@@idrisstdj A 24-70mm and 85mm are two lenses I couldn't live without doing portraits/weddings. I would love 50mm and 35mm primes, but the compromise would be having the 24-70mm and it gives me those focal lengths as well as 24mm for groups which is super useful. And serves double duty as a general purpose lens. But 24,35,50 mil primes are on my wish list. Already got so many lenses, need to pace myself.😆

I vibe the 50mm and 85mm combo, it's not as much difference in focal length, but the 50mm is kinda like "focused environmental" and the 85mm is just the true portrait length. Also it's easier to accidentally get wonky face effects with the 35mm vs the 50mm.
@ERoossien

Agreed! 35 and 85 and a 105 3rd. 200mm compresses the image too much imo.

@ERoossien
@ERoossien Год назад
@@arieldavid20 not my fav range. 85 and 105 are just the sweet spot I think. If I do need more compression for some reason I'd throw on a 70-200 F2.8 between the 105 and 200mm range. Give me more freedom in the exact amount of compression vs either a 135mm or 200mm prime. For me a bg bokeh with 2.8 is more than enough. And if I want even more blur, there's photoshop.

The 2 for me, after doing this for a couple years and trying a handful of things. I’m on my f/1.8 nifty fifty. Ol’ reliable. HOWEVER, i use it less and less and on some occasion don’t even take it with me. Because my f/4 24-105 is just giving me some terrific results. I also love moving around with only one lens. And I do mostly shoot portrait but if and when I can, I think I’ll upgrade the nifty to a 85 f/1.2. But the 24-105 is going to be a staple for me for a very long time

For portraits, 24-70mm f/2.8 and 85mm f/1.2. If I had to add a third it be a 70-200mm. If I could only have one, it be an 85mm. And this is from practical experience because when starting out the 85mm f/1.2 was my only portrait lens and I could make do with just that. It is wide enough I can walk back and get a couples shot or get in close for a tight head shot. The extremely wide f/1.2 aperture allows for great background separation but not only that a gorgeous fall off of DOF that renders sharp eyes and the rest starts to fall out of focus. In my opinion any portraits kit should have some kind of 85mm prime in there, it is indispensable. And I would have to agree, a 35mm prime is SOOOO good as an environmental portrait lens. I can see why he loves it.

@matrixate 10 месяцев назад
@@PuReXtremeGamingBecause if the 35mm. That lens is the number choice for learning and sets you up to add the 85mm. Gee...isn't that what Ortiz said? There's a reason why he mentioned it. If you had to choose for a first all around lens, the 35mm. If you want to take pictures of just people close up, then 85mm. 50mm is kind of in between. Tbh, there's no right or wrong answer, but with a good 35mm like the GM f1.4, it covers every situation better than the 50mm.

@@matrixate except your replied to a comment of someone saying they left 35 for 50 and enjoy both so it implies that going to a 50 made him better photographer that's how I saw what you comment wrote my understanding
@matrixate
@matrixate 10 месяцев назад
@@PuReXtremeGaming Sorry bro. Conveying all my thoughts in a sentence, can be a bit challenging. What my reply implied was that he used a 35mm and discovered that he needed a lens with tighter framing. It doesn't mean he's a better photographer, it means that he was able to discern from his style of shooting that he typically goes tighter. You see...he couldn't have done that with a 50mm in smaller places, but he could with a 35mm. That's usually the case with everyone that gets a 50mm first...they find that they want tighter shots. However, people that go with a 50mm lens as their first lens typically find they need a wider lens. If that is the case, then the perfect combination is the 85mm. This is well-known to all professional photographer. Any pro photographer has a 35mm and an 85mm in their bag. Now, on the other hand, a 50mm marries up with a 24mm. The best option is to rent a 35mm and a 50mm. Seriously. If you really are into this, you'll make the small investment because a good lens...is not cheap. I say, the 35mm is better because you can take wider shots in small places. You can't do that with a 50mm. A 35 covers the 50mm field of view. The 50mm doesn't. The 35mm is more forgiving for shakiness. The 50mm is just a little more demanding of steadiness. This is especially true when filming video. Ok...that should be enough now. Any more information, I'll have to bill you.

I do a mixture of event/street and environmental/adventure style for architecture, and I started digital mirrorless with MFT alongside 120 and 35mm film and see zero reason to go for bulkier/more expensive FF equivalents. For that, the two I would get the most utility if we're talking strictly primes would probably be the 15mm and 42.5 Leica Pana Leica lenses. That's 30 and 85mm equivalents that are top quality glass in small packages (kind of, the 15 is small, the 42.5 Nocticron is a beast for MFT). I went MFT because with HiRes mode at the time I could rival my Fuji GFX 50R close enough. Selling off GFX let me load up on top glass and a couple bodies. I won't say MFT is "better", objectively on paper it's worse, subjectively I've had people pick photos I took with my Pentax Q7 over the 50R. For the use case of said photo, the 12mp tiny sensor put out the image they loved.

Well I have 3 primes, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm. If I was forced to downsize I would probably get rid of the 35mm as if you are outdoor you can easily step back with a 50mm to get more environmental background in without making a person look fatter then what then are due to distortion. But I like the 35mm for indoor group photos with limited space.

Get a 24-70 2.8 first and then get a good prime 35 or 85, in my opinion sigma art is the best value glass

Imma go with a sharp but midrange 28mm and fast 50. But I shoot crop sensor, so its pretty compareable. Add a speedbooster and youre good to go.

Thanks for reminding me to shoot more portraits wide. I almost always grab my 85mm for portraits.

I agree … lovely focal lengths although I also adore the work of Saul Leiter he did legendary work with telephotos perhaps 135mm or 150mm….

The two I use to work on a ff sensor are the 50mm1.8 and 85mm1.4. These cover 99% of the work I do.

50mm and 135mm for me. If I could only choose one I would choose the Tamron 35-150mm.

My two lenses are the 24-70 GM II and 70-200 GM II. But, my two studio portrait lenses would be the 50 f1.2 GM and 135 GM.

For me? My Z 14-30 F4 S and my Z 70-200 f2.8 S lenses! But that's because I do real estate and architectural photo shoots. For my portraiture work, the 70-200, and a nifty 50 f1.4. An 85mm is a nice choice, too.

Same goes for me for portrait. 35 f 1.4 and 85mm f 1.4 are my favorite portrait lenses as well. I have both 50mm and 135mm lenses too but I hardly use them.
