We had a cheap, no-name racing head laying around and we had a 30C Heritage handle that didn't meet our standards just sitting there waiting to be firewood so we decided to have some fun with them.
In this video, Brandon walks you through a down and dirty hang in his basement shop.
When he needs to get an axe in working order this is the process he goes through.
There's nothing fancy about it but there are quite a few tips and tricks he shows you along the way.
If you don't have access to some fancy shop with every vice, clamp, and power tool you could ever ask for this video is for you.
The handle in this video can be found here (when in stock):

Camp wax can be found here:

Vice guard can be found here:

If you need wedges look no further...

It's comforting to see that I'm not the only one with a cluttered workshop! Getting the job done is the goal. Cleaning? One of these days... You did a fine job explaining the basics of hanging an axe. Beginners are often intimidated and tend to overthink things. You can be way too critical of yourself, but if you keep the mindset that the axe was broken when I started... Besides, you get better at it the more you do it. It definitely can develop into an art form if you stay with it. I've found myself looking for old axe heads at auctions, antique shops, and yard sales. You can never have too many axes, right? And the satisfaction you feel after your first successful axe build is awesome. It's a hobby in itself. Thanks for sharing! Keep up the good work!

That's a great way to think about it, I never thought of framing it as "the axe was already unuseable when I picked it up." You are also right that this hobby is always a work in progress but that's what makes it fun!

Man! Every dealing I have with these guys is "real life" and so helpful because of it. No matter how much thought I give to an articulating clamp, I will always still find a job where the position is awkward. Working through the "stuck" head before hanging was more helpful than you know.

Most realistic, how it actually goes video I've seen on hanging a head. Down to the stuff falling off the bench lol. I keep those little clear ice cream containers too, for blo & stain mixes.

Have you ever used a pencil to add some graphite to the head while fitting to see where the contact is? I find it very helpful to “see” where the handle needs a little more thinning.

Make a drift out of a section of an old handle to bang the handle off of the head 👍

24:44 By all means get the job done. But never forget to make sh!t better for next time. It's your own workshop and no one else will probably see it - yes. But that's a reason *for* fixing it, not against it. Nothing feels better than improving yourself and the things around you! 💪🔥 Especially when it allows you to do a faster and better job with les stress! 🙏 Take care. 😘✌

This is not our shop. It’s a buddies shop that we borrowed for this video. I wasn’t about to tell him how he needs to build out his space

@@WhiskeyRiverTradingCo Ofc not in that case. Totally looked like yours btw, so kuddos, but was speaking in general anyway. It was a good video and I love that you kept the editing to a minimum. Sharing the realistic part of fixing stuff is always awesome to me! Hope more people appreciate it too. You did a bang up job and gave me some ideas, so thank you! 🙏👍

I've had wedges come loose. What do you think about adding some wood glue to your wedge?
