A new short series on the basics of hamster care, today we start with talking about cages! For more information on hamster cages ie the different types, minimums, how to measure your cage etc watch his video: • Lets Talk About Hamste...
Good point on the ventilation. I was a little worried about it when I first moved my hamster into his new cage, and when I heard him wheezing a little I thought it was a lack of ventilation. It turned out Jack didn't do great on carefresh - the dust was what made him wheeze. Once I switched him to non-dusty paper bedding, he's been fine. (And I sneeze less too!) The ventilation in his enclosure is absolutely fine.
Great short! The bedding depth is extremely important and a lot of people don't know about it. According to a study I read 40cm/~15 inches of bedding drastically decreases stress behaviour in hamsters. So if you have a big cage but your hamster is still not happy make sure you have enough bedding and that it holds burrows!
4 years ago while in fifth grade I wanted a hamster so bad I did lots of research and I found your channel to be helpful and entertaining to watch I’m happy to say that my hamster is still alive and quite happy I’m glad I wasn’t another little kid with a unhappy aggressive hamster thank you!
seeing the mystery shack after finding out the hamsters name is dipper made me so incredibly happy :) also I'm deffos not someone doing research looking for a pet, but seeing these lil dudes all happy in their homes makes me so happy, thank u for sharing :)
Your videos have helped me so much with hamster care! When I got my first hamster 3 years ago I really didn’t know much about proper care and had gotten my first hamster from petsmart. Thanks to your helpful videos I now know so much more about proper hamster care and am able to give my hammy’s the best life possible.
@@VictoriaRaecheli really need help. my hamster bites her bars even though we have a big cage size. is it the fact we don’t have a wheel yet or is it because her bedding is possibly too shallow or is it something else?
Wish I would’ve known or my parents would’ve known more about these little guys before buying them for me. It breaks my heart how we all are so misunderstanding of animals and STILL get them. Thank you for teaching people about how to treat these little guys the right way❤️
i love ur vids sm - I have been a huge fan for 4 years and u have helped me improve my hamster care so much! I never thought I would see the day when u would make shorts, but here we are! - I’m not complaining, I love it!!! Thanks again Victoria ! ❤
Another cage option out there for hamsters are (large)rabbit cages! We found some 62x30 (x35 inches tall) cages on sale for Guinea pigs, and put mesh wire around it. The base is about 8 inches, but plexiglass can be used to increase it! There is a platform on ours specifically which you can put bedding under, plus have some stuff on top to keep it from getting bedding in/on it such as the wheel, water bowl, food bowl, etc! You can choose to not use the level as well!(we have bedding all the way up to the level so it is still “floor space” but without bedding actually on top of it❤ Just make sure you secure everything and add wire mesh to the bars so your hammy doesn’t escape or get caught in the bars!
I used to have a cage. It was one of those bar ones it was really small my hamster kept monkey bars and kept chewing on the wires so we looked up what hamsters need by the way this is my cousin’s hamster she didn’t want anymore and it came in this cage so we looked it up and we found out that the hamsters need bigger cage so we got a 10 gallon tank but then I realized after I started watching you that I needed a 40 gallon tank so now I’m getting a 40 gallon tank Thank you for this is really helpful Love your videos. ❤️🫶🏻
I used to use a bar hamster cage which was so small my hamster bit the bar and climb on the bar and always run around After I got a new wooden cage which was a lot bigger she didn’t run around anymore Just run around in normal situations
The big issue with glass cahes is that they can heat up causing the hamsters stress and even death. Juat keep them away from direct sun and heat sources
Tysm to your videos I made the bin cage for my hamster and made all my toys for him and was sooooo cheap he has plenty of shavings now so Tysm to you my hamster is living a better life without you he would still be in a critter trial
I made the mistake of buying a long enough tank but not high enough. I still put decent amount of bedding in but the wheel keeps hitting the top of the tank
I have two hamsters named Maple and Pearl maple is 9 months old and Pearl is months old Maples cage is 738 sq inches Pearls is 621 it will be up graded very soon they both have bin cages Maple use to be in a tiny tales cage for the first month I had her and then she went to a KTEE cage 540 and now she is in a bin cage and both of them are very sweet I tamed them like you did with Waddles sorry if I did not spell his name right I'm only 10 thanks for teaching people about great hamster care.
I'm really sad for my hamster. My mom just bought a hamster for 3 weeks and the cage is just 60 × 50 and the cage is not really natural but I think my mom doesn't wanna spend too much money for a hamster. I really feel bad for him..and I don't think I put enough bedding for him:(. Should I let him cause I really feel bad for him😢
Hii Victoria, amazing video and I love your videos a as always! I like that you are doing RU-vid shorts now. However, I’ve got a small question my Syrian use to be very tamed and he use to love getting picked up and now he hates it, does this mean he may be ill. He lives in the Pawhut so it can’t be a stress behaviour, right? Please help!😅 I’m very sorry if I’m being a bit annoying because you probably always get comment like this. Victoria never fails to make amazing videos as always!!!❤🥹 You inspire me to be the best hamster owner I possibly can to my hamsters 🐹🐹😊
This is great advice! I was just curious if you had any advice if you couldn’t afford a bigger aquarium cage? I want to give my hamster something he’ll actually enjoy, but I’m not able to purchase something like that
Hi! I have a question! I am going on vacation soon, and I am planning on picking up my hamster on the way back home. The hamster would be in the car for about 3 hours. Would that be okay?
I have a large cage with a big amount of floor space and the base is relatively deep, especially for a cage with bars and she’s able to burrow. But would people advise against having a cage with bars altogether?
I have a tiny hamster I it blue and have 3 keavals she never dies thes 3 things she has a plsce to borrow and a whell a place to sand bath and more ahe can go out if she wonts but she our luna likes her house lol so hope its okei ✌
Hello Victoria! I love your videos they helped me with my hamster care and I would love to improve. I just want to know what type of gallon I should get. A 40 gallon or ?
So I have 1 hamster initially gifted by my bf so I had to get a cage as soon as I got my hamster & I found one on offer up but the thing is, they never mentioned a hamster because its illegal to sell animals on there & they never mentioned it when I got it. They said it came with hamster supplies & thats how I found out, it was sleeping in its hideout. It got out when I looked how I was gonna carry the cage up the stairs into my apartment. I had to get another cage for it this time at the nearest pet shop 😭 my question is , why does it smell so bad? The one my bf got me barely had any smell even when it peed but the one I got on offer up smelled especially when it peed. I gave them the same diet, but it still smells & the smell is almost like a strong pee + teriyaki scent.
Yes i have 40x20 and my hamster is getting big for a fancy hamster and It's getting bigger for the cage so I've been looking Nad seeing 80x50cm for can but I dunno 😅
I don't know if its because he is stressed, but he always climbs up the bars to get up to the platform, altough we have like a ramp that he can use to get up, is it normal?
Ok so my hamster had a small cage probably the size of idk a new born baby that could only fit a small purple igloo house and a wheel in it. So I got her a cage that’s a large plastic container and she still climbs on the bars and chews on them is there anything that I can do to get her to stop bc I don’t want her to hurt her self
I would love to have an 800 square inch cage but sadly I don’t have space for that. I was able to barely fit a 500 square inch cage for my robo hamster. She seems to be doing well though so I think she is okay. If you have any tips for fitting a larger enclosure in a small space please let me know I would love to expand my hamster cage if I can
Hard to tell without knowing what the space looks like but (assuming it won't be knocked over and earthquakes aren't a thing there) you could put it on a large thing with drawers/rack underneath to store stuff Should be fine if 8cm+ bedding works
This is very helpful! I always wanted a hamster but petstores always make sure that you mess up and kill your pet in atrocious way. For example I am in the fish hobby and they lie a lot about the number of fish needed in a school, water parameters and tank size. Hamsters just like fish are the most abused pet in the world because how much misinformation is spread about them. We really need that kind of video to spread.
I have a question for you - I have a 5 month old male Syrian, and around twice a month he bites the wire on the top of his cage - his cage is over 800sq inches, and has a large wheel, lots of stimulation, hideouts, etc; I’m not sure why this is, but I’m guessing it’s his hormones? If you could reply to this comment or make a video about it, that would be so helpful! Tysm! ❤
It could be a matter of just needing a larger enclosure :) I talk more about this in this video when Dipper was not happy in his 900 Sq inch enclosure: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DnOwU-g1DzA.html
I wanna buy all the hamsters from the pet store and take good care of them but first my mom won’t let me cause I can’t have like 20 hamsters and second I would just be giving them a whole bunch of money to keep selling those cages :/
Hi is 40 by 16 ok? Patches cage is absolutely full with enrichment and has all the necessities he has never shown any boredom signs and seems to be a very happy hamster !❤
I really need to get my hamster a aquarium cuz he has been rlly stressed these days and he doesn't have space to burrow and do other stuff and he looks very sad and the thing is I can't afford a aquarium..😢
If you live in the US look out for Petco's Aquarium sales, often they'll have them for 50% off which is a great deal! You can also look on buy/sell websites or facebook market place for used tanks being sold!
@@TheLifeOfDogsJust so you know Savic recently came out with a larger size of the hamster plaza that is now 118x64 cm large, I think that’d be a great size for a Syrian if you still want a barred cage :)
My hamster doesn't make borrows, even though he's provided with enough bedding. I guess that's better so he doesn't pee down there, that must be so annoying to clean
Aquariums for hamsters are a bit dangerous too, because Aquarium is very big and it takes so much money to buy that many Scobs and on Aquariums three is more Chance to get hamster sick because there can be bacterias on aquarium
You can always get a 50 gallon storage bin from a target or a hardware store. They’re very cheap and it’s easy to make a diy lid for them. Victoria actually has both a diy mesh lid tutorial and a hamster on a budget video if you’re interested.
No they aren’t, as long as it’s big enough. However, I haven’t found any barred cages that my hamsters have liked. They really just don’t provide nearly enough room for good bedding depth, and all my hamsters loved to burrow.
It may work for some but many seem to end up unhappy in them! So I’d say to look into something else especially since it’s gone WAY up in price, it’s not really worth it anymore.
@@ianthompson8607I like the prolee hamster cage (at least 40 inches) but if you don’t have that much money, you can always go diy 2x4x2 or a 50 gallon bin cage. Hope this helps!
Hamsters are always small in my experience unless of course you have the giant black and white Chinese Hamster, eats a lot bamboo shoots and are for some reason misidentified as Pandas??? by ignorant people who refuse to believe the existence of such an animal, but it doesn't change the fact that they are Hamsters. Tune in next week for more amazing Hamster facts😊 🐹🐒🐝
I have an aquarium, which I suddenly don't need and can use for my dwarf hamster. But I think it might be a bit too small, even if it is 100cmx40cm. If I've done the math right.
For a dwarf hamster I’d say 600 square inches (or 4,000 sq cm) is big enough. Since Syrian hamster things are bigger they naturally need bigger cages to fit everything in. Hope this helps!
@@cloudyskyz2237 So then, it goes (if I've calculated correctly) about right. So then it will be fine until I have the right cage for Scream. (she's a screamer and a biter 😅 ) And I'm trying to build a cage for her, but it's not easy when you struggle with deperation.
I’m so sorry to all the hamsters I unwittingly killed because of lack of research. I wasn’t ready for one and I failed them by overlooking their needs 🥺
If you make this video out of context its sounds like : How to care for an hamster: put it in an aquarium. ?? 😂 Tho I wouldn't recommend an actual tank bc how much they cost. Honestly to me it doesn't sound hard to diy
@@VictoriaRaechel Thank you so much! I'm hoping it will be big enough for a dwarf. Also thanks for being such a great influence and spreading amazing information! It has definitely impacted people and their little animals!
@@ashecosplays7057for a dwarf I think 700 is ok. Since their things aren’t as big as Syrian things, they don’t take up as much space, leaving more space for the hamster.
