2:53-3:14 •ulnar: “claw hand” at REST [passive] •median: “benediction/ape hand” with FIST [active]

Excellent explanation. Thank you so much. On the theory portion of my first block anatomy, there was a question about this, and the question left hints that split this paradox right down the middle (and I personally thought that the picture provided was somewhat misleading) to make it a challenge. But I got it, and this video helped!

very good explanation except flexor digitorum profundus digits 2 and 3 are innervated by a branch of the media nerve called the anterior inneroussi
@Anartomy
@Anartomy 2 года назад
Hi Graham - great point! I didn't specify the branch as I was worried about making the video too detailed, but you're spot on about the anterior interosseus nerve!

I have a doubt, in benediction deformity, why aren't 2nd and 4th digits doesn't get extended and MP joint and flexed at IP joints as 1st and 2nd lumbricals are damaged. Won't medial claw hand be caused?

Hey! Great video! I just wanted to clarify, in minute 2:28 until minute 2:34, you say "flexor digitorum profundus have split innervation, lateral half is under median nerve control, but the medial half is supplied by the ulnar nerve." But the colours are a bit misleading? Because the median nerve is in blue, and lies medially to the red ulnar, which means the lateral side is innervated by the ulnar nerve. Should we go after the colors or what you said?
@Anartomy
@Anartomy 2 года назад
Hi Arda! Thanks for checking, as I always worry about making these kind of mistakes! In this case though, I'm afraid both the narration AND the colours are the right way round. In the anatomical position, the thumb is the most lateral digit, so the median-innervated portion should lie closest to it, whilst the ulnar-innervated portion is found medially, passing to digits 4/5. I hope this helps!

Hello, so I understand that Flexor Pollicis Longus is innervated strictly by the median nerve but I also know that Flexor Pollicis Brevis is a muscle that has a split innervation (median and ulnar nerve). In terms of hand of benediction condition, wouldn't the person be able to slightly flex their thumb if only the median nerve is being affected?
@Anartomy
@Anartomy Год назад
Hi Erlyn, What a great question! You're right, the dual innervation of FPB would permit some flexion of the thumb (although it would be fairly limited). Apologies for the omission, I didn't want to overcomplicate the video/key diagnostic features!

Will you be able to flex the index and middle fingers in claw hand?
@Anartomy
@Anartomy Год назад
Good question! In ulnar clawing, only the medial two digits are affected, so you should be able to flex [and extend] the index/middle fingers as normal.
