Im only half way through the episode, but had to take a break to congratulate you on the episode and this whole series. I have not found anything like this elsewhere. You are building a community in New York but also online. I was at the Aipad show on friday, and there were fantastic photos (too expensive for me), but i would rather support contemporary street photographers like you and your guests. Would live to see a couple of episodes of darkroom process both b&w and color. Thanks, John

I think NY street photography can be great and each different artist lends their own perspective but I think it's also important to document where you are and not feel like you need to be in a certain place to be a street photographer.

I love all these videos, it really shows the range of different street photographers and there's really nothing that stops people to go out and just shoot. I do wonder though, how does each of them support themselves financially, how many of them can turn their photos into profit, cuz films are really expensive these days, and it doesn't seems to me that easy to make a living by street photography.

So I’ve just come across your channel and I love this series. But I’ve noticed something kind of cool. This woman at 5:49 is the same lady from the walkie talkie you did with Tommy Wisecup. I remember her because Tommy was in the middle of changing rolls when he noticed her, had to pull his second camera out to get a picture of her. But I’m dubbing her the “polka dot hat lady”. Unless she’s a well known like the green lady.

Hey Pauli, I really enjoy your Walkie Talkies, the way you talk to the photographer, the editing etc. But after 22 episodes it gets tiring watching people taking photos, mostly with all the same setup. Not that I mind them using a Leica (M6) but also the same focal length. I'm just a stranger from the internet so who am I to judge, I don't know how much is behind these videos, the organization to meet up with the photographer etc. It would be really refreshing to see a Walkie Talkie with someone who uses e.g. a TLR, or idk- a super wideangle lense. The video where you interviewed Jerry Pena is a really good video, very interesting and something new, something many people haven't seen before. Another photographer with a 28mm and most likely a Leica gets tiring. But again, who am I to judge. Take this as constructive criticism, the videos are great but I'd love to see more unique photographers :) Greetings from Germany!

Hi -- thank you for the comment and watching. Although the set ups are similar, to me, the philosophies, stories, and approaches vary. Again, I never ask or know what cameras people are going to be shooting until I hit record. It's always about the community I'm in and the photography, not the camera/lens. I'm not a gear channel, the conversations rarely ever talk about gear/specs - I'd recommend checking out channels that like to experiment and talk about different cameras because that's not what we do here.

Paul, I love learning from you and your friends, but sometimes I respectfully disagree. Not with any one photog, but more so with the "apparent" current trend of street photography. The quality of photos I see are great (shout out to leica again and to each shooters developing process), yet there seems to be more emphasis on collecting shots than creating specific narratives and/or connection with subjects. Obviously, a high quantity of shooting is paramount in creating high quality work. I do like the hunting/fishing question, but this a gathering (taking) process rather a narrative/storyline (creating) one. Granted, Capa's advice rings in my ears all the time ("If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough..."), but maybe he meant connectivity as well proximity to the observed. Is it possible the reason "nothing's happening out here today" is due to a singular focus on the hunt? Is it possible the great works of both the past and present have elements of both? I hope my words don't offend. I self evaluate constantly and strive to create and recreate my work all the time. I look forward to more lessons from you and your colleagues. All the best, Pete Hopkins
@PaulieB
@PaulieB Год назад
Everyone’s different. Me personally, at this moment, i just like taking pictures & don’t try to put too much pressure on “creating a narrative “. That said, some people live for that & that’s cool too.
