Any wood, highly degraded, and pre-punk works great for a hand drill fire board. We've all heard that Trumpet Vine, Willow, Cedar, Mulberry, Cottonwood, Basswood, etc make great fire boards, but even they will work better if slightly degraded. Very good teaching. Even using the knife as a mini vise was key.

That's a pretty good board holder with the knife.

Cottonwood board and a cottonwood spindle work very nicely. If you can get a yucca stalk for a drill that's the best. Bird's nest of dry grass works very well. Inner bark from a cottonwood is mosst excellent!

This is hands-down the best video on hand-drills. Has less to do with the wood type and more to do with its natural degradation....

Definitely comforting knowing how to do something like this. Probably not a bad Idea to get a wild edible plant book as well if you aren’t able to hunt. Learning how to trap is definitely good as well.

What did you do to fluff up the pine needles like that? Did you rub them in your hands? They seemed to catch well.

In my part of the country we have mostly Yellow pine , Water oak and Some Cedar . Are these woods ok for fire boards?
