Funny that i dont remember the violence but the silences, the beauty and the music of Joe Hisaishi

Takeshi Kitano always plays the same guy - I love all of them

The trailer shows 80% of the violence and 10% of the beauty of the film.

Sadly, you're right.

The violence in Kitano's film is the beauty. The unrelenting violence of Kitano's character in Hana-bi is what propels the story, and it is why all his protagonists exist in the first place. Everything stems from his violence.

and I had to be pause about half way though because I'm sure it was about to give away 100% of the plot. I saw it on release, and wanted to refresh my memory, not recap the whole movie. Must find time to watch it soon.

@@andrewjacob6487 Do you really think so? Begbie in Trainspotting is a character who is motivated by violence, Takeshi's character, I felt, always used violence as a means to an end.

I think it shows less than 10% of the beauty

An absolute masterpiece. He is fast becoming a worthy successor to Kurosawa, whilst still maintaining his own style.

This has very little to do with Kurosawa, and Kitano has not even made many other films of this kind since Hana-Bi nor does he seem very interested in ‘serious cinema’, so I really don’t know what you mean

I like most kitano's movies and this one is the best. His biggest theme "self-destruction" has reached its best in this film.

Joe Hisaishi must love that ostinato pattern. Not only does it comprise the theme for Sonatine but it can be heard faintly in Spirited Away of all films!

I don't believe Kayoko Kishimoto says one word in the movie but you feel so much for her.

If I remember correctly, she has one line of dialogue right at the end: "Thank you.... Thank you for everything."
@Koscina51

@@enso7890 I do believe you're right. In another movie, Himitsu (1999), she also says "Thank you" to her husband before she dies. That was also a tearjerker.

@@Koscina51 I'm pretty sure I'm right. Even though it's been years since I watched Hana-bi, the ending scene will be forever etched in my memory. So powerful, so moving.

EXCELLENTLY remastered in HD, I might add! I saw this on original release and the BD gives the cinema a real run for its money. Highly recommended.

If you ever have trouble sleeping, try watching Hana-Bi, it's just pretentious wank. You'll feel your life ebb away second by second.
