Hammock Hanging Simple and Cheap

David's Passage

In this video I show a very simple and cheap way to hang your hammock. This is the same method I have used for years now. This is a very affordable and lightweight solution for those just getting into the hammock camping world. With just a couple of heavy duty nylon webbing straps you can make your own hanging solution that will make your hammock camping setup super easy. The nice thing about this method is that the straps you end up making will most likely fit right in to your hammock bag. The straps can also be used in other ways as well. I have used these straps as improvised waist straps and well as lashing straps to tie additional gear to my pack.
Here are the straps I used in the video.
amzn.to/1zVHzBC
These straps have a tensile strength of 3,500lbs, so your hammock will break before these do.

@@ThePortlyGentleman04 ahh okay. I've 'cheated' and decided to buy straps with a carabiner. Also, with some trees being almost flat and wanting to avoid them from slipping I'm getting hooks to screw into the other side of the tree for more support and reassurance.

This video is perfect! Just what I needed! I bought a hammock and it came with plain nylon straps. I had NO KNOT knowledge and was looking everywhere online for a tutorial like this and couldn't find one. All I could find was these blog explaining how to use tree straps which have the metal loop at one end. Thanks to you Dave, I now know the basic knots to use when hanging my hammock and it's SO EASY AND LIGHTWEIGHT. Your video was very clear, simple and easy to follow. Thanks a million times!

Lifelong outdoorsy, sailor, macrame, etc etc... Just setup my first camping hammock outfit today with small budget. Had to get bearings going into this and now that I've got all the lines worked out, this is the exact way I had envisioned capturing all the elements because I've already got lots of straps. Thanks for putting this out there, not many think of this simple easy way

Perfect timing!! I just slept in my hammock for the first time. Had a clever and lucky way to tie it up and adjust it to correct length, but this method is so much better in time and not binding ribbon to knots that are hard to get undone. In order to be more length adjustable, I thought I was going to have to buy adjustable tie down straps. Your method is not only easier, cheaper, but also less weight then metal straps. THANK YOU MUCH ! ! ! ! I am new to hammock camping and on a budget. This video was perfect!

You made this 4 years ago but I think this is the most versitile of all methods I have seen. The straps are the way to go, and I currently have straps that have the loops built in. The problem I have with that is that if they are too short I have to run line connected to that, making it a two step process. I would much rather just use the straps like you have here because YOu can carry a tremendous length. I am not to worried about the weight so i wont even cut them beyond what you have when you cut them in half. Thanks .

This was very helpful and perfect timing. Went to a park yesterday excited to get some hammock time by a picturesque creek. That did not happen. Trees that were close enough together had large diameter so my suspension system that came with the hammock was too short. Now I think I can deconstruct it to a single strand and use these knots and be successful. Will give it another try. Thanks again.

I used this same method to hang my hammock a few times this summer. It worked like a charm. I used climbers webbing I purchased from REI. Rocky gave me the idea for the climber's webbing in the You Tube video she made about a year ago. I purchased two 15 ft. pieces for next to nothing compared to the price of a pair of Atlas Straps. The webbing did the job and like David said in his video, their weight is nominal at best.

Thanks David. Simple and sweet! Well explained. Just an idea that occurred to me is using seat-belt straps cut to size for a cheap alternative to buying straps. They're obviously a wider material but may help to put less impact on the trees.

I use very similar knots with a single 100 foot piece of climbing quality cordage, for lack of a better word since I don't think it's technically rope, but I find it interesting how quick and easy yours are with the straps. Everything down to the unique "locking" mechanism. I loved the video. Glad you made it for the uninitiated. Personally, I'm up to four hammocks now, lol. I like the double nest for winter but the single is fine for warmer temps. Thanks for sharing. :-)

Thanks for the video Dave. I just bought a hammock a few days ago from Wal-Mart. Seen some pretty good reviews in it, and considering I live in Florida, I figure to give it a try since I don't recommend tent camping due to snakes, gators & fire-ants. I kept backing up your video due to not knowing all the knots for hammock applications, and I been practicing with some paracord here at my desk. I'm definitely going to give them knots a try & hopefully I can get it recorded. Again, thanks for the tips & be safe. See you around. Looking forward to more videos.
