Hands Up! This is a SHAKEDOWN! (Sail) | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 122

Anyone else’s to-do list only ever seem to get longer no matter how many tasks you check off? We’ve got the answer to that: Toss that list overboard and hoist the sails 🤪
The weather is gorgeous, we’ve got swimsuits on in late September, and days like these are what this is all about. We take the trimaran out for a few spins to see what she can do, and even though the wind is finicky and light, we still fly!
Course rarely will you find us only “just” having fun. We needed to take the boat out to give her a shakedown, to make sure our to-do list has everything on it that really needs doing. So naturally we add a few more things… But for real, this time it’s about the sailing.
Hope you enjoy!

Sweet, what a cool boat, 9 knots in a light breeze with flat water is awesome sailing! Pretty wild to think you could do a couple hundred miles in a light day! So nice to see the family enjoying a good day together. Been 20 years since I kayaked in Sturgeon bay on Lake Mich, the lake is such an amazing place! Looking forward to seeing your vessel dialed in and singing along.

use more than you think you should. This makes a huge, huge difference. Also jumping the halyard from the net and letting the mast rotator off a bit so it can rotate as you rase helps.

Glad to see y’all getting out on the water:) Maybe try using the spinnaker or skreecher halyard as a provisional topping lift?? If I don’t have the boom angle relative to the mast perfect when raising (or lowering) main there is lots of extra friction and the bolt rope wants to pull out of track or jam up.

Re Daggerboard wobble. I am currently constructing a Farrier trimaran, (F-39) and in my plans there is shown a hardwood insert glassed in at the bottom of the daggerboard case, with a cut out to match the daggerboard foil profile. Could probably be made 2 halves if needed Have not got plans with me but I think the insert hardwood piece was in the the region of 25-30mm thick.

Great sail. Not sure what to think about that trunk space with the dagger board. maybe a block spacers installed on both sides of the trunk to tighten the gap up... maybe. Might run a piece of rag up the track system with the halyard with a messenger line to retrieve it. No doubt there is some gunk in that track. I did it to my mast on my Hobie cats and Nacra cat and it made a huge difference.

1:01 I love these milk bottle ropes too! Also, did you know that milk is chock full of essential vitamins and minerals your body needs for a tough day out on the water. Empty milk bottles can also be used as PFD's for children & waifish adults. A recent study by KPMJ showed that milk bottles could be recycled into hemp, which could then be used to create milk bottles made from hemp. Disclaimer: Not an ad. I'm just a humble dairy farmer from Rudolph, WI who sells milk-in-bottles...

Great video. Seems like a wooden pole or a 2*4 with a hook on the could be used as temporary support the boom until you get a permanent topping lift installed. Our Stuart Mariner had a really baggy main so we rarely sailed in higher winds, spent a lot time watching for wind puffs.

I imagine that you have solved your daggerboard trunk problem by now, but I think some Delrin pads/shims could be installed in the trunk to take up the slop. What do the plans call for? They might show some fairing in the trunk that's covered with carpet. That's the way the daggerboard rudder cases are designed on our F32. I think somebody commented on your last video -- the pads on the beams are worn or gone, creating the clunk in the forward port beam. So good to see the boat sailing under it's own power. Congrats!!!

Great to see you out sailing. I feel that you may have unleashed a monster with Lauren and her developing "need for speed". I've seen that look before in my own wife. It leads to a very exhilarating (and expensive) ride. There will always be "performance" improvements you will have to do now. Good to see you have come to the multihull side and you can see what sailing you can do without dragging a lead mine everywhere with you.

..... curious to see the outcome on the dagger board .... is the dagger board spec optimum and a sleeve goes in the hole or does the dagger board get bigger ...... curious if a sheave is frozen making the raising of the main so strenuous ..... that was a good shake-down sail ..... gotta say the best part was all the smiles from the family unit ... rock on .... thx for the share .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans .....

To me it looks like the dagger board could benefit from some UHMW shims to take up that space between the top of the board and the case and keep it from flopping around.
@robertgeorge9909

Dagger board was not made to Ian's plans. The section in the trunk when down should be rectangular like the trunk.
@SailingTipsCa
@SailingTipsCa Год назад
@@robertgeorge9909 Yes it most certainly should be rectangular like the trunk. Also the exit in the hull should be more board shaped at the very bottom to accommodate the fin but prevent the rectangular top of the board from falling out. You shouldn't be able to remove the board from the bottom like in the video.

@Tomm9y
@Tomm9y Год назад
Good to see you all smiling. Such speeds in light airs are brilliant, keeping some shape to the main in light winds will help too. I would check if the daggerboard is the the full design spec, it appeared to be shallow. I think some boards have delrin strips to slide on and to restrict fore and aft movement. I would replace the sheave on the main halyard and fit a topping lift at the same time, with a fat head on the main the topping lft can be looped forward when sailing, a bungee part way out to the shrouds would prevent any clanging on the mast. It's probably worth investing in a good single line slab reefing system operable from the cockpit, you need to be able to easily reduce sail quickly singlehanded.
@bake162
@bake162 Год назад

Oops. Also of note was that I ran the centerboard pin through the disks. I did this since I have no confidence in any glue working long term for sticking nylon disks to gel coat. I checked the other day and the glue on one is unstuck. Does not matter since nylon disk is now a big washer allowing centerboard to swing freely.
