Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. From being a virtually unknown and decrepit site since the collapse of the Vijayanagara kingdom in the 16th century, it got a new lease of life thanks to colonial archaeologists and subsequently, a hydropower project that came to fruition in the 1960s. Once a popular spot for European hippies, Hampi has now grown to be a venerable hub of tourism for both domestic and foreign visitors. Nearly 1,600 surviving monuments from a bygone golden era mark the last great Hindu kingdom in South India.
