Every step in the process of carving an Ivy Leaf pendant in Oak wood, using one of the Pendant Carving kits available on my website at www.gilesnewma...
Be warned, this is a looooong video and there’s no talking, just carving. Skip through to find the parts you need or are interested in!
If there’s enough interest I’ll film a full tutorial video explaining all of the techniques I use on this piece. Let me know in the comments if you would like to see this.

Enjoyed this immensely and instantly learned some new techniques - even if I was screaming "OMG HIS THUMB" the entire time. So uh, mixture of beauty and horror.

This is the bees knees, the camera angle almost makes it feel like the viewer is the one carving. Sort of like a woodcarvers virtual reality dream come true where you automatically and artificially become a master.

That brought a little tear to my eye. It's just so beautiful. It's like the whole tree is imprinted on this little leaf. Thank you so much for sharing your artistic process. It's inspiring.

You'd save a lot of time and energy if you used a coping saw to take off all that extra wood. But wow - I went onto your web page... Your work is MAGICAL! Here in South Africa the Rand is more than R20 to the Pound. So I do a rough multiplication and my jaw drops...

I'm guessing the sandpaper is for people who aren't good at carving? That shape almost looks like the fox head I've seen around, can you provide that instead?
@gilesnewman8555
@gilesnewman8555 4 года назад
Haha.. sandpaper has its uses beyond fixing mistakes. I often use a sandpaper finish to create contrast with knife finishes... it works well to differentiate adjoining areas that in real life are in contrasting colours.

Great video, thank you. Are you naturally ambidextrous, or did you teach yourself to use both hands?

Thank you. Yes, I’m naturally ambidextrous though I’ve always preferred writing and drawing with my left.

Giles this is fantastic. I know these videos take a tremendous amount of effort (and it can't be easy to carve while keeping in frame!) Would you consider re- releasing your Raventhorne video with normal speed?
@gilesnewman8555
@gilesnewman8555 4 года назад
Thank you so much. Filming and carving at the same time is certainly difficult but I hope the videos are useful. Unfortunately I filmed the Raventhorn project mostly in time lapse so there isn’t a real time version available as I would gladly share it if it were possible.

Very nice video. No distracting music. Only the sound of birds and the carving of wood. Very peaceful and calming. Also nice that you use fallen wood and respect the forest. I never carved anything, but am thinking about starting. Am a bit nervous about "messing up" the wood though. I guess I will start by looking for branches. Without harming nature of course. Safe carving!

Hi Giles, this is beautiful work. I love following you on Instagram. I have a similar knive to yours but I struggle with carving relief into a piece (let's say I had a disc of wood, just a slice of branch and I was trying to make it the face of a barn owl. Bringing out its features is really tough.) Do you have any advice? Also, do you have any resources for identifying fallen wood? I rarely know what it is I pick up on my walks.

THANK YOU for this video. I learned so much from watching this, I would love to see more. Sometimes less is more when it comes to educational content and being able to just take in exactly what you're doing made this extremely informative. Again, thank you for your content, I love your work.
