One of my biggest weaknesses was being too tense, especially in front of people. Also, I didn't have an electric for a long time, so I learned Hendrix, Floyd and Zeppelin on an acoustic. Playing for people like that, I developed the bad habit of trying to be loud as possible, for which you need muscle tension. It's only in the last little while that I've been consciously relaxing and my playing is smoother. It's one reason why I play better when I've had a toke. I'm chilled.
@@Itsme-vd3dx Oh yes, All of my guitars have been set up by a pro. I have 17 now, but that's going to drop to 13. I've stopped playing 'he who dies with the most toys, wins.'
That is one of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen. Deceptively simple looking but the symmetry and definition of the grain are stunning. Oh, and thanks for the very useful lesson. Goes to the top of my saved tutorials. Thanks.
whenever im thinking to myself "hmm i need to practice/improve on this" you always post a video detailing just how!! your videos are very informative and a godsend for beginner-to-intermediate players like myself. thank you for taking the time to make all these lessons.
Thank you so much for your videos sir. I've been watching your videos for a week now and I've been practicing a lot. You're one of the best teachers on RU-vid for sure!! ✌
You do, that shouldn’t happen at all. It’s something that happens to beginners but it’s not something that players of skill will do. I’m not sure why he’s teaching it like this as it’s a habit you will have to break to be any good at this. You don’t flick, you pull off and out. No other string should be hit.
@@Pit_Lord nah, if you only pull off and don't flick it a little bit, it won't make enough noise. And it's fine to hit the string below if you are good at muting your strings.
My huge problem with pull offs (btw, they should be officially called FLICK offs - much clearer!) is that my cracked calluses get stuck as I’m doing them even though I try to file them and moisturize with various products regularly. Any way to get past that? Can’t flick when my skin gets caught lol. Also, any advice for doing the hammer on technique on an acoustic? I’ve been trying this for some time now, and I feel like the volume isn’t very audible. My fingers are better at getting sound out of each note, but it’s tough to get good volume no matter how hard I hammer. Anyone know how I can get better volume on an acoustic guitar?
This is a valid point. I thought I was the only one with this issue. I have a hard time flicking the string when my callouses keep catching the string.
@@williamritchie5462 I’ve tried that, but then I get caught and start my fingers start tripping over the strings lol. I use coated D’addario XT or XS strings, and that doesn’t help at all. I was also hoping that this problem would get better with time, but it really hasn’t changed. I always wonder what professional musicians do about this issue and what their calluses look like before, during, and after playing! Justin should really make a callus care video about this specific problem!
9:20 better for first finger to mute or better to practice the flick-off where you rest on the adjacent string? What is more versatile and prevents bad habits?
The convention on scale and chord diagrams is red = root note. Black is all the other notes. www.justinguitar.com/guitar-lessons/reading-chord-box-diagrams-mt-203 Cheers 😊 | Richard_close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide & Approved Teacher
In Acoustic guitar, a fret sound does not last long and hammer sounds are feeble... Then to do 2 hammer down with strike in one Fret how would that even make a sound 🤔🤔🤔
Do you use a hammer to "Hammer on"? the reason is you hammer on your finger, exactly the same as pull off your finger, as it is your finger you are hammering on and pulling off. Incidentally it is a much much better way, instead of FO or F off, which can easily be taken as something else.
They’re called pull offs because you are pulling, not flicking. You shouldn’t need to mute surrounding strings at all if you’re doing it right. You don’t flick down, you pull out. It’s subtle, like drumming your fingers, not using your hands like a claw. You shouldn’t hit the string below it at all. Pull off, don’t flick.
Justin, I believe that everyone has their true calling in life and not everyone finds theirs. You have most definitely found your true calling. You are an exceptional teacher of guitar and I know you have enriched many people’s lives as such. Cheers to you sir and keep up the outstanding work.
Slash the master of those technique. im searching for videos that shows exatcly when slash pull off/hammer and when he plucked the string. really need to know it, still never saw a video that show how he exatcly plays his solos, cause tabs doesnt tell you when to pluck or when to pull off or hammer.
This lesson really hits where other technique lessons miss... at 5:00 or so: You have to learn to relax in order to have a speed breakthrough. Which means you have to pick more quietly and think ahead. Which reduces tension, which makes you faster. Suddenly I'm making gains again, and my hands and wrists hurt less. Been a valuable week of learning because of this lesson.
Beautiful guitar, who makes it? Great lesson. Really concentrate on CURLING your finger joints with legato so you are on your fingertips. Don't make the mistake of letting the pinky finger straighten out, you'll pay for it later. And, hahah, strap them on because pull offs are going to make a Man out of you. Especially pull offs and string crossing..brutal for beginners and even intermediate players.
I like how you call it flick offs instead of pull offs. Pull offs sound like bending down whereas flick motion isn't really pulling, but flicking or picking with left fingers.
Time to practice. My pulloff is strong with my index finger. I can play Personal Jesus no problem. When I try with the pinky and ring finger is when it gets tough. As always a great lesson and one I will be working on for a while. 👍
Why its super difficult. Im on acoustic. Is not meant to be used for acoustic? I know its possible for acoustic but am i not supposed to do it on acoustic?
That is a gorgeous guitar. And lesson overall. And teaching skills. And patience. And recording quality. You sir have reached the maximum guitar teacher level, I don't see how it can get any better. Thank you very much
Little FYI for you Justin... In American, to F.O., or ' flick off' means to give them the middle finger ie. Flick them off. In essence telling them to 'FU$k OFF.' In the spirit of linguistic sensitivity, thought you might appreciate, if you didn't know already, this tid bit of American venacular.
🚩Sorry, The Download u are offering, Means You've Paid, correct? If not.. Really need help w/ Flick Offs( as u say.. lol) Have a sick feeling.. I need to spend money. Hope u respond. Tks
Thanks Justin. To add: if you feel a bit of pressure building on the thumb at back of neck, then pulling the elbow 'back' (pressure off thumb) from the neck helps. I believe that is a classical guitar technique.
All the “American” comments are wrong. The traffic gesture is a “Flip Off” not a Flick Off. Years of playing, a lot of it fingerstyle, and it really is a flick off. Even if one thinks they are removing their finger straight up, there always has to be a slight pluck motion to get it to sound out. Thanks Justin!
Thanks Mr.Justin. I've been watching your lessons since i noticed you on RU-vid. I'm practicing some of your lessons it really helpful. I love to practice. I would like to say big thanks for your sharing. Benjamin From Myanmar.
Hi again Justin. I'm just learning ELP, From the Beginning. This tut couldn't be more timely. Thank you I do have a question. It's not all praise. Much of the time on high e string, when I flick off with my pinky, it pulls the string off the fret board, killing the note. Any tips, besides practicing not to do it, that might facilitate getting better sustain with the pinky flick off'? While we're at it, one more question, please. There are certain presets that make softer HO's and FO's stand out more clearly without great force. Do you happen to know what FX make touch stand out more prominently, that would stay in style of an acoustic rendering of, From the Beginning? 🙏 Thank you
Hey Justin! Not here to learn about hammer ons and pull offs. Just in to tell you that your riff on Paul david's new video(the metal one with the ukulele bass) kicks asss!!!! Thanks for everything.
Holy catfish: Thanks for all these lessons. Just been to a party and half pissed, but just saw this lesson. Good work, where the f+ck do you get the energy to do these?
Thanks for watching. If ever you're searching for downloadable resources, always to to the website. They will be either under the lesson video pane or under the main module video pane (as is the case here).
