Hammond Walking Bass Blues

A quick and sloppy video to illustrate my pedal technique on a Hammond B-3. Since it has no ability to sustain pedal notes you need to do a "heel and toe" technique in order to have a full sounding bassline. Many organists play a left hand bass (and I do this when I'm using B3X), but I like to stretch out and let my left hand comp chords instead.
Recorded using a Zoom Q2N and a DJI Osmo Pocket.

Thanks. For real uptempo songs I will LH bass on the manual, but I love kicking pedals and enjoy the challenge of trying to keep legato lines as much as possible. Hammonds are the greatest.

The bass reminds me of that song where that guy plays two notes on a brass instrument at the same time.

Great sound and great playing! I really like the block chord choruses in the end!

Moritz Schippers Thank you. Just a bit of homage to my favorite player, Wild Bill Davis. He invented the organ trio and got the “Wild” nickname because he emulated a big band with his chordal style. Jake

Very laid back and "climbing" pedal style! :D - very nice, Jake, hope you all are well, - we will get through this too! - take care, and stay safe, blessings, Levi

Levi - Wow, you didn't waste any time replying....thank you for being supportive as always. Left hand bass is great for portables and single manuals, but I like to come home to using all my limbs just to see if they still can work together. We're all fine here, hope your family stays safe and well. Jake

@@Shaky_Jake you seem like a kind and humble guy, and i like your playing style on the Hammond, i dont have pedals, and have never learned them either, but its fun to watch all the different styles everyone have, yes, i was rumbling around in my email when yours came in! Later, Levi

@@nigelprettyc3 Old C-3’s are like old B-3’s - the older the better. I love B3X, but nothing can replace 425 lbs. of cabinet, the smell of 6550 power tubes glowing, and opening up the back panel for the annual oiling of the tone generator......on New Year’s Day. Gotta get the new year off to a perfect start.

Nice walking pedals. And it's so nice to see you kept your shoe on. Now, invest in a Trek II SB2500 string bass unit and you won't believe the difference. And, have it installed directly into the pedal switch. This way you can preserve the organ's 16 and 8 foot pedal tones and use them to add an un-sustained punch over the sustained string bass tones. You can still do heel and toe but it can now be played more staccato. And don't be afraid to travel above the middle octave C pedal, especially around the 4 chord. I sometimes walk it right up to the Ab and then work it back down for the 3-6 turn around. You use really nice block chords at the end too. Great job!

I’ve known Mike Smokowicz since he was a tech and I taught at the Altenberg Hammond Organ Studio in Totowa, NJ 40+ years ago. He told me that I was probably the only player that wouldn’t benefit from his String Bass unit. He’s right….. ;) I prefer no mods on any tone wheel since there are still a few house and studio organs around that I get called in to play/sub, so my technique will work on any standard rig. Thanks for the compliment.
