included that. So I think Hamilton did just cut a corner by not including a date function.
@mywatchreviews
@mywatchreviews Год назад
I was not aware the P2 had a date but it does not surprise me, I could not get it to operate on the Hamilton, long press to the button went to setting mode. double press did nothing so I can only assume its not a feature which is crazy really in this day an age of technology.
