His wife had to help him to bed, where she only managed to take of his tie. He had given his wallet and his prize diploma to a servant at the party, and told him he could take whatever he wanted. The servant gave it to the wife. Hamsun woke up the next morning, bewildered and confused, saying: "But what is this, have I slept all night without my tie on?"
