We get up close with Volume, a true volumetric display that can be used for creating 3D content, viewing depth-enhanced videos, and playing holographic games. Its inventors stop by our office to explain how the display works and how they hope volumetric imaging can change how we interact with computer graphics and imagery.

In most cases in the editing software it's simply one button that has to be pressed. If they really wanted to do stereo they could at least mix it dominantly to one side or the other but not completely.

Why isn't the camera moving around the 3D display to show it's depth?!
@lucianomaia9460
@lucianomaia9460 5 лет назад
My exact thought, what's the point of showing a 3d display and not moving around? it would be much better if instead of a video they would put a static 3d image and move the camera around, this would show us the real effect of the device
@ruslmuscl406

That’s not quite why, it requires two cameras (like you have two eyes) to see in depth.

Morph Verse No, it's actually a pretty valid reason to dislike the video. A dumb reason to dislike the video would be something like disliking it because you dropped your phone this morning. The bad audio mixing really made the video bad and almost unwatchable with headphones, I converted it to mono just to watch it. Disliking the video because of poor editing or similar is exactly what dislikes are for.

This is cool, the main issue I can see is the difference between layered light and layered matte surfaces. The layered light will intensify with each new layer that overlaps it. I'm assuming thats why they are limiting the number of slices and the brightness of the display (it looks quite dim). The layered matte surface looks much better with the 3D frog and man as it occludes the layer behind and relies on ambient light to reveal it, like a real object in the room. So maybe the layers need to be some form of liquid crystal display that does not emanate light, then are lit externally (think gameboy display with the top light LCD display).

not gonna lie though definitely not a consumer product yet, the video quality isn't worth it (maybe as technology advances so will this). And the idea of a 3D kennect (or however they spelled it) is neat and all, but the quality of what's displayed, 3D or not isn't worth the money. I mean, you might as well give me a VR headset that uses the same type of technology to detect my movements (Imagine vr and kinnect combined except the kinnect part was good and worked well) and you'd have the same thing.

Pretty cool! Would be very interesting to see when it develops more.. bigger screen.. or cube? higher res, etc.. With progression of this technology, I can see it getting there. Maybe it's hard to show the real 3D effect of this device, but I am also curious how it looks like when you walk around looking at it.. I feel from what we've seen, it's may only be visible from the front and certain angles off the front image plane.. can you see it all around?.. You guys seem to be viewing from the back (maybe a reverse or inverted 3D image of what you'd see from the front?).. so perhaps front and back angles only.. the side I think would disappear, possibly. And, I believe you'd probably need to use and see this in at least a dimly lit room, if not as dark as possible. Because it's made of light on a transparency, the images displayed will probably always be at least semi-translucent and never completelyt opaque... it would be interesting if there was a way to get the pixel density and intensity high enough so the objects viewed could look more solid rather than ghosted. This is just another from of virtual reality. Very cool stuff, but unfortunately we're still limited by the fact there must be a medium between us and the virtual projection.. Either with a headset or goggles as we've seen a lot of variations on already these days, or if it's "physically" in our world, it still needs a medium to project and be viewable. It's hard to imagine there will ever be a day that we will get true 3D virtual reality holographic projection like what we've seen in Star Trek's Holodeck.. where you don't need a head set or piece of plastic to project and virtual object into or through, but have it materialize in thin air..

Hmm. A very nifty concept, to be sure, but at this point it seems more of a novelty than a ready to market product. The audio here is distracting. It reminds me of old records from when stereo first became available, and they really wanted to show it off, hard-panning things to the left or right. Also, I had to replay at 5:08 to make sure someone wasn't banging on my ceiling. Maybe I'm missing the point, and the audio was an attempt to create 3D sound to go with the 3D display? :)

This is very early and conceptual technology. It is cumbersome and not pretty good. But it is a prove of concept. This is how most new technologies look years before they are good enough to be introduced to the masses. Touchpad, flatsceens, the computer. They all were at some point in this stage of development. And this is basically VERY early holographic technology.

I had no idea the audio was so bad for most headphone users. I personally have the Artemis G633, with Tru Dolby 7.1 turned on, so the reverb just made the 2.1 channel audio on this video sound fantastic and more immersive. However, I can understand the pain you guys are going through. Before I purchased the G633, I had broken my G35 headphones and was forced to listen through my ATH-M50X for a week, it gave me a headache listening to an audio track on a single ear. I hope they fix this soon, you guys should try tweeting about it. However, I do enjoy 2 channels of microphones, but they should run the 2 channels through DTS surround or Dolby Digital compression at the least, that way the audio actually sounds more immersive, while giving our ears more equality.

I'm listening to this with a 7.1 surround headset and it sounds amazing. The users here who are complaining about the audio might be using a 2.0 setup. If this is why some have bad audio and I don't, then a feature for setting audio to 2.0, would be very helpful, and perhaps don't post videos yet with 7.1 if the platform does not allow users to switch back and forth. There was a sound, think he is putting down the iPad off camera, @5:08, and I jumped because it sounded just like it happened in the room I'm sitting in. 7.1 FTW, but still, an option to switch to a 2.0 track might be useful.

Did these guys miss the memo on transparent LCD/OLED displays? Then again, this approach could be cheaper than just having a bunch of those.
@Draekeun
@Draekeun 7 лет назад
Think about putting a 3D image in a 3D plain. Those only project a 3D image in a 2D plain. It's like seeing a cube on a TV versus seing a cube in real life, irl is more immersive than a TV could ever be. So for right now this is the best we can do when it comes to putting a 3D image in a 3D plain without using a vr headset. Unless using some OLED screen for this is possible, but it would be way more expensive and probably harder to do... But idk.
@sensells
@sensells 7 лет назад
I should have been more clear. I was visualizing stacking multiple transparent LCD/OLEDs to accomplish the same thing these guys are doing by projecting onto ten planes from below. They're going to run into limitations in the optics of the projector before they get to a really good resolution on the planes. In order to keep the projected image in focus throughout the depth of field occupied by those planes, very close to the projector, they would need a crazy tight aperture and very bright emitter. A stack of multiple transparent displays would eliminate this issue entirely. That said, a whole bunch of transparent displays would probably be more expensive than this setup. And I could be missing something.
@jorgedanielhernandez3949
@jorgedanielhernandez3949 7 лет назад
OLED's are very expensive (the device would cost way more than 1k), and LCDs are polarized. Stacking 2 or 3 = totally opaque.
@sensells
@sensells 7 лет назад
Good point on the polarization used in LCDs. I didn't even think about that. I don't doubt that the OLED setup would be expensive. How much cheaper could the final projector design be, I wonder?

I listened to it through a one ear bluetooth headset and it seems it mixes the channels together. Because while I heard it as normal mono. There was this awkward dead silence between the speakings. But about panning. This is kind of a beginners phase normally. Hard panning the left and right channels and removing all noise and roomtone... But Tested has been doing videos for years. Tested should know how to mix a non-distracting track right? There's a simple rule that is followed by practically all sound mixers of Hollywood 5.1 movies... if the speaker is in frame... keep the sound in center. Actually. If not properly motivated to do otherwise. Always keep speech in the center. To test this. Unplug your center from your 5.1 system and see how much speech you get from the front left and right. Yes there are times when a hard pan is preferable. But the vast majority of speech is served best with a center mix. Even trickery like mid/side mixing is mono friendly while retaining a stereo feel. Not convinced? Well the video was about a potentially revolutionary process to get hologram like volumetric video. And what do the comments go on and on about? The vast majority?

So essentially for a 10 plain volumetric display, to achieve a 1080p image you would need a 19K source? Source = Output Height x Planes(n) ? Even if Moore's Law did apply here based on this prototype this will take 2 to 5 years to be possible? Nice.

When filming 3d stuff with a 2d camera, remember to move the camera side to side.

My phone doesn't have an RGBD camera, so it can't record volumetric videos.

How this works please ?

As I understand some volumetric displays use voxels (3D) instead of pixels (2D) but the actual process of displaying in volume differs.

They should start a kickstarter for a 3D holographic fish tank with a motion sensor so when putting your hands up to it like your feeding the fish or whatever, they will react.Lets say you can upload different fish or mini sharks and stingrays via wifi or bluetooth LOL I would buy it. I do not like changing fish tank water its to much and I bet a lot of people would agree.

Maybe a modelling product but its a long way off it has to be better than a physical model and as cheap. If it does get that detailed it could cross into the Sims, Age of Empires doll house type gaming or museums.

Amazing video, but why are you using a directional mic? Or a separate mic for each speaker? Through external speakers this is pushing it, but with headphones it's unbearable! I've been composing music for years, and even with stereo-widening on maximum TWICE, it's easier to listen to. Please... mono would be better.

1:16 He mentions pixels but a true volumetric display would use voxels.

Omg!! I came up with an idea that's identical to this, I think my idea works better of course, totally not an engineer! I think I cried a little

Yeah, this happens all the time, when someone comes up with an idea, and it turns out, somebody else hasn't just came up with similar idea, but also have made a real hardware. It's especially funny, when it turns out this has been done decades ago.

You have a 3 denial monitor but you record it parallel to the camera... Showing off 3d to the best of 2ds ability... You could have tilted it
