Handling Angry Chameleons

Today we are going to talk about a special handling case and that is when the chameleon is scared - or angry- enough to bite you. The only time you should ever handle a chameleon who is scared enough to want to bite you is if it is required for medicating them for their health. There may come a time when you will have to deal with a chameleon who has gone way beyond annoyance with your antics. Should that time come, you'll need to know how to handle this fiery tree dragon.
The best way to keep in touch with the Chameleon Academy community is by joining the free weekly email newsletter which covers a different chameleon topic every week. Your feedback helps create the next week's video and podcast! Click here to join:

Ya veiled chameleons are more aggressive and are not shy to let you know they do t want to be bothered. In my opinion the Jackson chameleons are the best to handle. They do not try to bite me and although they do tolerate more than a veiled chameleon they still don't like being handled. Only very rare circumstances will they actually choose to come to you without being tricked.

Joshua is correct, eyes will sink in due to stress as well. The chameleon was not happy being medicated. It was a necessary step and we would rather not have to handle them, but it is just like when we have to get a shot. Some of us need to be held down as well.
@drewdorton9018

@ChameleonAcademy

L L it can hurt depending on how big the chameleon is and how scared they are. Something the size of a panther chameleon or veiled can break the skin and draw blood, but it is just a surface wound and nothing to worry about.

A long q-tip would work. Just stick it through the cage. Poor thing looked like it was screaming. Very uncomfortable for me to watch but very informative. Beautiful animal. Thanks.
@ChameleonAcademy
@ChameleonAcademy 5 лет назад
Boby Skullit yes, this is uncomfortable to watch. Anytime an animal is struggling we are rightfully concerned. But this video was about when there is no choice. The natural reaction to being uncomfortable is to figure out a “just do this” way that avoids all the stress. Luis is highly experienced with caring for chameleons and acclimating/rehabilitating chameleons. He is not going to introduce unnecessary stress. But the fact is that sometimes you have to for the overall health of the animal. The effects of a stress spike fade away quickly. But infections will kill. So this has to be done. He is not “screaming”. He is looking for something to bite. There would be no way to ensure effective coverage with a q-tip through the screen. Luis works with wild caught animals and supplies zoos. This is something he has to be an expert on. The good news is that we don’t just to keep a chameleon. The best way to avoid ever having to do this is ourselves is 1) only keep captive bred babies (no wild caught) and 2) make sure husbandry is top notch from the start. (Don’t cut corners to save money)

Daaboo under proper husbandry chameleons almost never get sick. Under questionable husbandry chameleons almost always get sick. Good husbandry is a combination of light, hydration, temperature/humidity, and nutrition.

Chameleons usually bite only to get you to go away so they release once they feel safe. Most of the time they do not break skin, but both veiled and panther chameleons do have the ability to break skin and draw blood if they are so inspired. A parson’s chameleon is usually a docile species. But the bigger the mouth the harder the bite, of course. Even when they clamp down it is more surprising than actually painful, though I admit it is nowhere near comfortable. I actually had a bite last night showing my panther chameleon to our dinner guests. I woke him up and he gave me what I deserved. There was pain and an unmistakable jaw outline on my thumb which stayed until the morning, but it wasn’t a story any of my friends who raise emerald tree boas would be impressed with.

My chameleon hates me period. I walk into the room and she got a Tude. I move her if she’ll let me when I spray her cage down. She hates when I do this but that’s how she like to get her water. I’ve tried multiple times to give water by hand. She drank water once like that. I have a dripper. No clue if she uses it. Finally she has a small water dish she’ll drink from every once in a while. I have been bit by her. I tried to remove her to deep clean her cage. Once she was in my hand she chilled out and brightened up.

I know what you mean. I look back on what I struggled with when I started in the late 70s and there is so much I wish I knew. Even ten years go I wish I knew what I know now. It is exciting how much we have learned and how much I have grown personally. But there is an element of exhaustion thinking about how much work it has been to get to this point and how many unanswered questions there are. There is no other choice for us than to live in the time we do and do our best to move forward in that time. I probably have 20 good years left pushing chameleon husbandry forward. But it is humbling and frustrating to realize that I probably won't have all my questions answered before I am forced to retire. So I'll be grateful for what we know now, will not judge the best that we knew twenty (or 50!) years ago, and will retain humility knowing that my best husbandry today may be considered archaic twenty years from now. I am glad you stopped by my channel to check up on the chameleon world!

I've had my female veiled chameleon for about 2 months now, she's about 6 months old (I think) she is so scared of me, every time I walk into the room she will go and hide under the same plant and stay there and just look at me. If I try to get her out she gets stressed or runs away, but I'm at a stage now where I put my hand under the front of her and she stays frozen, where can I go from here? Thanks. To research, check out the podcasts at www.chameleonbreeder.com. When you are ready for a chameleon find a breeder you trust. I have known Kammerflage Kreations for decades and I know they are good people. If you are in the US, they can provide you with a gorgeous captive bred baby panther chameleon. Veiled Chameleons can easily go down to the 50s at night as long as you have a way for them to warm up during the day. We actually want humid nights and dry days for Veiled Chameleons. There is a comprehensive care sheet on The Chameleon Enthusiasts Facebook group that was put together by myself and a breeder that has actually studied them in Yemen. Here is a link lookaside.fbsbx.com/file/C-calyptratus-care-sheet-052618B.pdf?token=AWxPdMDk5lq3hYACufe4_rCHQ_1rFsI0aq8s33YUqGnrF6humSv8gyB5HYUvWAYY6cxv651y2vEgbntdV1DAWz28TWKMbEw0KQ80ngk9JprsULRkudnBHbJ3GQn6g9a_Pbd4KXJkWDya0bLm-5BIyT_P

It doesn’t have teeth so if it bites you will it hurt?

They do have teeth and can bite very hard! It is not hard enough that you could lose a finger, but they will draw blood.

My veiled chameleon (about a third the size of this guy) bit my dad's finger once upon a time, and his bite was strong enough that it took us running him under cold water for close to thirty seconds to get him off. Pierced several layers of skin, and my dad still has a scar. So yes, they do hurt, hahaha

Do they have teeth?

Debra Prisk yes they do! When they bite they can break the skin. But a chameleon bite is rarely a surprise. You get plenty of warning and people get bitten because they insist on ignoring the warnings.

Chameleons can do that when stressed or when going through health issues

Dude I have a angry,grumpy Chamelon like he wants to be left in alone. Which I respect but he makes it constantly clear that his cage is his territory by screeching at me.
