Hang glider review: the Icaro Piuma

Hi ! Yes and no! Not even on the Piuma they are "easy" to put on... Yes I know the different techniks. It is an ugly 'pain in the ass' hang glider design feature to have semi- tension on the wands. And it wrinkles the sail at the tips when packed. But it seems to be the trend over "straight tips ""ala Aeros Combat, Wills Wing Falcon". But, as usual, when you get used to akward, it becomes normal and okay ;) .

thank for your advice! I stuck to the manual building it up. I kept my struggles with the tip wands in the video because it might be recognizable for other first-timers, the proper way is demonstrated at the end.

About control bar: Correct assembling is when you can read "Icaro" on top.

I have a Icaro RX2, i think its very similar to the new Piuma. But the RX2 is not heavytailed.

I owned a Perfex for a few years and even though the ground handling was nice because of the "natural" position of the uprights, on windy days that glider just wanted to pick up wind easily, making it difficult to ground handle

For the sail it's either Dacron or Technora (both materials come from sail boat sails). The tubes are aluminum alloys (7075). But PLEASE do not try to build your own glider! Sign up for a hang-gliding course and get your license. Then ask your instructor to get you a used modern single-surface glider to start. This way you have a much higher chance of living a long life ;)

Johannes Hogebrink yes but it was so painful to watch in real time I had to comment the second I saw it .. :) you must be very new to the sport..? Because very few pilots these days have not dealt with curve tips.. they’re annoying 😂 welcome to hang gliding!

I've been in the sport since 1973 and love my RX2 18m, predecessor to the Piuma. It combines the light weight and simplicity of the 70's with superior aerodynamics and mechanics of the current generation. There's a growing segment of the sport that enjoys flying modern floaters. Flies like a high EN-B paraglider but it's a hang glider.

Vicarious Icarus but what is the main advantage of flying a hang glider over a high B paraglider? Better glide?

@@Vl7248 both have advantages over the other so it comes down to the individual pilot and his or her preferences and circumstances. I fly purely for recreation and modern old school gliders put a bigger smile on my face than flying competition grear does. Over 2500hrs on HG and 15 minutes on PG so far. That will change in time.

Vicarious Icarus I only ask as I’ve flown hg for 20++ years as well. My first free flight was on a PG tandem in Europe and somehow got sucked into hging... don’t regret it. my opinion now is that hg became too obsessed with performance over simplicity. To your point the high end single surface is compelling for aging hg pilots. Maybe it even pulls in some pg pilots that want a wing for stronger days.. but for avg conditions a pg seems to offer a single surface hg in a hikeable backpack. Hard to compete with that form factor. I would love to see the main hg manufactures advance the sport by competing to make a single surface hg under 35lbs that can fold to 6ft That would be super compelling

The Piuma is a beutiful machine and I prob will buy one. But ultimately if hg is to expand to a new demographic and grow it needs to push the envelope of convenience. The design hasn’t really changed in 40years. ESP for the new generation that doesn’t want to buy a 4x4 truck to haul a hg
