We visit HP to go hands-on with their new high-end virtual reality headset, the HP Reverb. This Windows Mixed Reality headset has one of the highest resolution panels we've used for VR, and the clarity is remarkable! Plus, our impressions of Asgard's Wrath and Shadowpoint, two Oculus games we played at GDC.

Yeah he made it clear certain choices are held back by Microsoft (tracking/controllers) and won’t be updated until WMR2 is released by them. I was interested in the higher FOV and lower binocular overlap. The sweet spot discussion was good, but I wanted to hear more about those features.

“On a 1070, it gets downscaled and uprezzed.” Is there a scaler in the HMD, or is this just regular subsampling? Since DP 1.4 is a requirement for 90Hz, I’d have assumed there’s no scaler onboard, but if you have a direct line to ask HP, I’d be very curious, thanks!

I believe there's a way to use vive lighthouses and controllers with a wmr headset. I've seen a RU-vidr do it. I have a Lenovo and use it regularly to play games. Tracking is rarely an issue. It may be in fast shooters which I don't really play so I can't comment on. It would be nice to see wmr start using more camera's though.

Norm, Jeremy, you mention that tracking isn’t as good as the Vive or Rift but your video showed you in a room with blank white and teal walls. They have a great product on their hands with screens that are going to be a privilege to use till the end of 2019. Perhaps later in the year the Cosmos may enter with a 4k screen but with it's 4 camera tracking I'd guess a $799. At only 2.9" diameter per eye we are talking about some high ppi here. Damn, I want to add it to my collection. Windows tracking was a no brainer for cost cutting I guess, it's not that great but otherwise it would a $900+ HMD. Of course, tested guys always have great questions.

"If you move the controllers outside of the field of view you lose all tracking immediately" I understand why people think that given the camera setup, but the accelerometers in the controllers do a pretty good job of tracking when they're outside the camera's FOV. With first-hand experience in WMR with VRchat, onward, Superhot and Beatsaber, I can say WMR has never struggled with reaching outside of my FOV. Maybe it's a Steam VR thing because it has definitely gotten better with updates.
@MrAntimationStudios
@MrAntimationStudios 5 лет назад
@@lostecho4394 Up until a few months ago that was my experience. But recently I've been able to maintain 6DOF outside of my FOV almost indefinitely, however after 10 seconds the drift does become noticeable. It may be the case that some mod I have installed is causing this behavior.
@Sevendogtags
@Sevendogtags 5 лет назад
I have WMR as well and it is definitely does not last 10 seconds outside camera's view. It can predict your trajectory for 1-2 seconds outside of camera's view and then after that it turns into a 3DOF controller until it's back in view. Of course this is enough for any game that requires you grab a weapon/arrow etc.. from your back. And the improvements have nothing to do with SteamVR. It's the "Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR" app that has improved a lot and Windows updates.

Is there a way to increase/improve the accuracy and/or reliability of inside out tracking? I’m thinking things like: - does the room need to be well lit or does it work on a different spectrum? - does printing qr-code-like images or something well defined and taping them to walls, etc help the tracking accuracy? If I’m on a racing simulator I would not want the cameras to follow the rotation of the steering wheel and make my POV rotate like crazy. If POV also drifts over time, it would also be a problem... So... How can I modify my environment to help the tracking algorithm? Thanks
@Sergioosh
@Sergioosh 5 лет назад
I've had the Explorer, original Odyssey and now the Odyssey+. Headset tracking is spot on. Many people approach WMR with prejudice thinking inside out tracking simply can't be as good as external tracking. They're right, but only when it comes to controllers. Then again only due to blind spots, not the accuracy. - your room just needs to be lit, nothing else. It won't work in darkness. - I have a plain, smooth, white wall facing away from my desk. If I look at it in HMD it has not misbehaved so far. Not even once. However, I've seen in one of the WMR review videos on YT, that if you have a greenscreen setup, you will need to put some marks on the green areas if the HMD's cameras are facing the greenscreen exclusively. He got around it by putting couple of black tape strips on the walls. One thing to watch out for is reflective surfaces like mirrors and glass (mainly big windows and such). However, this is something to look out for on any VR platform. If you're mainly using VR for racing sims, then WMR is a good choice for you. IMO the only downside of WMR is the controller blind spots, and those will not apply to you.

*Die by the Sword* yes! I feel like hardly anyone has heard of that or remembers that, but ever since VR was budding out I made mention of it several times. Developers became lazy and focused more and more on art and sound rather than cool gameplay mechanics like Die by the Sword. At least VR is forcing it in some ways. There's still other games that have mechanics that have gone completely abandoned though (ex. Westwood's _Nox_)

One of the unmentioned perks. Is the Bluetooth controller now being embedded in the device. Unlike first gen WMR devices (samsung odyssey+ has integrated BT). While it may seem like a trivial aspect. It in fact does make for a much more consistent experience with the controllers. The bluetooth communication between the game controllers head unit is critical to maintaining proper positioning and behavior of the controllers in-game. Having personally had to work with multiple bluetooth devices (some have horrible signal performance) Even good ones can have a difficult time maintaining consistent communication 100% of the time. nearby RF interference from other electronics. Can he a highly deleterious effect on BT. now that the bluetooth device is going to always be no more then 2 to 3 feet from it. Will significantly help the performance of this controller type. That said more camera's would be a most welcome addition to the tech. And all that really stands in the way of inside out tracking being the clear adopter standard in the future of VR.

This is why I'm excited about the hp reverb and why I'm so disappointed and pissed off at oculus/Facebook. My issue is that many games are very much hindered or unplayable with the rift. Pretty much any sim or any first person shooter gets extremely blurry with distance. Sims are all terrible unless they are made cartoony which helps but then not much of a sim. Even the odyssey plus isnt enough to have a crisp image for simulations and it's by far surpasses anything oculus has. And honestly with how bad the God rays are on the rift I really dont like using it. I havent sold it yet because I'm just a bit too tied up to deal with having to.
@fiberop635
@fiberop635 5 лет назад
@@lostecho4394 I dont have anything wrong it's just i have used better displays and if you once again play any sim will notice how bad it really is. When you cant read gauges because the resolution is so low that it's more of a reference point vs a actual guage that's bad. Like I said the odyssey plus is way ahead but even still it's not there I'm hoping the reverb will be closer. On normal displays I normally play on a 4k panel or a 3440x1440 100hz so maybe I'm just useto better clarity. I hineslty think the rift is subpar and everyone that I have shown it too says the same thing its blurry (they dont know what resolution is) and then I give them the odyssey or the odyssey plus and they notice a huge difference but also still note that it's still not like a monitor. If you are flying a war bird and have to lean in to check manifold pressure or oil ect then you know the headset isnt really good enough. On the other side is if you cant spot planes due to the resolution being so muddy then once again. Afterwards you put on a better display and its day and night then well the evidence is clear....

@@NarwhalGamingTV this is true, but in the case of either headset you need an epic rig to run these. My Vega FE cannot cope. Tested suggested that 1080TI does fine with the INdex in their hand on, but they seem to have played mostly low geometry games. So time will tell.

How much is this and the index in the uk?

Hmm interesting... My ipd is kinda small but if that works that would be nice... The tracking is still a deal breaker for me though. They really need to get it to track a little further behind the body. At least upto where the controller is directly above the head or above the shoulder. Many games specifically require players to reach up over the shoulder to grab stuff, so...

Wow! Imagine that a headset like this had access to the Oculus SDK with ASW! If that was the case you could probably get away with a 1070. I am torn on getting this.

My ideal oculus rift upgrade would be reverbs resolution, oled rgb panel, psvr type lenses (no god rays) Rift S style headband cameras and controlers or original rift controllers with sensors, original rift headphones, volume and manual ipd adjustment on the headset. And maybe make the headband replacable with the overhead strap type for people who prefer it.

I want that screen, in a headset with a better tracking system and better controllers.

Yep, spot on. The tracking is not good enough to compete with the other devices. Microsoft should not abandon the VR market yet. They made it to 10% and more on Steam which is not bad. They should refine their products with more cameras etc. For the Rift S halo, I heard you can actually smush it onto your face pretty good, so it wont wobble as much.
