Hanging Roof Trusses on Pole Barn

We are hanging roof trusses on our pole barn. We are still recovering from our mistake on our pole barn. We ordered or trusses too long for the way we set our post. They were too long. By adding a header to the outside of the post, we made a resting place for the trusses at the exact needed measurements. This will be just as strong in the long run, and it will save us the extra cost of buying new trusses. There is no telling when we could get new trusses. The current setup in this video would be strong enough, but I will be adding additional support to the header. That will be in a future video. For now, we need to get these roof trusses of the ground.

It was a bad situation that worked out. We ordered the trusses and they came in right as covid hit. Everything come to a screeching halt. It was almost a year afterwards that we started building the pole barn.

Looking good! Your solution will work supporting the trusses. Rule of thumb is always have a post under a beam, never count on fasteners. If you get enough weight on it the fasteners will act as a splitting wedge. A friend was building a deck and he was going to bolt everything. I laid a 1/2 bolt across two cinder blocks and took a 4x4 and drove it down on the bolt, it split like firewood. My friend was surprised to say the least. The important thing to remember is keep your chin up and move forward. There is almost always a work around!

You are 100% correct, and it has weighed on my mind a great deal. I mounted the lean-to trusses to the bottom of one side hoping to add support.

Truss should be placed onto center of post so the combined roof weight is transferred directly to the footings and not relaying on fasters to carry the load.

I welded heavy angle iron just below the gable. That mad it impossible for the trusses to settle in the middle. Then I welded another cross piece about a ft lower than that and it has 2 board on it just in case you wanted to close the gable in.

Needs double 2x12s for headers, 6x6s need notched so the roof weight is pushing down on the poles.

Starting to look like a building Tony👍. I guess once everything in the truss load paths is as robust as having them sit on the pole caps you'll be good. Maybe some commercial joist hangers could be adapted, or turn the header into a flitch beam. Sorry for unsolicited opinion but I thought it might be of interest.
@TonysTractorAdventure
@TonysTractorAdventure 2 года назад
We are thinking on the same line. I have no problem with constructive criticism. I am thinking of welding a cross brace on the trusses to help with spread pressure. What are your thoughts on that?
@Bodhranarama
@Bodhranarama 2 года назад
@@TonysTractorAdventure a welded cross brace would help, the lower the better, but if you don't get snow it could probably be quite high up so as to not rob you of too much height. It would also be a great place to mount lights. You could also add small triangular plates at the apexes to relieve the strain on the lower (in tension) welds. Disclaimer, I'm not an engineer but I've been responsible for the upkeep of a suite of farm buildings for 25y.

Hi Tony, you're probably way ahead of me on this but I would throw a come along across the truss and pull it in before adding the brace, so that it settles back into the correct position.
