This Cold War era U.S. Army film, likely made in 1952, tells about the handling of military prisoners in the stockade. It begins with an escape scenario from a military prison, presumably caused by a guard's lack of knowledge. From that, the focus shifts to training. Since the greatest danger comes when the prisoners are working, most of film addresses this circumstance.
First, the guard verifies the ID's of his detail, 9:22. Then he uses trained responses and coordination of effort, particularly with the driver of the truck that is to transport the prisoners to their work site. If a prisoner attempts to escape, the guard follows a set protocol (13:40) and returns the prisoners to their barracks as soon as possible. The video tressed the importance of being Impersonal (17:17), The guard's goals are repeated several times -- Custody, Control and Discipline.
We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? During the 70s chain gangs were common and would often be seen doing work for the sheriff and his friends. My little league football team's field turned muddy w/ rocks and the chain gang came by. It was 6-8 men with one guard. The thought of them "running" was zero seeing how they loved getting out of that prison. Had you tried to stop them they probably would have got violent. As times changed the chain gangs vanished replaced by companies having their employees "volunteer" to clean a stretch of road.

Most posts no longer have stockades or prisoners on work details. This was shot in the 1950s. When I was a kid though I saw many at Fort Ben Harrison.

When I was at Chanute AFB in the mid-70s, I could see the old disciplinary barracks, nicknamed "The Pink Hotel" for the color it was painted. It had concertina wire at the top of the fence surrounding it, but there were no personnel there. First time I had seen it, I was very curious, but didn't remember to try to see it. It, like most of the older buildings on the base, is probably gone.

One guard to eight prisoners , no communications, no transport!!! And they bang on about guards doing the duty properly, crazy. And to cap it all they only give him 3 cartridges for his shotgun, let me see, 3 cartridges divided by 8 prisoners, that really makes sense....NOT.

Nobody wants to be one of the three to take a shotgun slug to the chest, that’s the rub. No one knows who will be killed. You have a 3 out of 8 chance of getting killed. Most wont take those odds and they know it.

The rebellious soldier holding the rifle would later be in Buck Rogers In The 24th Century(1979-81). 😁

This guard training film is distinctly different to civilian penal systems.

Sad that there are soldiers that are thrown into the stockade. Such a disgrace. Shocking to me that there are men that would face court martial.

Most posts no longer have a stockade. This was shot in the 1950s. Soldiers who commit minor infractions now are usually fined (get an article 15) instead of getting stockade time. Major criminals go to real prison at Fort Leavenworth. Soldiers who can’t adjust to military life are kicked out.

grabir01 This was also a draft army. So while there were many volunteers, there were also men who really didn’t want to be there.

@@martialmusic I'm pretty sure there are still brigs, atleast in the Marine Corps. And C.C.U. or Correctional Custody Unit.
