These pictures show the beautiful handmade woodwind instruments - crafted by Scotland’s last flute maker. George Ormiston has been making flutes and piccolos for 42 years and is one of less than ten remaining manufacturers in the UK who make the instruments from wood. Geroge, 68, who played the flute as a teenager, has two workshops - one in Bo’ness, Falkirk and another in Stirling - where he meticulously crafts his instruments by hand. The trade has been classified as endangered on the Heritage Crafts Association’s list of endangered crafts.

I've got his 1158! The first time I tried it, I was grumpy as all hell because I had to transition from my Copley to this one, and it played so differently that all I could do was complain. Let me tell you, now that I forced myself to make peace with it instead of resenting its differences from my old flute, it's a glorious thing. It plays like a dream, and both folk music and classical sound wonderful on it. The keys are fast, the head is responsive, and I just adore it. Plus, he makes left-handed C foot joints, so I've got the full range on a beautiful looking and sounding flute!

I have the short R&R model #476. It was my first ever wood flute. I'm coming back to learning how to play all over again.

I just bought a foot Meyer flute. Do you know what size pads it uses for the right hand. (Dflat, C, and B.)

All Irish Flutes in all keys will have low G footjoints eventually!!!!!!, along with Hall Crystal Flutes!!! Tony Dixon and all other Irish flute makers and Hall Crystal Flutes and simple system flute makers will make Irish flutes and piccolos in all keys with low G footjoints eventually so they can improve intonation!!!!

Because wood moves when it is machined and bored, as natural stresses are relieved and redistribute, and it needs a long time to settle down, and flutes must be allowed the parts to season like this over many years. You can't take a blank from the sawmill and immediately produce a finished flute. It would warp, bend, and crack. This is standard woodwind making practice. It's a good question!
