There is a cave up near that butte that you have to crawl into, but once inside it's about the size of a small garage where you can stand up and easily walk around. Found tightly woven bark 'blankets' and wooden spatula-looking tools ALL left in place. It's probably really old stuff from when the pioneers settled into Oregon. Cool video on rocks..!!
I am born and raised in Oregon. We spent lots of weekends as a family looking for petrified wood in central oregon (Prineville). This vid brought back some very fond memories. Thanks!
i am not into shooting much any moer due to P.T.S.D now plants and rocks that is a whole diffrent tale ! never dreamed i would see GREEN PETRIFIED WOOD! it looks like it would make a great summer trip to go and explore OREGON and WASHINGTON! just subscribed!!!
Wow, those were some cool finds. I used to go to Church with a guy who was a rock hound. He had some cool stuff. I used to find a lot of arrowheads and some six sided crystals when I was in the clearing and grading business. Thanks for posting this. Very cool👍🏻
Blue green rock is just surprisingly beautiful. I wish I can find the same kind one day..Thank you for uploading. I thought that music was really matching video too.
Thanks for sharing I have more inspiration & motivation to get back out there & rockhound because people like you see the beauty in the world others may not! Thanks!!😃
Wow! What a chunk. I've been to glass butte a week ago. Going back first of the month. I have to look around this place now too! Ha ha ha ha ha ha. So much fun.
Thanks for the video. Went to Glass Butte and then this one. Glass had some snow, top 4" of soil was mushy but I could pick out rocks. Hampton was hard frozen (12 Apr 2023) and a fair bit of snow on the ground; too hard to dig or even pick frozen rocks from the surface. Off-season until May for county road crew, main gravel road was in good shape, 12 Mile was rutted.
This was a very cool find. Thank you for sharing. If I were to plan a trip to the same place, are there permits needed to look for the petrified wood? Do you do any guiding?
No permits needed. I do not do any guiding. It's a pretty easy dive out there. Even a passenger car could make it. You don't need a 4x4. The digging is pretty easy too. You only need to dig down about no more than 2 feet to find good material. I like to just hop into an existing pit with my rock hammer using the pick side of it and dig away!
Bring lots of water because that volcanic soil sticks to everything. No need for a truck to get back in that area. You can plan on moving a lot of material .... mostly rock stacked up on other rocks not to mention shallow roots (bring a ax). The best short cut is to use a tile probe and know the different sounds of diff. material. You will see some areas that look like bomb ranges.
So that last one was a cut peace of stump right..? It was smooth on both sides practically polished already, like a saw cut no? Petrified pretty quick. How do you know where to dig.. or do you just start somewhere?
@@therockpile6734 wood, but not the point. Limb casts are full branches, petrified wood is more generally shapeless, and usually more Jasper and agate mix. Limb casts are a completely different thing then just petrified wood.
@@ghosttownguy7472 I actually watched your video and did some research on it. I have similar stuff here in the Willamette valley. Matter of fact, I just put some in Iron out to see how they clean up. My most recent video shows some of my specimens.
Sure. The area we were at is a designated rock collection area. There is a lot of private property around so you have to watch where you dig but it is all pretty well posted with signs and fences.
