Hands-On: Bambu Lab A1 $400 3D Printer!

We go hands-on with Bambu Lab's newest printer, the $400 A1. A speedy bed slinger design with the same build plate and volume as Bambu's X1 and P1 line of printers, the A1 inherits all of the design features of the previous A1 Mini without compromising print size. But how does this printer change the purchasing decision of someone looking to get into FDM 3D printing, and does it make sense in Bambu's wider lineup?

Three big things had to come together to make reliable high speed printing happen at the consumer level. First we needed more rigid frames to constrain movement while also being smooth. Second, we needed advanced Input Shaping to prevent resonances from being produced that would show up as artifacts in the print. Third, we needed reliable high-flow nozzles in a lightweight direct-drive extruder to maintain the best control of flow while avoiding ooze and stringing. On top of all that, Bambu added more smart sensors, a decent setup wizard, and plenty of fit and polish. This is pretty much the textbook definition of “industry-leading,” and it’s pushing all of us to keep reaching higher. The next big challenge is to do something about plastic waste in multi-color printing. There are ways to make filament at home from your old scraps, but anything we can do to reduce the waste in the first place will be a huge help.

I've seen quite a few people reuse the scrap filament towards providing cushioning for sent out parts.

The price difference is really for the full combo. A1 with AMS light is $560 but the P1 with AMS is like $860 (P1P) or $960 (P1S). Saving $300-400 made the difference for me because I wanted to be able to use the multi-spool features. You can buy a lot of filament for $300.

With how much bambu lab has shaken up the 3d printer space the past few years. The next few years should be pretty exciting to see what other printer companies come up with to catch up that aren't just stop gap measures.

There is a upcoming printer (that i forgot the name of ) that has a Big build volume and is fast , but that is not the most important thing , the real thing is that it has an add-on that adds other 4 toolheads with nozzles at all , these toolheads are installed in the sides of the Main toolhead , if the model is not super wide , you can put all of the 5 heads to make the same model , which esentially means you can multiply 5 times the production of some models

To correct - at 5:20 or so it's stated that a firmware update has come for the X1 and P1 printers to include active noise cancellation. This is true for the X1, but the P1 series has not received such an update yet. Bambu has said it is planned.

I have a P1S. The print quality is IDENTICAL to the X1. Literally the only difference is that they handicapped the software to make it slightly more cumbersome to use. As an example both printers have lights and cameras and record awesome timelapse videos… With the X1 you can download and preview and watch these vids using the bambu software. But on the P1, they require you to physically remove the SD card to access the timelapse vids and view them. This “handicapping” strategy for the P1 and the notorious “forced slowdown” of ALL prints using non-Bambu brand filament will sadly eventually be their downfall. I still love my P1S w ANS tho.

@802Garage
@802Garage 10 месяцев назад
This was exactly my assessment. Solid printer with lots of features for the slightly premium price. The important thing is they priced it only $100 over the already popular A1 Mini. Everyone looking at the Mini is going to think "Well, it's only $100 more." and take the step up. I knew they would launch it at $399. Very clever.
@free_spirit1
@free_spirit1 10 месяцев назад
It's kind of surprising how price sensitive FDM consumers have become. Was 400$ for a printer always 'slightly premium'? I honestly can't remember.
@802Garage
@802Garage 10 месяцев назад
@@free_spirit1 Definitely not. A printer with features like this used to be far more expensive. A lot has changed in the past year alone. I say slightly premium because it's still half the price of a Prusa for example, but twice the price of an Ender 3 V3 SE or almost twice as much as an Ender 3 V3 KE, Sovol SV07, Elegoo Neptune 4, or Anycubic Kobra 2. None of those have all the features this does, but they're all largely comparable for basic printing. So it's a moderate step up in price for a step up in quality and additional features. It's definitely not an unreasonable price. Also consider it's close in price to some of the more affordable enclosed printers like the K1 or something from Flashforge. The Adventurer 3 Pro is $399 and is enclosed with a camera and more, but smaller build volume by a lot and slower. The Adventurer 4 and 5 models get closer in size and speed, but are $100 and $200 more. So it slots into a nice spot as a high end bed slinger without being as boutique as a Prusa. It of also nips at the heels of the Bambu Labs P1P, making it seem both expensive and like a bargain at the same time.

@802Garage

@@marcelbirkenkamp1386 I do think the A1 is the better overall value at $399, even if it's a bit of a premium over comparable printers from other brands. If you're primarily doing miniatures or something, the A1 Mini still makes more sense. Hope it works well for you!

I've seen several reviews on this printer and am seriously looking. My 1st printer was an Ender3 v2, a good starter printer but now there are many better printers for the same or cheaper price. A question, some reviewers found artifacts in the prints ( from the fast print speeds perhaps), couldn't you just slow the print down to eliminate these on parts where beauty is more important than speed? It would still be many times faster than my Ender3 v2. Excellent review by the way.

Yeah in the slicer you can add a modifier to the part and change the print settings to only affect where the modifier overlaps. You can change speed/quality settings but you can't change acceleration afaik. In addition, during the print you can switch to silent mode (using the touchpad) which halves the speed of everything.

Simple and straightforward: if you want to print, get baboon lab(any) . If you want to tinker get anything else.

not true. it has lots of issues but all is proprietary and can't be modded. i prefer k1/max for single color, swap motors and gantry and hotend and you have a perfect machine. k1 max is like 500-600€, with mods 800€. still cheaper than bambu and after mods also better. if creality comes up with an AMS system bambu is in danger.

Gah, I'd love this, but it doesn't seem available in NZ yet. Which is annoying as hell, especially as if this had afterpay etc it would be easier for me to buy.

I have a solution to save filament due to purging. The derivatives to the solution The purpose of purging being only to clean the nozzle Thus why use filament by extruding it A purge liquid solution solution can be piped into the nozzle When a nozzle needs color change the the liquid is filtered through the nozzle The nozzle is the air dried before the next color filament is put through extruder The liquid itself is a solution that cleans plastic or absorbs plastics however not too corrosive or dangerous its just a little container with solution liquid on the side of the printer the container has a pipe running into the nozzle of the printer . The container is electronic and has a connection adapter to the AMS Lite or 3d printer itself Thus when the AMS Lite triggers filament change a delay is initiated whereby the the container cleans the nozzle by pumping the liquid through the nozzle and blow drying it with air Sincerely Ejike Ememe Ba Hons Degree Administration Thames Valley University London

Where is anyone seeing this printer sold for $400?
@Argyll9846
@Argyll9846 10 месяцев назад
In Australia this printer is a ripoff - it sells for $A899 which is a price premium of $A300 above the US price. To be on parity with the US price, the price for this printer would be $A699. This is the price stated on the Bambu Lab website. but when you click the link on the site, the Australian price jumps to $899. It's a good printer, but not so good that you'd want to be ripped off.

a1+ams $560 vs p1p $600 vs p1s $700...but p1p is on only one sale $100 off (no ams option tho, and the addon is $350 for it...unless the a1 ams is compatible?)
@juliettaylorswift
@juliettaylorswift 10 месяцев назад
:( p1p apparently requires expensive ams "No, the AMS Lite is not compatible with the P1P printer. If you want to use multi-color printing with the P1P printer, you should use the AMS or AMS hub."
