Educational video describing sprain or tear of the proximal hamstrings.
The hamstrings are a group of muscles located on the back of the thigh.
Muscles of the hamstrings are:
•Biceps femoris (long head and short head)
•Semitendinosus.
•Semimembranosus.
The proximal end of the hamstring muscles originates from the ischial tuberosity in the rear pelvis.
The muscles of the hamstring are all innervated by the sciatic nerve. The hamstring muscles are the major flexors of the knee and also aid in hip extension.
Injuries to the hamstring muscles occur proximally and are a common source of chronic pain and injury in athletes. It is often referred to as hurdler’s injury. Athletes who attempt to clear hurdles are prone to injury due to excessive hamstring tension.
Hamstring strains are classified into three grades:
•Minor tears within the muscle
•Partial tear within the muscle
•Complete muscle tear
Most hamstring injuries in adults occur at the musculocutaneous junction but injury may also occur at the insertion into the ischial tuberosity.
Severe hamstring injuries where the tendon tears away from a fragment of bone are called avulsion injuries. Avulsion injuries are not common and typically occur in patients who are young, skeletally immature athletes.
Patient will complain of sharp pain in the back of the thigh with popping or tearing of the muscle. There may be ecchymosis of the posterior thigh with a palpable mass in middle of the thigh.
Hamstring injuries are usually diagnosed by MRI.
In case of strained or pulled hamstring can occur due to insufficient warm up time before activity. Treatment includes rest, ice, compression bandage, elevation and physiotherapy. In case of avulsion injury. Surgery is done in complete avulsion injuries with muscle retraction. Usually done early. Make the incision, find the retracted muscle and protect the nerve. Use anchors in the ischium to repair the tendon to the tuberosity. In case of bony avulsion, screw may be used in severe cases.

By far, the best explanation on RU-vid! But I hope you've fixed your incorrect mistake of transposing the wrong muscle in one sentence. Otherwise, your video SHOWED my Ortho exactly what was wrong with me and proved my own diagnosis as correct! The doctor wanted to do SPINAL SURGERY! I had to fight with your video to CORRECT MY DOCTOR! Needless to say, I fired her and went elsewhere, thanks to you!❤️

I had to stop playing football when I was 25 because of pain where the hamstring attaches to the pelvis. I'm 39 now and tried to make many comebacks at different stages but pain would gradually get worse and worse over the weeks and months I would walk with a limp. Even now I would not be able to play football at for a period of 2 months without the injury recurring. If you feel this injury stop your activity immediately and rest it for a year or 2 years if you have to. It's a career ender I learned the hard way

@@scrypt1x126 I'm not a doctor. But I do wish I explored the option of getting it operated on when it happened first because football was my life and it was so hard having to give it up. No physio ever did any good to the injury and I spent lots of time and money on them. My advice is if you want to continue sport look into getting surgery. But if you are just looking to stay fit then listen to your hamstring. Rest for months if you need to. Walk if you can and build up slowly to jogging if you can. Do not over stretch it ever and stay off the bike because it makes it very painful very fast. It's a horrible injury and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy

Hi, I pulled my hamstring during a cricket game a week ago. I do not see any bruise or scar behind my thighs. I feel niggling pain at the middle of my back thigh while walking. to treat this , I apply ice and have stopped doing any lower body exercise. After a week, the pain has reduced considerably. Can I start doing some strengthening exercises (Front Squats, stretching, etc) now? Also, how long before I should start getting involved actively in sporting activities?

A few days later I ran again, and I felt a lightning bolt of pain in the same area. I had a 2nd degree tear in my left hamstring, which means it’s partially torn. I’m not an expert or anything, but I think you would have the same type of tear as me.

I did reactivate it temporarily I think while doing leg exercises for another onjury....but isolating the glutes in workouts for 2 weeks resolved it God willing. I get this weird sensation when I keep my left glute stretched out and in a certain position. And I feel sensitive lifting things or doing workouts in a hamstring dependent manner. But these are honestly minor inconsistencies. I should probably add that I injured mine thru track but kept playing basketball 3 months after it occurred before i stopped and eventually got treatment. So i mightve made it much worse. So yea thats that. I would say im pretty much recovered now and unless his is much worse than mine, therapy is doable. Consider the risks of surgery too please. But if you are walking ok it could be a bad tear? Was there lots of bruising? Also if its ok to touch now try and have some sports massage on the area.

I had a 3cm 2nd degree tear about 6 months ago, which means it tore with the muscle still attached. I was on my crutches for 1-2 months. I had slow recovery, as I was born with tight hamstrings and hypermobility. It started out with severe cramping in my upper thigh, while I was running, or even standing. When I got home from running, I couldn’t even walk. The next few days, I was running at a race, I felt a lighting bolt of pain, and I felt unconscious and almost fainted. I’m still recovering sadly, (Sorry if I haven’t worded it out right I’m only 11)

I have a recurring issue of my bicep femoris popping back and forth during a deep squat as I pass 90 degrees. its usually provoked from deadlifts lunges or deep Leg presses or Squats... and then I will experience the popping for a few weeks everytime i go past 90. the more its provoked the greater the popping sensation and the easier it is to be provoked further (it can pop perhaps before reaching 90 degrees) i was thinking its popping hamstring syndrome but im not experiencing any pain?!! is there any advice you can give me? any tightness perhaps that can be solved with stretching?

While on a motorcycle ride I noticed severe cramping in the back of my thigh. I stopped to stretch and consider calling it a day. Without any warning I have a lightning bolt of pain in the same back area of the thigh. I lost my balance and the bike fell on the charley horse thigh. 1 month later it have been determined that I have 2 of 3 hamstrings have been torn from the bone. The 3rd is torn by hanging on. Are my motorcycle days behind me?

I had the same sort of experience. I felt horrible cramping at the back of my thigh, while running. I had growing pains and was born with tight hamstrings and hyper mobility. I was running again at a race, and then I felt HORRIBLE pain in the same place. I had very painful spasms, and if me, or if someone moved it the slightest bit I would scream. The nurse thought I popped my hip. I went to take an X-ray but nothing was there. The few days, I was having physio, then my thigh hurt, I was sent to take an ultrasound and I had a 2nd degree 30mm tear on my hamstring that goes backwards. I am only 11 and that was about 6 months ago. I’m still recovering, I can walk but run with a limp. I can participate in most activities at school, but not all of them. (Sorry if I haven’t worded it that well)

Anyone can help to tell if I have a hamstring injury, so I was stretching my left leg and suddenly felt a "ping" feeling at my hamstrings area around my upper thigh, it felt like a guitar string had broken, is that what it is suppose to feel like? Its not very painful just tender and would hurt a little if I try to stretch that area

I'm no doctor but that sounds exactly like a hamstring pulling.

Hey are you feeling the same pain now or is it cured now? Actually I also feel the pain in my hamstrings around my upper thigh while doing stretching
@joesr31
@joesr31 2 года назад
@@payeldeka3056 its not resolved yet, I find that regular stretch helps a little, but the problem resumes once I stop stretching for around a week or 2. I stretch everyday now to stop the pain. If you found a better solution do tell me

If anyone can help me then that'd be great. So I do gymnastics and over the summer I stretched at home (2 times a day). So maybe near July, I started to get this pain on my left butt cheek and I still have it to this day. The hamstring muscle I believe is definitely pulled.. And I'm really scared.. I've did some pyhsiotherapy and showed me a few stretches but Didnt help. Whenever I learn on my left butt area, it starts to pain really bad..

It's likely caused by your low-back, you should visit your local doctor or physiotherapist

javier cruz I feel better now, I still have to do rehab, but I have a condition called hypermobility which slows my recovery down. My other hamstring is getting tight because I have been using it too much. I’ve had the injury for about 6 months.
