The true definition of civilisation is being able to listen to rain drumming on your tarp, or skylight, or te3nt roof, knowing that you are warm, dry and cozy.......
The rain came...ahhhh that sound on the tarp...one of natures many gifts and Elsa keeping you company in the hammock. Truly wonderful. Thank you Sandy for sharing. Happy wandering. Paul :)
some people call us mad for enjoying camping in the rain - i dont care - i like it & i know you do too, so sod em :) i dont drink the mre water either, nothing wrong with that mate. great to see you and elsa together. plce bergen, strong, cheap and well proportioned - well done soldier ;)
I've yet to camp out in the rain so now that I have the DD 3x3 i'm really looking forward to it, speaking of which I remember seeing Mike Smith 4x4 tarp and the thing is massive, very cool for inclement weather. Thanks as always for sharing your time out with us Sandy ~Peace~
I'm glad that the forecast did not let you down Sandy. I also like the sound of rain on a tarp & hope to hear it live myself at some point in the future. All the best to you & your good lady. Neil.
I love the sound of rain on the roof, Sandy. When I was growing up, we had a tin (corrugated iron) roof. Sure miss the sound of the raindrops and the thunder.
beautiful time in the woods sandy, I'm glad you got rain ..nothing like it . i did sleep in my hammock last night, but in my yard ..testing my hanging straps... take care my friend.. ..bill
Great video as normal Sandy. The picture of you resting by the tree with Elsa on your lap just calls out peace and harmony. I had this video going with the sound of rain whilst operating on 15 meters cw. What a combination! 73 de Colin
I'm about 3 months away from moving back to the UK after 10 years in Australia. Mixed emotions at the moment. Watching your video has reminded me why I'm coming back. Thanks.
Wiltshire Man I'm looking forward to a proper winter. I've had enough of 40c+ summers and endless blue skies. If you tried sleeping out in a forest here you'd have to contend with snakes, clouds of mosquitos, ticks, spiders and a dozen species of aggressive ants, some an inch long with stings at one end and pinchers at the other!
Sandy - watched all of your vids (under your different names...) and enjoyed every one. I've picked up quite a few useful things from you too along the way. So thanks very much & keep up the good work!
Still working my way through your back catalogue! Just love these simple one nighters - they capture the spirit of the mini-escape and that need we all have to reconnect with nature. All the best Sandy.
Great video sandy I have yet to sleep in a hammock I have seen your videos funky preppers and zed ' s with the hammocks they look good and you get a good night's sleep. I will have to put it on my wishlist. Atb Jam
So glad you got the rain you wanted, that's awesome! There sure is nothing quite like the sound of rain on a tarp (or tent). Dad & I had rain on the last trip out, LOVED it. Of course I do prefer to have the tent pitched before the storm, but have had to pitch in the rain twice on overnighters. It sure was a lovely view to wake up to. First of all I was wondering where Elsa would sleep, and then I wondered about having her in the hammock; but I see the answer below. Hope your wife Mandy is on the mend, and getting better. Thanks for sharing Cheers & atb ShazBoo
My son in law and i managed to get out over the weekend and it lashed it down we managed to stay dry which was the main thing. I have such a great sleep in a hammock but will try your tip on put a pillow or item of clothing under my knees. Thanks for another great video ATB
Great video Sandy, the rain is like a lullaby, I love it when I'm sleeping in my truck on over night deliveries, going to start my forest camping in the new year, haven't slept out since I was a teenager, 37 going on 38 now:-) hammock and tarp to get first and I'll pick up all the other bits a pieces as I go on, keep up the good work..
Enjoyed it Sandy, nice and relaxing... I always found tying a line between two trees and running the line through loop of the leash to let my dog have some running room to let them enjoy their time and keep them occupied while setting up and striking camp, just a tip I thought your furry children may enjoy... Have a Blessed one.
Thumbs up for the rain, Sandy! It was nice to hear the rain! Beautiful forest after the rain.. So how do you sleep with a dog in the hammock? You know, bear sleeps in my hammock, but he agrees to be my pillow (haha). Thanks for sharing your relaxing adventure. Peace, Ken
Ken, Thats cruel using bear as a pillow..Haa. Elsa uses me as a pillow. I must confess I do sleep better when she is not with me but she always knows when I am heading out. No matter how careful I am to go about the planning she knows. I even packed my kit in the car once on the evening before I went out. The next day when I opened the door she ran straight for the car and waited. She never does that normally? Sandy
Nice to see you relaxing out in the woods, Sandy. I hope Mandy's recovery doesn't hit any more snags. I did have to chuckle when you said 'back to the daily grind' as in your case it is the literal truth. Take care, Sandy, ATB. Ralf
I've spent many a night listening to the patter of rain on my tent and generally find it very pleasurable. There are exceptions, however, and ear-plugs are now part of my kit. There's an audible difference between a refreshing Summer shower and a Noahide deluge.
Good vid Sandy. Simple yet profoundly beautiful. Love it all the way from Lynchburg Virginia US. I’m one of your followers and inspired to camp because of your channel. Praying for your wife too. Thanks for taking the time. No need to respond.
I love the rain, I usually get told off by my wife for wanting to be outside watching thunder storms too! I've always wanted to live in an exposed location with a big glass fronted house so I can sit by the fire and watch the storms! Keep up the good work Sandy, great channel! :)
Nice piece with solid advice and set up. Makes me want to go out and buy a hammock and fire box! All the best to you, your wife and the sweet dog! Thanks
Loved this vid. The scene with ur little dog on lap with little fire and tarp / hammock is priceless. Cant beat hammock wild camp. Recommend changing lighter to clipper - flint wheel removable, so wen gas runs out can remove flint wheel and use to get sparks for fire. Positive healing thoughts to ur wife.
Sandy, I love your videos and the best ones of all are your solo camps. Your infectious enthusiasm for good 'ol English rain made me laugh out loud at the beginning and brought a smile to my face that lasted all the way through. You manage to show us that the simplest of life's pleasures can bring joy and contentment if we have an open mind to savour the experience. Good for you Mate - may the sweet rain, the breeze and the open air continue to refresh your spirit. God bless, Noel
Thanks Noel, We should always be happy when it rains because Ray says, "When it rains you will get wet, but don't worry because when the sun comes out you will be dry again"! I can add that skin is water proof. Haaa. Sandy
(I'd like to break the thumb of whomever did the thumbs down on this video!) Great outing Sandy--always fun to see you and your buddy out there. The clip with you sitting by the fire with Elsa in your lap is priceless!
Very nice overnight, very enjoyable watching this video, thank you sir for letting us tag along. best wishes to your lovely wife. take care of yourself. Don
Uncanny Sandy.Typed in hammock camping in the rain and your video popped up. Can't believe it but I have the same DD tarp and hammock as you. Great vid....Loved it..... Cheers.....
Hi Sandy! Nice video! I'm planning my first solo overnighter in my life. I think that your videos are inspirational and there's a lot to learn from them. Don't take notice of those negative people, who simply can't get out of they every day routine and can't enjoy the real life around them! Thanks for your videos!
Good video Sandy, thoroughly enjoyed it mate. I would have been interested to see exactly how you hang the hammock using the whoopie slings though.I lived in the USA for a while and when it rains........it rains, lol, dont know if a DD tarp would cope with it. Hope your wife is better soon, i'm back to work tomorrow after being off sick for 4 months and videos from guys like you have kept me going! Cheers, Rozza
Hi sandy nice video loved the rain hitting the tarp,I often put a rain on tarp vid on RU-vid to get me off too sleep works for me. Lovely dog. Atb Gordon
I throughly enjoyed this one.. of course I usually enjoy your videos Sandy.. ;) .. Elsa is adorable, my little Panda is about the same size, she insists on following me anywhere she can, and she sleeps in the hammock with me too.. because she thinks every big shadow is another bear, I have to pitch the tarp very low so she can't see too much LOL .. or all night long she's got her head on a swivel and I don't get any sleep! lol.. thanks for all that you do and share with us.. atb Ruth
You sound just like me. I love the rain. I get my gear together every time rain is forecast, ready to head out to the woods and then it does not rain. Just love to sit under a tarp or tent and listen to the storm.
Excellent. bit of a time delay between you publishing and me watching, but thoroughly enjoyed the vid.At the last count I had six tents. Guess who's getting a hammock for Christmas 2015?Cheers and thanks for sharing.
The rain I can enjoy but the lightning and strong winds have, lately, made it a pain in my area, I love the hammock and even have one hanging in my bedroom - it has been great for my snoring and my back!
Thank you for all you do. Take care of your wife...she is much more important than responding to all of us. Like your videos especially the ones around the Jack Lore knives.
Hi Sandy, Its truly great to be out in the rain. I was going to go out on my first solo over nighter this week but I've had one of those weeks where nothing has gone how you expect it to, so I'm looking at some time next week fingers crossed. Looks like we may have some bad weather coming in next week so I will have to pick my time as I have a four mile walk to where I intend to camp, then four miles back again, don't fancy the walk if its pooring down but its fie under the tarp. I'll let you know how it goes Atb Simon
Hi Simon, It's not nice having to set up in the rain, just make sure you have some waterproofs on whilst you do set up, then you can climb into the hammock nice and dry Sandy
Great well done video. Enjoyed the whole episode. I am sure most of us understand the priorities in life and appreciate all that you do and deal with. Take Care.
There needs to be more people making camping vids in the rain. They are so cozy and i just love the rain so much and being out in it. Without the time or money i at least get some joy out of people like this making vids. Please more rain videos!!! And love the ones that bring their dogs too!
I'm so glad it did rain for you Sandy. I can understand why you do enjoy rain. it's nice and peaceful as long as it's not accompanied with wind. I love to fish in the rain! Love your dog, seems so nice and calm. Much like my Ash who sleep with me in cold weather to keep us both warm.
Hi Steve, My little Elsa has just turned 9 years old now.She is a lovely dog and good company on my camps as is my Folding firebox. I always have it with me on Woodland camps. Sandy
There is something so peaceful about camping in the rain. I have only recently discovered your channel and videos Sandy, and id like to thank you for the enjoyment they are giving me and the knowledge I'm building about bushcraft and camping. Keep up the great work sir and keep the videos rolling,
Thanks Paul, I once met a very strange man in these woods, come to think of it ,it may have been a reflection in the moon light on the pond after all I am a Moon raker...?
Niiiice! There is a dent in the rain gutter just outside my bedroom window so the water rushes out and hit's the cement walkway when it rain's. I sleep like a log and look forward to the afternoon rain's in the summer here. I hope your recording came out like you were hoping. I saw your video of the weekend with the guys. Sure looked like you all were having fun and the resulting blades will hold the memories for years. ATB to you and yours, Louise :)
Enjoyed the sounds of the rain hitting the tent in the evening......reminds me of a night of rain I had while camping in my tent, in Sturgis, South Dakota, USA, at the 73rd Annual Sturgis Bike Rally, the largest motorcycle rally in the world they say.....that year close to 450,000 people attended, but still managed to get a good nights sleep, in the tent, in the rain, that night, at a quiet campground outside of town, called the Glenco Campground, in a shaded grassy area of trees....I enjoy watching you overnight camping adventures, of quiet peacefulness in nature...Take Care, Tim.....
Thanks Tim, The bike rally sounded fun. I always sleep well when it rains. I used to ride motorcycles from small 49cc mopeds to begin with then ended with a BMW GS1150 and many big bikes in between. Sandy
That's cool.....I have a Harley Davidson Electra Glide Classic, a 2012. One of those large full touring bikes....My Wife and I enjoy riding through the countryside, back roads, around Southern Illinois, and Missouri, here in the States where we live....Take Care, Tim.
Sir, you never need to apologize because those of us who watch your channels know that you are an extremely busy man. Family always comes first. I hope all is well...Jason
Nice one Sandy.Love that big tarp! I have the 3x3 DD and sometimes wish it was bigger. End up taking another tarp with me so we can sit under, but the pack just gets bigger and bigger.Would a drip line into your billy can work if you are not sure if positioned in the right place?? Must try that next time I am out. All the best to you and family. Cheers Mary
One man and his dog :) Always a pleasure Sandy, thankyou for sharing this. Yes, 'tis a lovely sound, the rain, especially when one is dry and snug :) Hope Mandy makes a full recovery. My good Lady treated me to a cream tea at the Pub by the Thames on Sunday the 3rd for my Birthday, I felt like a real "Toff". LOL Good Wishes......Les.
Maybe a nice tip in regard to the firewood storage for the next (few) day(s): Putting the sticks in stove byte size into a burlap sack and hang it under your tarp will dry out the wood even more if need be and keep it out of the way.
I have an ap on my phone with the sound of rain on a tent. I have bad ringing in my ears. It really helps me sleep. I enjoy your videos from Vancouver BC Canada. Thank you
Great video, I have just subscribed, thanks for taking us along with you. You have a very humble way of talking which is really relaxing. Hope things with your wife are fine. Ciao from new zealand
Best wishes to you and your wife Sandy, i guess she's passed the danger period now (even though her recovery is taking time). I've gotta have that very same Op soon, broke my ankle on a motorcycle years back, its rotten with Arthritis now and needs replacing, also have a history of blood clotting after ankle Ops, (never mind). Anyway another fine vid, thanks.
Good luck with the ankle James. If they know the history they will use anti coagulants from day 1 I guess. Many's ankle is mending now but she still needs crutches and can't walk far
