I recently got a DJI Phantom 4, and holy cow is it fun to play with, take awesome scenery videos with, and fly around in some places where you wouldn't usually be. Using this with family is fun! I went to the park with my uncle and we had a blast. Nice review!

Great first review! I own the Phantom 3 and really like the new features of the Phantom 4. However, I would guess that after one typical crash one or more of those sensors will be fried (too much to go wrong). Also the new identification follow me mode is limited in it's uses (most be only 1 moving object in view & correct lighting). Other problem is flight time. Certainly in Normal mode with reduced speed one would get 28 mins, but in Sport mode I'm guessing 8 mins less. I like the obstacal avoidance BUT I like to fly between objects and I would think I'd have to turn it off to accomplish this smoothly. In your next video can you also compare the P4 designed gimbal to that of the P3 for range of movement and smoothness of video. Thanks.

Hey guys, thanks for the video. So you know, I just purchased a phantom 4 as my first drone. I am a film maker and am making a documentary from san diego to miami for 4 months. I bought this drone for SO many reasons, but mostly for all of it's automation. The reason I never bought a drone is because I knew I would crash it. Even though it isn't fully going to keep me from that, I am excited to use all of the automated flight paths so I can closely control the camera for my shots. This thing looks perfect. I will also be filming with the DJI Osmo, Sony RX100m4, GoProHero4, Nikon D800 and Nikon D4 ... and I am sure a few iPhone shots will make it in the mix as well. Can't wait to get my droneydrone!

that's normal in the drone business. you can buy the p4 and in less then 4-5months there will be a new and better one released. I mean, the release of the P3 is not more then 10months ago... this drone are coming out faster then smartphones

+Tyler Lyssy dw man i did the same thing but yes the p4 has got longer battery life and a tracking system but the p3 pro basically does everything else . for the p3pro: 1. get numerous batteries( i have got three and thats more than enough(bout 1hr and 10 mins) 2.i dont see any need for the p4 to have a more stable gimbal, the one on my p3pro works so well. and plus give it a year and dji will probs add the tracking thing as a firmware update for the p3 series. im just relived they didnt put a better camera on it, thats the only thing that would have pissed me off

Awesome news. My concerns are wether the automatic obstacle dodging feature is enabled while manually flying it or it is only when it is tracking a subject or automatically returning home. It would be cool if it was an always-on feature to help you out wether you lose controls, the wind is too strong or for whatever reason it's about to crash into something. Like if you're accidentally flying it toward a tree it should automatically brake and hover in front of it until you take control again. With that being said, these are some amazing new advancements for the Phantom. Just hope that the 400-feet software altitude limitation can be removed when using it outside the US.

Please tell me the P3 controllers will work with it. I don't need a pause button or the sport mode toggle. If my other controllers won't work with a P4 I'll wait until they fix the firmware because that's ridiculous.

I have a Phantom 3 Pro and I love it. I would love to upgrade to the Phantom 4 but I dont see the new features worth the $1400 yet. I was hoping that the 4k camera would have a zoom feature before digging into the pocket. Also the follow me feature gets lost too easily just by walking around. How would it react to following a larger object at higher speeds such as a slow moving car or boat...

In my opinion, it's an unfinished/rushed through product. Obstacle avoidance should be 360 degrees. Heck, even the design looks unfinished. Needed more work. Maybe they'll get it right next year...

+sheepcute I think >80% of the obstacles are in the forward direction in practical scenarios. Of course, 360 degrees will be better. The 360 degrees may be a build-in function of Inspire 2 most probably.

I am so stoked to own one of these drones. I also have re-built a few of them..I even re-build the gimbals. I know every screw and part and piece in these drones. Some of the calibration procedures are kind of tricky to get dialed. If you have Apple computers it should be a lot easier to do the calibration's. Super huge fan of these amazing Drones.

Although lacking the "High Speed" and "Pause" button: can I use my Phantom 3 Pro remote with the phantom 4? Reason for asking is: for normal flying I would use the standard P4 remote, but I upgraded my P3P remote with a better antenna enabling it for more range/higher distances/better signal in places with a lot of Wifi's/interference. So I would like to switch between my P3P and P4 remote depending on conditions. Possible?

+Portuman My point is nothing works 100% flawlessly although I don't think it is deal breaker in this case :) They did say later it had some difficulty holding a lock on people in varying light conditions,maybe that was what happened there? I won't be buying one regardless.

I'm curious how the tracking feature works when the drone is out in front of the object being tracked with the object approaching the drone; i.e. does the drone move backward to keep the subject in view? As I type this, I'm realizing that that probably isn't the case, since there aren't camera's in the rear to 'watch out' for obstacles to avoid.

+TomC Same thing happened with the P2 when the 3 was released. I've had my P1 for 2 years not and its dirt cheap these days, the GoPro Hero 3 it uses is the most expensive part. When I bought it all it was the cheapest bit!

I wanna know what happens when the drone is following you in that follow the person mode and 1 or 2 other people walk near you or in opposite direction. Will the drone follow the other person? I saw a video of a person running without the remote with the follow me mode, would you have to run back to the remote and select the come home button?

algorithmically, do they use a neural net for image processing and object recognition/tracking? that tracking though is really fragile. I would've liked to see you put multiple pedestrians in there to see if it can accurately track the target.

Obviously it would work better at higher altitudes because the camera doesn't have to move as much but the person would be smaller therefore harder to track but still pretty good if your walking slowly

Looks intresting! One thing though...I never understood why the "chassi" have to be white on DJI-copters. Mostly they are up in the air, below clouds and what not. Make them dark/black?

+Magnus Persson white is chosen I think because it has the whole clean, pure and expensive look but you're right, It seems logical for the design to be darker in colour, you know the easiest to see from a distance it can be.

Not sure if it's worth the upgrade? you can just use litchi's magic leash and put the phone in a pocket. also that collision avoidance is a great start, but only the front for now. The extended battery life is great though. Also what lightbridge does this have?

The Phantom 6 is already designed and ready for market. Companies slowly release "newer watered down versions" to guarantee future profits. I can guarantee that a DJI Phantom with sensors ALL AROUND that can avoid all obstacles in all directions is designed and planned and simply not released for many generations.

Intel and Nvidia have also famously been known to practice this company model :( So us, the consumers, are really always waiting for new emerging companies or other "rebel" companies to release something so revolutionary that the big giant companies are forced to come out with serious upgrades on their new releases. A good example of this is how BlackMagicTechnologies (makers of the RED cameras) recently launched a full featured NLE (aka. video editing program) for FREE, with their Davinci Resolve 12.5. This will force the giant NLE companies like Adobe, Apple, Sony, and Avid to really step up their game too give the consumers reasons to still choose their paid software. Or they can also roll out their current products for free, but somehow I doubt they will :P Viva la revolución! :D

Hi Norm. Good Job! I would love to see/hear how you compare the Inspire 1 v2 with the Phantom 4. I was just about to pull the trigger on an Inspire when this announcement came out. (Some of the flight avoidance and software upgrades in the P4 would be wonderful in the Inspire and I would hope that they would be incorporated soon)

Love my Phantom 3 Pro. This P4 is not even close to having enough upgrades to make me want to sell all my P3P stuff to buy the P4. I will be waiting until the P5 comes out, March 2017. Cheers, and happy flying!!

Is this limited to the 500m altitude lock? I travel to other countries that don't have altitude limits and I was very disappointed when they implemented it.

I miss my little phantom fc40 now. Most of the time I'd just keep the camera off and do some stunt flying and it always seemed to relax me. I'll probably just build my own next time though.

Could i set a flight plan and fly it on auto pilot?? like lets say i want it to fly really far with minimal interaction and return to home?

As a filmmaker I will stick to the P3P. There is no killer argument for the camera to buy it, it's just little bit better. (Not like the jump from P2V+ to P3P). I would have liked much higher bitrate, so that video get better quality. Also 4K with 50 fps would have been great. So let's wait until next year. I think they want to put something on the market before the Lilly comes out.

It seems to me the subject tracking needs a lot of work. It lost him 2 times and he was in a open field? I thought it would be neat to set it on my dog and let it chase him around a field but looking at this the P4 would not be able to do it

what I would love to see is it tracking one person running, then have someone else run into the shot then run in between the subject and the drone and see how it handles it

Dissapointed with the P4 no hdmi out , no retractable landing gear with 360 deg camera , but + points more power for longer distance flying, bigger battery .I sold my P2V+ and did not buy the P3 so now its a question on whether to buy the P4 or the Yuneec Typhoon Hex .

going for the Yuneec H, which I think has more going for it, has hdmi out also. keeping my p3 as the p4 does not offer enough to upgrade. The Yuneec H is getting my money this time. I hated the Yuneec q500 series, but the H is totally different. so disappointed that the p4 still does not have retracts and a full 360 camera

Some nice feature upgrades, but I'll wait for a quad with 1" or better sensor (below the Inspire price point, with longer flight times and higher portability). These 1/2.3" sensors just aren't cutting it any more.

Nice video. I sold my Phantom 2 now. And I will bay 3 or 4. In my country them sell Phantom 4 from 23 Mars and deliver about 1 April. I like that DJI have dual Imu and Compass on this 4. So maby none "Fly Away" because of broken Compass this time.?. On Phantom 4 its sonar, Dual Compass and Imu. Better battery. With this price Its not long up to Inspire 1. But Phantom 4 look like the best drone on marked now.

I am a happy owner of a Phantom 3 Pro, and I will only upgrade when I see weather resistance added. Obstacle stuff is nice, although I fly mine backwards facing me all the time, so need those cameras on the rear too. 4K/60p is a must, 1080/120p is very handy for slo-mo, as long as the image quality isn't too mushy. DJI, please make a Phantom 5 with 4K/60p and able to fly in the rain/snow/-20C and you have my money!
