Just a little announcement for animal lovers!
In August 2017, the Governor of Puerto Rico contacted Elephant Refuge North America (ERNA) to build an elephant barn. and requested that it receive Mundi, a 34-year-old female African elephant. For the past 29 years Mundi has lived alone at the Puerto Rico Zoo.
ERNA’s South Georgia landscape and climate are tailor-made for elephants. As an elephant in the prime of her life, Mundi will flourish at this next generation of sanctuary. It will be the first time in her adult life that she will experience a habitat that allows her to live fully as an elephant. The same will be true for the elephants who follow her.
If anyone would like to donate for the barn, please see the link below! ;)

I'm not sure if I should be excited or dismayed that I've started watching paper marbling videos. This looks like something I could get addicted to if I give it a try.

Nik, you're so funny...I thought I was the only one who had this problem-- I want to do this!...ooo what's that?... Look over here, I want to learn that! I fondly call it craft ADD.😂

It is awesome but very expensive when you're a stay at home mom and not making your own money! Sigh...good thing hubby thinks I'm amazing for having so many ideas...lol! I try to excuse myself and say 'You married a creative woman...' And he says 'Better this than spending money on stupid and silly things'. Haha good thing he doesn't find this type of stuff silly and stupid haha

well that and my real ADD...its a scary, dangerous combo! 😄

Nik the Booksmith I'm there with you on the real deal. It can be both a blessing and a curse; I love being able to hyperfocus on tasks but hate getting easily distracted and hiding things from myself that I had in-hand minutes before.

Nice! I plan to try something similar. I want to do Suminagashi with acrylic India inks on elephant hide paper. Probably will fail because all I know is the process but not the details behind it, but yeah. Your video gave me courage.

I think you are way too hard on yourself, there is not a piece of those papers that I would call a fail. They have so much texture to them and the colors are pretty even when they are a bit muddied. I like the one at the end that looked like granite but I also liked some of the pale more pastel ones...heck, I like them all, they're gorgeous.

Of all the crafts I've tried, and there's been hundreds, I've never tried this and pretty much always been on top of the list. I don't have a lot of space to do it in a 1-bedroom Milwaukee apartment....and then though "Oh, ouside!" but then your results were varied with THAT option. Made me want to try it more. Didn't realize you could do it with acrylic paints. Some of your "flops" are just my speed! Thanks SO much, keep the paper crafts coming Nik, they're fantastic!!

I actually like the grainy ones the best! And the couple printed on black near the end (with the white, grey, and gold) were my ultimate favorite of them all! Send them to me if you don't want them! lmao. Love the marbling. I've used this technique on my nails. putting polish in a cup of water, swirling it around and then dipping your nail in. Comes out the same! Super cool. I may try this one someday. tfs :)

I LOVE every single one of these papers! Some of your fails are my extreme favorites! The more subtle coloredones are more pleasant on the eyes than the very bright ones. For this being your first session at hand marbling, you prove you're an excellent artist!!! TFS!!! BTW, around 30 years ago, I tried marbling on liquid starch. Had many successes. Wondering if it would be cheaper doing it your way, or mine. I'll have to check it out, lol.

Marbling is temperamental. If it's rainy, or too hot, or too humid, it may not work. But even so-called 'fails' I think you may not like it too much one day, but on another day, week, month or year you might look back and go 'Wow! Did I do that?!!

I think it all looks good. I really want to learn this. It is so cool. Unfortunately, I have a lot of work travel this summer. Makes it hard to find time to try this out. Hopefully, I don't forget to try it in September when I have some time off. :) The instructions on the linked website say you have to rinse the paper after? How did you do that? Dunk it in another thing of water or under a running faucet? I'm thinking running water requires heavier paper? Thanks. And thanks for trying out all these things first. You are a great teacher. :)

I’m having problems with the paint running. Not sure what the problem is I’m using liquitex paints. They seem thin enough. I use the alum mixture on the paper and fresh carrageenan and rinse lightly in a tub of water. Any suggestions?

for the outside of that mental illness book - do you think they sealed it with anything like rubbed wax on it to preserve it? or just a few hundred years of grubby hand grease. i'm wanting to make a proper old fashioned journal like Anne Lister's diaries (she's SO cool, defo google her) and i've never ever tried to make anything like that before... but i'm like you - if i can't find something i want i watch a few videos, decide i can totally do it then jump in the deep end and spend many hours swearing like a sailor and hopefully coming out with something half decent by the end of it.

Hi Nik I couldn’t think of another character at the time to convey the “ A team “ commando type approach. It’s pretty ironic. Sylvester Stallone is Italian, your making italianesque marbled paper and books. And your tiny but performing heroic feats and you have a minimalistic, neat style. Love those papers. Recently I bought some small packs of silk paper and cotton rag paper. They would go beautifully with those papers.

What gorgeous papers you have made. I have purchased handmade marbled papers and these look just as good. My first marbling technique was almost 15 years ago with shaving cream. My last marbling technique was nail polish in water. A much smaller job, but it turned out nice for tags and ATC’s. I will have to look into this technique as it is much more useful. Thanks for sharing and I can’t wait to see your future projects using this technique.

Funny, this is what I have been working on. My red is coming out pinkish too. So I read that ox gall mixed in the paint helps the color sit better on the surface. Tried it but does not seem to make the red stronger. So now I am going to try cadeium red. I love your green, gold black combo the best. I have had few good ones, but mostly still discovering the process.
