Daniel Waples is a musician who has traveled the world with his hand-pan, producing ethereal, other-worldly sounds. He both describes and performs this steel-drum related instrument in this infectious Talk of a busker in love with his role as an artist.
Now with over 30 millions views on RU-vid, Daniel Waples has recorded 10 albums to date and performing in almost 50 countries across 6 continents. Waples supports himself as an independent musician, spreading the gospel of the HandPan, an acoustic musical instrument associated with energy work and alternative healing, and one which he hopes will become a Symbol for universal peace and the Inner journeys all people take pursuing their individual Paths. He is currently working very closely alongside the makers of the instruments that he plays.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

What beautiful music and a charming gentleman. I was surprised when you said the pan was invented in Switzerland, anything percussive (intuitive) you normally expect them to originate from elsewhere. I started to understand more when you got round to introducing Ellie (sorry if I spelt this wrong). but then you didn’t quite tell us where his contributions come in, were the tears an apology of some sort? I love the way you play them from my homeland, thanks for giving us a mention.

I saw him on a documentary. The hand pan drum is cool. I never saw or heard one before. I looked them up. They range from $1000 to $2700. Too pricey for this poor busker. 😟

Joel, you got that right. It's insane. We buskers aren't rich. When's the last time you ever saw a busker with a $3500 Gibson Hummingbird? Or a $4000 Martin? Never.
@joelvaross
@joelvaross 6 лет назад
Exactly, and I can´t see the relation of effort of creating and the product. It can´t be that expensive to set it at that price tag.

My thought exactly, brother. It seems just like another example of capitalist greed. Something I thought Daniel was against. Amazing how money and wealth changes a person's perspective.

The instrument is called a Hang Drum. Near or same as a steel drum or steel pan. Each divet or small hole is a different note. The lump on the top is a bass note.

Hang drum o hand pan.

Someone should tell the youngster that coffee also makes the brainwaves noisy, unpleasantly fast, gibberish, chatter. Listen to the speed he's speaking at, it's just restless fast noise.

Some people speak in a faster pace than others as their brains work more quickly. Also, many artists feel nervous in front of crowds no matter how passionate we are about music. Daniel came to our city as a guest to raise vibrations on a simple request because he's kind person. He travels the world helping various causes and hardly making his ends meet. Listen to the whole video. At 9.09 he plays Pan and talks simultaneously thus his speech relaxes. At 10.01 he says he is told he 'speaks too fast' :-D Truthfully with integrity. Not many artists or humans in general speak so openly. Perhaps, watch his many videos since this TED talk and before his 'fame'? If you find some pleasantness resonates - you can support him/Ghana by buying his CD's / Cas Cas on bandcamp - all or most of which you can listen to for free if purse strings are tight. Patreon is also a thing now too... ;-)
