At last. Someone has finally explained how to cut...to the line, in the line and so on. Marking the second cut with a knife and then cutting on one side of the line. Thank you, thank you, thank you Jay. I now feel confident enough to give it a try. Cheers
That seemed to be one of the most, if not the most, talkative (or informative) I've ever seen you in your vids, lol. Lawd knows iAppreciate a thorough explanation, guiding/walking us through the thought processes. Love it! Keep up the great work Jay, & thank you for sharing. Aloha :-)
Dude! you went from being "the pocket hole" guy to being the "cleanest dovetail demonstrator" guy in one video! I'm sure all of your long time subscribers would agree that it has been a pleasure following your growth and progression over the years.
"Don't need it to be complicated" you say then you do dovetails? Well it is a hand tool tote so what is more appropriate right! Very nicely done dovetails Jay! Glad to see you doing some hand tool work because you're good at it!
I am impressed by your growing skills. You started with a table saw and some plywood but you've reached so far into the most difficult part of woodworking, the hand tools and precision furnitures. This is a great piece of furniture. But the again I am not impressed, I knew it from the beginning, when I first saw your channel that you can do a lot of stuff. Excellent work Jay.
Hey folks! There's a lot of repeat questions for this project so I'll shoot a follow up video answering the questions on my second channel in a day or two. Subscribe over there if you are interested in that video: ru-vid.com
I look forward to it. would you mind doing a bit about the tools? different saws, why you like them and benefits detracting of each, things that you are trying out like the magnet you showed( really cool by the way), some of your other hand tools and planes. you have tons of cool projects but don't talk about the tools much. and both of those are interesting.
Love to see you take the risk of demonstrating precision hand tool work as well as using non-traditional techniques to cut the dovetails. Excellent craftsmanship. Thanks for sharing!
Came across this while looking for some sort of tote or caddy to keep my hand tools half-ways organized on top of the bench. Looks like a perfect solution!
Bro!! That turned out great. You always explain your methods and the reasoning behind it. You give details that many others skip. Like, cleaning up the cut dovetails... only go halfway so you don’t blow out the other side. That’s awesome. Thanks
Absolutely brilliant craftsmanship Jay! I always encourage people to find the tool or tools that work best for them rather than follow others blindly. Glad to see you getting good results with the saw guide and Eastern style saw. The brass handles and shellac really makes the tote into a beautiful display of your ability. JOB WELL DONE!
great project, and great finished product. love the dramatic music at the end. "in a world, where a man needs to carry hand tools, there is ... the hand tool tote".
Thanks for de-mystefying the dovetails. You honestly made it look & seem pretty simple. And I was glad to see you mention that DT 8 degree guide. That thing looks like it helps quite a bit. I'll definitely have to order one of those.
I can only say one thing --- WOW !!!! I've only watched this video and the 3 about the workbench, but i plan on watching the rest. you are an excellent craftsman with a good way of showing how you build. GREAT JOB and KEEP IT UP.....
One of your best videos to day Jay. Can you imagine building an entire dresser or kitchen cabinets by hand? I will say that this is something pretty cool to master, plus those jig kits are really expensive. Thanks for sharing and be safe.
Watched my Grandfather restore and refinish furniture. He would rebuild parts with hand tools. I was to dumb to realize then I should be spending more time with him. I may have been a wood worker instead of a Cop. Your work is amazing young man. One day I hope to meet the people I see on here, I have more days behind me then ahead of me so I need to get to work on the bucket list.
I'm moving from a garage shop to a tiny apartment balcony, which has me finally getting around to learning more hand tool work. Your explanation of how to make hand cut dovetails is very informative and non-intimidating! Out of the 20+ different how-to videos I've watched recently, I'll probably refer back to yours and Paul Sellers' when I go to cut my own.
I don't want to come off as offensive with this comment but Ive always looked at you as the regular guy kind of woodworker on RU-vid so I love that you tackled this as it has been something I've wanted to try but was always some intimidated, now I feel confident to give it a go thanks
This might be an older video of yours but of all the dovetail videos I've watched this was the only one that made me undererstand how to use dividers and having a half pin out in space. Thank you.
Dovetails made easy by Jay Bates! Thanks for the video, great explanation and execution. It's hard to pick a favorite but this one is at the top of my list. That's a deep rabbit hole you pushed me into ;)
Inspirational woodworking. It's amazing to see what you are doing now. I haven't embraced much hand work in my projects yet and you are making me want to go our and acquire some new tools.
Jay Nice job on your tool tote. I use the David Barron dovetail guide also. Dovetails are cool I enjoy the entire process but get the greatest kick when I plane the assembled joint and they come up seamless without any gaps then when finish is applied and they pop.
Jay that turned out beautifully. I have always been intimidated by hand cut dovetails but may now have a go in future. It is fascinating to see how your channel is developing as you show us the range of the skills you have developed.
One of the better examples of using calipers ot layout dovetails. Most people skip the "this is the tails and pins" part. If you don't know that it is hard to understand how this works.
Jay, great job explaining handcutting dovetails. This has always intimidated me but this made it seem a lot simpler. That magnetic guide looks awesome.
Fantastic idea Jay. I'm slowly starting to try Marc's hybrid type of woodworking and now have 3 lie Neilsen planes and one Veritas and a box like this is a great idea. Thanks dude
Nice work with that Jay! Your down to earth demeanor and relaxed nature makes me want to give hand cut dovetails a try. Thanks for the inspiration and giving me the motivation to give it a try!
Great project Jay! I've been following your channel for several years and it's been cool to watch how you've progressed as a woodworker and a video maker. Yours is now one of my favorite channels on RU-vid. Thanks!
i like the divider/slots for the tools.great idea. i learned with d.t.'s if it takes a hour to do 1 set of pins, it takes a hour. you'll thank yourself in the end.- when they turn out like those did.-got my jcc swag other day. quick delivery.good stuff..time to update my stickers;)have a good one bro. safe travels!
Jay, i found this to be one of your best videos. It seems like your fine woodworking skills have catapulted over the last year or so. Keep up the great work. Im working on a bed now that steals the wavy stacked pattern of the cooler box (looks awesome by the way) and when you compare the techniques between then and now it is killer.
Great job Jay! I like the guide you used to help with saw alignment. I will purchase one and now have the confidence of trying to make dovetails. Keep the videos coming I enjoy them.
First of all, very nice work! Secondly, thanks so much for providing a more detailed video than normal on this topic. You really helped de-mystify dovetail joinery for me. I don't think I'd still be afraid to try it someday.
Very well done on all points (in my estimation) detail, speed, video, result etc. Thank you especially for your honesty. Great 'teaching' video for us 'new' folks to the craft. Highly recommended.
Dovetails look great.... I saw that David Barron Magnetic guide a while ago and debated, getting it and never did... now that I see how it helped you on this project I'm thinking I should have got it. Great little tool box, I know for me the hardest part of making tool boxes if figuring out what I want to put in them LOL!
Very good looking work (as we'd all expect from you)! Thanks for the in depth look at dove tails. I appreciate your addressing the common pitfalls that I'd have surely found the hard way.
Truly outstanding Jay! It looks like you have been cutting dovetails by hand for years. And the tote is really nice. Lots of tools well organized in a small space. Much respect my friend, much respect.
Just reviewed this video again Jay, and I must say your one on one direction is spot on. I just ordered one on David Barron dovetail guides for my shop. I just loved the final product. It has very clean lines and looks great. Thanks for sharing
Awesome video! You should do a tool review of all those little things that make woodworking simplified, like the magnetic jig. Just put 5-10 of those in one video.
If you would have installed that vise on the right hand side of your bench, you could access your work from both sides instead of having to flip the board each time.I am a left hander living in a right handers world, so I notice things like this.Nice work, Jay!!
Very Nice simple design, this would be a very good practice project using Pine Boards, a bit cheaper that Oak. Thank you for sharing this video Mr Bates
