Hammond XK3c System using the XK3c internal Leslie simulation.
I often read from others how 'bad' the XK3c internal leslie sim is. While this may be more true of the early XK3 (non-c) version I have to disagree when it comes to the XK3c. It sounds great for a simulated leslie. You do have to get in there and edit to your own tastes however but it isn't made difficult. The 3c internal leslie can hang with most the other sims out there.
Pros of the XK3c overall:
- Modular system. Bring the full setup (XK3c/XLK3/Pedals) for organ centric shows or use just the upper manual and/or above a rhodes, wurly, other keys for others, etc The option is there, a bonus. I don't want to HAVE to bring a dual manual for some situations. This goes a long way and I wish most companies kept focus on this.
- Good sounding VASE III based organ with tons to tweak, robust routes in arranging and retaining certain setups, built in FX, very good leslie sim.
- Good build quality. You won't want to go dropping it or getting it wet but overall solid build.
- Presets can be setup to call varied setups for easy tonal switching from song to song (db, leslie, drive, verb, etc), or it can be setup like the vintage 3-series to call up only DB presets created.
- Has a good look to it, especially the full setup with either the H/S metal stand or using a faux B3 stand.
- Robust MIDI implementation from system connection to control of external devices. Last XK line to retain the pitch and mod wheels as well.
- Keybed of their own H/S design that feels good. It's not like that of the vintage rigs but not a far cry either. Far better build than the the typical Fatar keybeds.
- Can be found used in good condition and at a sane price while definitely filling most needs
Cons:
- It's a dated VASE system, limited in scope of organ choice type, condition, and era. There are essentially only two 3-series organ options to work with/tweak.
- The out of box default tone is pretty terrible and you'll want to get to editing right away. I would say the percussion is it's weakest aspect, a bit of digital harshness. Some don't like it's c/v as well.
- Portable but still pretty heavy in lieu of build. Weight can be a real factor for some.
- H/S accessories still over-priced for what they really are but they aren't alone. See also: Viscount, Nord, etc. It's a niche market, I get that. Even so, very few could convince me ANY of the digital clones should be priced more than the cost of the vintage they're (still) trying to emulate today.
