I happened to stumble upon this video while looking for something else. How wonderfully Vedavalli Amma has put this. This was both enriching and humbling. Pranams to Amma 🙏🙏
After listening to Vedavalli Mami lecture, one thing struck me like a Thunder Bolt. My late father, who was a Self Taught Flautist and Singer from Palakkad, used to describe Ataana as a "Commanding, Mirattara, Adattara" Raagam. And he made this observation almost five decades ago when I was a school going boy and learning Mrudangam from Sri. S. Venkatarathanm, disciple of Thinniyam Venkatarama Iyer and nephew of Tanjore Sankara Iyer in Triplicane Madras. And I told this aspect in front of Rasikas in A Lecdem Q&A session by Dr.Sundar during 2013 December at Raaga Sudha Hall and Dr was little sceptical about my father's insight on Ataana and refused to even think on those angle and today when Mami highlighted this Intricate aspects of this Raaga Ataana, I had Goosebumps and tears in my eyes for having born to a Self Made musician who had tremendous knowledge about Carnatik Music. God bless Mami for A Healthy Happy and More Musical Journey and to share more such wonderful knowledge about Carnatik Music. Mikka Nandree..😀😇😍🥰
Past...Present....And the way forward... Wonderful. I'm at 55. Your talk not only arrested ne, but also enticing me to learn. Hope to learn atleast the first one...The Sarali Varisai. Anbudan Arasu
i never thought even in dream that carnatic music is so deep.i wonder how young children understand it &answer the questions of judges in competetions😀
Although I did not understand her explanations which is in Tamil (my mother tongue is Telugu) I have listened spell bound and very much liked the spectacular Athana ragam. The very slokam of Guru smarana is rendered in Athana. I congratulate and compliment madam Vedavalli garu. Thyagaja's krithi Bala kanaka maya is wonderfully rendered.
chembai bhagavathar's rendition was excellent , - its avlble in utube, in another channel..even aftr 100 times of listening , it still worth and again prompting me to listen !!
Loving it, learnt so much. The G reduced to the R in bala kanakamaya by modern praxis. Interesting. The great Dr.Vedavalli is a treasure trove of knowledge, We should have more lec dems.
It was heartening to hear your views and description of swara prayogas in atana and was reminiscent of your music lessons at the Music academy. If it is true that ragas and kirtans preceded the time when the melakarta scheme and janya ragas were identified, is it then possible that instruments like the flute (which was played by Lord Krishna) gave rise to these raga swaroopams?
Nicely presented demo about Atana. But sad part is there is no mention of Karnataka Sangitha Pitamaha's master piece song "Sakala griha bala neene Sarasijaksha ".
Should understand that the kritis of Shri Purandara Dasa are not set to tune by him but others. Vidyabhushana has sung it in an entirely different set of ragamalika ragas. Also, there are many who sing them in the Hindustani style. And the lec-dem is on post 17 th century, post melakarta scheme Ataana.
