Amazing. I am always inspired by people who spend time in recording and SHARING knowledge with the others. I have the same Volvo and I stuck with the handbrake task. This video comes in help. GOD bless you, man.
Thank you so much for all your tutorials on v70/S60 fixes. Pure gold mate! One comment regarding this one. On 2005< you don't need to do anything with carpet and back sit. Just take it off the hook under the armrest, attach some rope and pull it from below. Much easier on those.
Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and expertise. Why people would down vote this video is stupid.I guess they are the types who alert the fire brigade if they see a lit candle. Top chap!
"hopes this helps" Indeed it did SiRobb! Watched this today whilst doing my V70 cables. It's an absolute arsehole of a job - not particularly difficult, but just so many fiddly bits. My fingers are cut to shreds, and I have no idea what I've cut them on! Best bit of the video for me was your method for fitting the thicker spring for the shoes - I've had my brakes apart about 3 or 4 times in 5 years and the two things I always struggle with and the reason I hate the job so much is a) those poxy little shoe retaining springs, and b) getting that thick spring stretched far enough and hooked in. Well, I followed your method this time and by god, what an absolute doddle it was! Now I'm not put off having to do maintenance there in the future. Although I'm glad I'll never have to do the cables again (I don't expect to anyway!).
Fantastic video, you put a lot of thought into showing the important parts, and how to do it, you have made my life so much easier for the coming few days, because i have to replace the innards of my off side rear drum brake due to a catastrophic failure, which lead to everything within the drum to disintegrate, a broken retaining spring has led to this by all accounts ! as V70s are prone to severe damage if the retaining spring brakes, and looking at this video has helped me to know how to replace the expander, and what happens to it when pushed through to opening to the cable, so thank you very much, you're a lifesaver, and given me the knowledge required to tackle this with a certain degree of confidence.
Thanks mate, for doing it, and making it much easier for the rest of us ...im not changing the cable, but only the shoes, wich is a much easier job, but each time i drove thru a hole my rear end had a metallich sound, and found out it was my very much worned out brake shoes , and the springs where very worn...i love to SO great made videos on youtube even if i know what to do....as a mechanic . its just lovely that people like you take your time making it easier for others, so thanks a lot. grab a vel earned beer
Thanks for the great video. My V70 made a horrendous sound when starting to move on the drive way, which could only have been a faulty handbrake as the discs seemed ok. I took the hubs apart and the shoes had started to de-laminate on one hub and on the other side when I removed the rotor, the brake friction pads just fell out ! Luckily no damage in the hub itself. Just one hint for a less experienced mechanic like myself is that one might need to back off the handbrake adjustment, by the hand brake in the car, when replacing the shoes on a 140,000 mileage car, as initially I couldn't get the rotors back on ! Thanks again
Thanks for this video. I've just finished doing mine today. What a pig of a job! I ended up removing the centre console like yourself as the cable kept catching on something before entering the hole under the console. There was a small gap in the carpet that I could get my fingers in to sort it out.
oh, and another point, there is an aftermarket minor mod that is helpful. The fixed expander can be replaced with adjustable expanders off eBay or Amazon. They are just short of £15 for a set that does both sides. They allow adjustment of the shoes in side the drums and may even allow a longer duration before needing to change the complete cables.
Well. I'm not looking forward to it but it seems like my cables are done. Changed the pads out yesterday/today and the difference in new and old pads was around 1,5mill at tops. Adjustment was maxed out with the old pads at the handle end of cable. Thank you for the clear tutorial videos, these have made owning a volvo a very, or at least a relatively easy and pleasant experience, six years and 100k in so far! While I was at it, I swapped out driver side back door, that was also a pretty painless experience!
Brilliant video Simon I've learnt a lot from you're vids, keep up the good work handbrake shoes are on my to do list, I need to upload my swirl arm bodge so far it's held up just a simple copper wire mod. Adios mate and say hello to the other lads
Love your video' s mate, you have posted this just in time as i have the exact same job to do on my wife's S60 D5. I ve bought all of the parts but i could't find a good video on here with a step by step guide until this. I have also replaced all 4 brake hoses on my wife's, the rears are a bit of a git because of the position of the metal pipes where it meets the rubber hose but im sure you will be fine. One of my wife's HB cable where it meets the hub as destroyed its self (the plastic bit has failed)
So long as you're prepared for the odd hiccup, particularly the rear disc removal, you'll be fine. Yes I've seen the rear hose nut and even after removing the bracket as per Vida, access is still poor. I've cleaned up the connection and soaked in penetrating fluid and will be buying a flare spanner because rounding off that nut is not an option.☺️ Thanks for taking the time to comment.👍
I bought my 2005 xc90 T6 3 months ago and parking break never worked then I bought the brake shoes and kits trying to replace them few days ago only to realize that there were no brake shoes at all, not worn out or anything, they just didn’t exist at all and if there were actuators there I would’ve just put the new shoes on but there was no actuators or anything (actuators is the claw thing that hooks on the cable on the inside of the drum) so I had no choice but to put the disc and calipers back and wait until the order for the actuators arrive) got it today and am gonna do it on Saturday. It’s a pain parking it uphill at work
Thank you for the useful video. A couple of points. I do not understand why so many mechanics do not think of the next guy. The next guy might be you. You mention about how corrosion on the hub might be a reason for a difficult removal. So why not at least run a wire brush over it before reassembly. Also, I'm a retired aircraft engineer and have worked on cars and planes for over 50 years. I would never now put a bolt back without a smear of copper slip grease on the threads. And also would probably wire brush the threads of each bolt first. Anyone who has had to remove seized bolts would surely know how helpful this is. Also, how long does it take to soft brush away the dust or blow it with an airline, and wipe down with a cloth moistened with cleaner? Otherwise, many thanks and keep up the good work.
Hi Rob, thanks so much for your video-very detailed snd helpful-especially the part reference the knuckle installation as that isn’t self explanatory. After I changed the shoes and tensioned the cable it only holds on a relatively small slope and not a steep incline. I’m now wondering whether to buy new discs or try the adjustable eBay mod you can buy? Any help would be appreciated as the car failed it’s MOT.
Just done this and had a bit of a disaster. Expander wouldn't go back together. Bollocks. Just would not hook back in. Had to put everything back together for now minus the shoes. Starting pissin a rain when none was forecast. Should've stayed in bed.
No big deal bud, Hell I ended up tossing my rear brakes away and just put it back together with out the brake pads, I figure I have front brakes so fk it, I just drive slow,
Great video! Quick question - I have a S60 and the handbrake lever feels like there's nothing attached to it until right at the top of the movement at which point the handbrake works, although not very well. It's a friend's car so don't know if this has happened suddenly or over time. Also, apparently a garage has previously fitted an 'automatic adjuster', what would that be all about? Thanks!
You can disable the interior lights by holding the middle button for 10secs while door is open then it wont come on no more when you open doors but does reset when you press button again
When opening and closing the doors, the battery drain is more than just the courtesy lights as you can have multiple drains from the car being "awake" so I would still recommend the door lock trick to ensure the current drain is kept to the absolute minimum.
You should've sprayed down the entire wheel break system with break cleaner and brushed off most of that rust with a small white brush prior to removing any and all parts of the breaks, also it's obvious someone didn't care for the break system at all.
Started doing this on Sunday and the bastard bracket what the locating spring hooks into has come away at the top, hoping I can drill a small hole and put a small self tapper in there to hold it in place
on my s80 the handbrake broke a part like you said it could now the brake dust cover has a giant gouge through from the handbrake. anyone think I should just get a new dust cover and brake shoe, or do you think wheel hub is busted?
Thanks mate great video. I did my shoes without changing the hand brake cable, cable was good. My shoes lining had broke into pieces and brutal force had to be used to remove. Had to buy everything just like you did😬. Thank for you Volvo S60 videos, they do help.👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I Did this a while back but I wanted to see if you retro fitted the adjusters from an older model as most people advise to. And you didn't. I've had the issues as many v70 owners have of MOT failures due to the hand brake only working on one side and that problem has return since shoes have worn. Also I'm interested to know if you've had the rear brake shoes ratlle like so many do or if you know a fix for this very poorly designed system.
Liked and subscribed ! Thank you for the helpful vid ! I need to do pads, rear rotors, brake shoes and handbrake cables on my V70R, did you buy genuine Volvo handbrake cables ?
Great vid Sir Rob as all your vids are.One question,I will be replacing the rear brake pads, rotors and shoes with new spring hardware as well. Will I have to remove the center console to slaken off the cable adjustment? I don't really want to remove the console because my cables are fine. What is your opinion please.
Richard Pflieger If you're certain that the cables are still good, you can access the cable adjuster by unclipping and lifting the handbrake lever gaiter. Assuming you have a handbrake and not a footbrake like the XC90.
SiRobb- Nicely done. When I got into this, mine had come apart. The spring detail and sequence was quite good. I was wondering, why did you wait to put gloves on when you were almost done? 😂
Sorry just another question. The carrier / frame bolts. Apparently you're supposed to replace them when removed. Surely it's okay to just clean them thoroughly and apply some mild threadlock?
I did this job and I replaced the rotors and pads and painted the calipers, but I now get a clunk sound whenever I disengage the handbrake (only on the left rear wheel).. And the funny thing is, all of the springs are in place and the sound isn't there when I disengage the handbrake when the wheel is taken off.. So I have literally no idea what it is and I guess I'll just have to live with it
Parazitas007 You just pull them to hook them on which may be easier with a spare pair of hands. 2 new cables are of equal length and are routed the same distance so will be the same length inside the car. Either you have 2 odd cables or you haven't done everything exactly as shown so recheck your work.
I follow you as my car is a volvo s60. Just failed mot they said handbrake cables, shoes and springs needs replacing quoted £700 including mot charge, for volvo s60 2001, 2453cc. Do you think this a reasonable price? Would you do it? I will pay of course but depends how far you are from South London and the cost. Cheers
SiRobb, My right rear parking brake shoe de-laminated several months ago. I removed the rotor and most of the shoe pad just fell out. I put it all back together and have been driving without a handbrake. Today, I pulled some shoes from a wreck and began to replace my pad-less shoes. Once I got everything re-assembled, I could not get the rotor back on. It appears the shoes are slightly engaged and the mechanism that expands the shoes seems to be permanently somewhat engaged. In the end I gave up and put the whole thing back together with no shoes. My question then is this: Is it likely that the hand brake cable is frozen in the slightly "on" position which then makes the new pads sit proud? Is my only option to replace they entire system as shown here? Too much for me, I'll let the Volvo shop do it. This will be costly. Do I really need a hand brake? Rarely use it. Auto tranny is in park.
Replying to my own comment. Today, I took the cowling off the hand brake and backed off the adjustment nut. That then gave me just a little more play when installing the new shoes. The wheel went back on easily this time. Buttoned everything back up and rolled the car down a slight hill and made adjustments and now I have a hand brake. There was quite a bit of rust inside the rotor, but I assume that will wear down as I use the hand brake. Thanks for your videos
I can't get my driver side rear disc to go back on ground the lip off and put new shoes on The other side was really easy everything looks positioned properly
Hi Sirobb, I know what to do with the parking brakes of my xc90, I tensioned in the regulator that is in the console next to the driver's seat, according to your video, it does not brake well and it does not hold on a slope. second step I bought some tensioners on ebay and installed them on the rear drums, the shoes are correct, cables fine, I adjusted them almost brushing the drum, it brakes a little better, but it does not hold the brake in a difference of 20%, I am somewhat worried . I would appreciate your experience. Thanks for reading
With handbrake released, you need to tighten cables until you can't move the car then loosen the cable slightly until you can move the car again. When you then click on the handbrake, the car should hold very well. This is assuming that every component is working correctly.
@@sirobb THANKS FOR READING ME, AND FOR YOUR ADVICE. TOMORROW I WILL DISASSEMBLE THE ENTIRE CONSOLE AGAIN TO HANDLE THE BRAKE TENSIONER, I WILL CROSS THE FINGERS,
Not sure what you mean by "The triangle bit" ? but if you mean the lug that prevents the shoes from rotating when applied, then this broke off with my V70, causing untold damage to everything in the drum, all needed replacing, but i found an adaptor kit to replace the lug, cost just £15 on Ebay, bolts on with two bolts via the bolt holes for the backplate ! so knowing this is available tells me this problem is not uncommon ! read that this can happen if a retaining spring brakes, causing everything to be smashed to pieces ! so beware, always use new springs on any brake service ! even if it's just a cleaning job ! not worth the hassle and the expense !
At the very end of the video, you can see how the mechanism expands the shoes outwards and they contact the inside of the part of the rear disc which is shown at 9mins 50secs.
Absolutely no need what so ever to go to all the trouble of removing the rear carpets and all the trim that hold them, the cables feed out and back in from underneath without going to all this extra trouble. But well done for the video tutorial.
Lifting the carpet isn't unnecessary at all. The handbrake cables have a rubber bung with a double lip that is specifically designed to be gripped and pulled through the bodywork. If you leave the carpet and push the cable through, how can you be certain that the bung has sealed flush on both sides? The method I show is the official Volvo technician method. As for seat removal and lifting the carpet being trouble, it adds 5 minutes to the job so no big deal for a job correctly done.
Tosh. Did mine today. As SiRobb said, how are you going to get that rubber bung to seal without access behind the carpet? I found I had to partially push the bung through the hole from under the car with a long screwdriver, then go back inside and pull the bung through with my fingers the rest of the way (which meant I needed the carpet up) and then work it in to place so it seals. It's fiddly even with appropriate access. I certainly can't see an easy way to get the bung in place from under the car, access is too limited.
I don't think there is. Not officially or recommended at least. The "give" is the shoes coming to rest against the rectangular casting by the expander so unless you eliminated the small gap, you just have to accept it's a feature of this style of handbrake. When it happens, the wheel is locked so the car isn't moving but I can see how it can be disconcerting or cause annoyance.
+SiRobb Thing is. Cold or wet. or worse, both. If I park on a hill that little rock turns into a roll because of the inertia. I have to let my foot off the brake very cautiously. I'll tighten the handbrakes see if that makes any difference. But it really is just "A Volvo thing" as they say.
+Andrew Gallacher If your rock turns into a roll, the problem isn't the quirk of the rock. Basic nut adjustment is as good a place to start and see where you're at.
One advice : That expander mounted in 26:06 should be replaced with regulator from XC90- that allows you adjust brake shoes individually . Here is a photo: images66.fotosik.pl/1168/ae022ac8456c8426med.jpg
If you use genuine volvo shoes they work much better as they are the correct shape. Any other make are not quite exactly same. Volvo shoes make twice the contact on the drum.... try your old shoes against your new volvo ones.
Phil Sleddenhouston There's no such thing as Volvo shoes. ATE make the shoes and that's what is fitted in this video. This video is a year old and they still work perfectly.....of course. 👍
Well as you say no such thing as volvo brake parts when there made in china but i found an obvious difference with the shoe. This was pointed out to me yesterday when my friend was doing his . Ive got a handbrake on about 9 clicks so is it worth me adjusting inside the car?
@@sirobb v70 2004 , the rear handbrake shoes have been renewed, I've watched a lot of your vids and really like the way you work creep creep lol , I'm just getting a tad old now .
Lol, thank you. Everything would have to come apart (including the recently fitted components) for access but you feel like you just need 2 new handbrake cables I take it? Are they at the end of their adjustment and are the discs recent too?
