Unique Natalie Dessay ! Son Ophélie reste l'un des plus grands moments de l'Histoire de l'opéra. Un pareil délire dans son air de la folie va au-delà de l'interprétation. C'est la grâce qui l'a touché et qui nous touche.

este compositr muy académico fue un segundo Gounod,en composición fue una autoridad reconocida,consigio dos éxitos perdurables,la ópera comica Mignon en cuyo estilo empezó su carrera operística y luego la qu estamos oyendo..DIO su canto del cisne operístico con Françoise di Rímini 1882.En Alemania ha sido el único país que conservaba su popularidad.

Natalie Dessay is superb and (after 27 minutes of listening) others are very good too!

Even if we could find here and there, in the few recordings of this underrated opera, a better singer for one or other role, a more interesting direction or some more complete edition, 20 years after, this production is the best ever made. Yes, Hampson haven't the voice of Milnes nor the commitment of Degout. Dessay is a light soprano but she's might be on the whole the best Ophelie and this is the climax of her career. Van Dam is a luxury in Claudius, as Ramey was. De Young is not perfect for sure (the French and the line) but Gertrude was so badly cast during decades she's on the podium. And Plasson is a standard of conducting French opera. To watch and lesson again and again by whom love Hamlet and Ambroise Thomas.

The music and singing is absolutely wonderful ...!!! - the drama absolutely horrible: No Shakespearean depths of thought and psychology; no traces of the metaphysical-allegorical profundity of Shakespeares' main source Saxo Grammaticus ... Alas ...!!! This utterly non-dramatic opera does not belong in a theatre, but in a concert hall today. Thanks a lot for publishing anyway!

Thomas Hampson is horrible. Sherrill Milnes is much better.
