I practise and practise with my hand bearing compass. I take take bearings off widely-spaced features, then draw the bearing lines on the chart, by sliding the straight-edge so that it remains parallel with the bearing as shown on the magnetic compass rose nearest my position. After lots of practice, I can turn on the GPS, then by using the hand bearing compass, I can fix my position on the chart before the GPS has the time to warm up and show the position on its display. This really is a very important piece of equipment. I guess the most important items to have for coastal navigation is the chart, the hand bearing compass, and the depth sounder.

Snap! Same as. GPS function is not a given. As you know it can be switched off or encoded in "special times". If you get a lightning strike, things will all go wobbly. It is then, your want to be using old school dead reckoning and a decent hand bearing compass. With a chart and a depth sounder or lead line. Good advice guys too much reliance on IT and electronics these days. How many can read the sea state, waves and clouds these days? Its basics but you would be surprised. Be good to see some videos on old school navigation we have yet to see someone do the basics well. Sail Safe guys. See you in the Med soon. Ant, Cid & the Pooch crew.

Hi. I took a bearing on the bow of the tanker and it looks like it is going to pass to the right of me. But the stern is going to pass to the left of me. Please advise. The ship is getting much bigger by the minute!

Second everything you said, whilst AIS is great this can be much easier to use on deck to check for collisions. Andy UK
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 года назад
Absolutely Andy, when you are wondering whether you are on a collision course or not that feels like a very strange moment to be going down below! Cheers, Chris 👍
@duncanforrester6126
@duncanforrester6126 4 года назад
Not disagreeing Chris, but if you need to go down below for AIS, you really should think about installing a NMEA->Wifi link, so you have it to hand on your phone.

Hi mate great work The hand bearing compass is your best friend I agree entirely Generation gps is all good until it don’t power up, hand bearing compass with a hand grip with locking rings are great because if you’re a blind guy you can aim, lock and read it later downstairs at the table at leisure but I like your compass for good eyes people it’s great will last forever Great video mate

Great info as always Chris. A small but important point is that the Iris 50 comes in two models balanced for different zones. Zone A-B : North Hemisphere, South Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Central Pacific, Tahiti, and Reunion Island. Zone C : South Pacific, Central & South Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia.

..... a great tool ... the thing I'm surprised one does not see being used for practice, one hears about the fear of being struck by lightning, but not sextant practice and plotting and crosschecking with the chart plotter .... just an observation ..... hey Great informative video Chris .... have fun be safe, save our oceans ......
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 года назад
Thank you Peter. Yes lightning can frazzle electronics. An oven can serve as a Faraday cage to protect electronics in a storm but it's not really practical to put everything in the oven every time dark clouds appear, so yes it is always nice to have backups. Cheers, Chris 👍

HBC is one of my personal ‘holy trinity’ when on deck. Other 2 are knife and small telescope. YMI and delivery skipper.

Great call, very useful items indeed. On our last boat we had 2 x stainless steel knives held in place with bungee - one at the bow, one at the stern and during my solo channel crossing I had a knife in my jacket pocket at all times. Bino’s can definitely be a godsend too. Thanks for sharing your experience and fair winds! Chris 👍

Be careful of ‘Spectacle Deviation’ when using a hand bearing compass. The metal in some glasses can give deviation of bearing.

That makes sense, it doesn't take much to throw a compass. Going near a boat's main compass with a screwdriver is a good way to demonstrate this. Cheers, Chris 👍
