I know Daveed Diggs deserves all the love but can we give Okieriete Onaodowan some love too? It’s so amazing how badass and buff his voice was in the first act as Hercules Mulligan and now he’s this weak, smooth voiced James Madison in the act two and it’s just so awesome!

Daveed admitted himself that he doesn’t like to sing much, and he prefers to rap like in guns and ships (you should definitely react to that one). His singing range is limited, but his stage presence makes up for it and is my favourite.

Daveed Diggs won the Tony for this role. He wasn't just nominated.

The dance, the energy, the walk, just DAVEED, a national treasure... This song is so underrated... But I'd like to highlight Oak here, he just came in with a TOTALLY different approach, at first sight I wouldnt know Hercules and Madison are the same person, and he deserves more recognition for it

A jazzy blues number for the guy who missed the late 80s because he was in FRANCE? Lin you absolute genius

I just realized that when daveed was about to go down the stairs, one of the servants tried holding his hand and he brushed it off with disgust. Mad props to the choreographer, damn.

Love the juxtaposition there at the end -- Alexander almost passive aggressively, awkwardly injecting himself into the conversation with his own melody while Washington is rolling out the red carpet for Jefferson's arrival with that beautiful little vocal run.

I’d posit that Daveed had the most physically demanding role out of any of the main cast members. He was bouncing all over the place a lot of time. And he performed some extremely complex rap sequences flawlessly.

...No doubt this is Daveed Digg's number...but Okieriete Onaodowan's whole section in this song lives in my mind rent-free, I'm in love with his voice/performance.

I love his style as he performs both of his characters. He is so upbeat and fun.

I just realized when Hamilton said "I'll see you on the other side" to Eliza right before he dies, it was a callback to his last line to Lafayette.

His energy and rhythm and swagger throughout the entire number always astounds me. I love him so much for it. He oozes charisma and personality. It’s crazy.

Daveed Diggs has one of those outstanding voices that I can always recognize no matter what he’s singing or what production he’s in. I think he did a fantastic job in Hamilton but he’s in some other great works as well!

"Sally, be a lamb" = Sally Hemings, Jefferson's late wife's half-sister, his slave, and "mistress" (I mean, it's not like she could give consent. Also she was like...14, if I remember right, so even if she wasn't enslaved it would be beyond creepy.) I love and hate Jefferson in this show. I mean, he's portrayed as being so cool, but he's also an absolutely awful human being, and Daveed Diggs shows this all so brilliantly.

daveed diggs always says how he never sang before this role so it was such a huge and hard change for him, but for his lack of training for it, he pulls it off pretty well

The only thing that could steal the show from Daveed is the genius of the cheeky political statement in the choreography. The entire company on their knees scrubbing floors as he's introduced sets the stage for the irony written into the number.

I actually really like Daveed's voice in this role. I think he does an amazing job of singing and dancing (bouncing) all over the place at the same time. A traditional Broadway vocal is not needed for this role and I don't think I would like it as much if it was sung with one.

Daveed Diggs is an electromagnetic force. You can't help but be drawn to him and watch his every move on stage. He stands out in a cast full of stand-outs.

It's amazing how Daveed was able to perfectly portray two very different characters in one single musical.

Just love the energy when Daveed prances onto the stage! I feel the ensemble fills in for any tone he might be missing. I laughed out loud the first time it was clever and so much fun!.

You’ve gotta address the absolute brilliant change from mulligan to Madison by Ok!! He’s fantastic in both roles. I mean, I can’t pick a favorite, cause they’re all great in their own way...I’m just gonna go watch it again. 😂

Daveed has such a stage presence and humor throughout this number. But the stance that he takes at the very end of it (7:58) is what captured my devotion to him as an artist. TELL ME he doesn't look EXACTLY like Jefferson in that last scene. It moves from I'm playing this character (and mocking him) to I AM THIS CHARACTER.

That "I missed the late 80's" line kills me every time. The perfect post-intermission piece!

Kinda wish you had commented on Oak's (Madison's) amazing tone quality in his line cuz it's just *chef's kiss*. To me, his transition between his sound as Hercules Mulligan to James Madison rivals Jazzy's transition from Peggy to Maria Reynolds. They both do such an impressive job of fully changing the style and tone quality of their voices to fit the different characters they play and it's hella impressive!

Daveed is amazing and I love this performance..... but can I just say... Christopher Jackson sings the best few seconds of the entire song. He is phenomenal. ♥️♥️

I dont know if i have ever used swag in a sentence but Daveed, especially in this song, makes me use it. Its ridiculous how much swag and just how cool he is.

The music when he’s walking down the stairs is perfect. And I absolutely love how Daveed played TJeffs (I want to call Jefferson that cause I think he’d hate it), and it’s so different from how Daveed is irl. He plays TJeffs like he’s such a douche bag and I love it! From the fuchsia coat to the swagger and energy Daveed gives him, it’s a blast to watch, and sing in the car with your mom.

Love watching the Bullet through the entire show. She stands in for Sally in this number and directs Jefferson, a instrument in Hamilton's downfall, straight to her target

So Daveed is sending himself a letter. Jefferson to Lafayette 🤣 Yep and Sally was the mother of some of his children. One of my absolute favorite songs in Hamilton. Thanks for this.

I love how Daveed just hams up Jefferson's introduction at the start, it's so on brand for this character and this song.

Daveed is incredible. He really gets into this role to the point that he is unrecognizable as the other character he plays. It feels like another actor walked in for the first time in the show. I've seen a few other casts in Hamilton. Daveed my not be the best singer or dancer but, to my mind, he is the only truly irreplaceable player in the show. The spark, the humor, the strut. No one else has seemed so at home in the part.

This is my favorite song of the show and Daveed is amazing.

If I have to be completely honest, I have a love-hate relationship with Jefferson😂😂 The “uh France??” was improvised that line that was made into the song. The same goes for “Alright, alright, That's what I'm talkin' about” in Satisfied because Anthony Ramos, who plays Laurens and Philip, kept saying🤷🏻‍♀️ Edit: for my last comment for the previous Ham. video about me being early, I was sarcastic, slightly 😂😂

That lamb you mentioned is Sally Hemmings, Jefferson's concubine and mother of his children. He took her to France and got even closer to her. Some say he actually loved her. My thought is that he was simply a slave holder that took advantage of a very young girl. As for this number I could never see another person playing ol' Thomas -- Diggs was stellar and absolutely slayed the performance. I loved the entire show but it would have been a different one all together had another person without Daveed Digg's charisma and personality to drive this character from page to stage.

We need to talk about Oak! He doesn't have a whole song of his own, but his tone is so rich! Maybe talk about how he was unceremoniously dumped from Natasha, Pierre.

With his purple costume with ruffles and his over-the-top stage demeanor, I thought Jefferson was a throw back to the late-1980s Morris Day from the Time.

That line about not being able to believe that they are free struck me too as so clever about the difference between the colonizers and the slaves. As has been mentioned below, the line about "Sally, be a lamb, darlin'" is a deliberate reference inserted to highlight Thomas Jefferson's well known affair with his slave, Sally Hemings. As was also mentioned in one or more comments, she was his late wife's half sister (slave owner father/slave mother). She accompanied his daughter to Paris when she herself was still just a young teenager and Thomas started a relationship with her that she had no ability to refuse. She had multiple children that were later confirmed to have been his. The show is so deliberate and intentional and there is always something new discover on top of it being incredibly entertaining.

Fun fact: Daveed can't dance. He knows this. I saw him in an interview talking about the Jefferson dance and he said that they tried to choreograph him and he couldn't get it. The best he could do was the sort of silly Jefferson walk and they finally decided to keep it. Vocally his is the weakest of the cast, but his energy and his ability to rap super fast are amazing.

I love how Burr's line from the beginning of this number is present throughout the show and changes based on his opinion of Hamilton. Toward the end of the musical that line is thrown out almost as insult.

Daveed is a phenomenal actor, his portrayal of 2 different characters in 2 different acts for the same musical is brilliant. He gives each of his 2 characters something different to ensure the characters message comes across well. I love how genius LMM is with how upbeat and jazz/ blues this song is. The choreography I believe is basically based upon DD not being able to quite get it right so they left his funny Jefferson walk in, a sort of swagger that he continues throughout the rest of act 2. Also Oak, Chris and Lin, their parts are brilliant. And as always the ensemble are killing it.

One of my favourites ! Ah who am I kidding? They are all my favourites ! But I love Daveed Digg’s. He is so energetic and funny. His dance moves are just the best. I smile all the way through his number 😊

The Funny Thing I Heard Is That When Jefferson First Comes Out The Chord Turns Minor. Lol

We went to see Hamilton here in Australia in April and then we were lucky enough to win the $10 lottery last week so got to go again with front row seats . We love Hamilton 😀

Jefferson: what did i miss? Hamilton: the whole first act Jefferson; *whispers in french accent* or did i? Hamilton: *confused screaming*

I saw there was some criticism saying that the play was ignoring or not really addressing slaves, but they very cleverly show metaphors in What Did I Miss. The song itself, with him being accompanied by his slaves in this upbeat number in itself represents how history makes the revolution and the 'freedom' sound great for the American people. Since the song is in Thomas' perspective, his slaves' lack of freedom is entirely ignored, and they are expected to follow his lead while he indulges in the 'freedom', seeing it all through his rose-coloured glasses-like how history is shared and explained today.

I believe Lin wanted Daveed for this because of his phenomenal rap skills after they did Freestyle Love Supreme together. He is the song write and rapper in the group clipping., which is incredible. His cadence in the song Blood of the Fang, gives me heart palpitations. The movie he co-wrote and stars in Blindspotting is my favorite. He does a lot of spoken word/ rapping in it and it's so incredibly well done.

My 5 yr old daughter loves this song. But she adores Lafayette and asks for the dancing Lafayette song. Which is this one :-) The hamilton song I really want and Patiently waiting (not succeeding btw) for "who lives,who does, who tells your story"

Daveed is FANTASTIC

So about the character, Jefferson was kind of a big celebrity amongst the founding fathers even before becoming SecState. He helped write the DoI, invented the swivel chair, and was a HUGE southern personality with a “larger than life” kind of character and air about him. Hence how he’s played and given this piece as well. Then TJ came into a room, he always stole the show.

Couldn't imagine anyone better for the two roles Daveed plays in this musical. He killed it with both performances and that's why he won that Tony. He never did Broadway before, so no, he's not a Broadway actor, but still was meant for every second of Hamilton.

I know this video is about Daveed and yeah, he's great. I have always been stunned by the difference between how Okieriete Onaodowan plays Mulligan and Madison.

I was surprised they included "Sally" in here, but not disappointed.

This song always takes me back to the jazzy style of the old Schoolhouse Rock videos. I’ve always wondered if this number was a nod to the those and how they taught a generation of kids about the revolutionary war?
